It's really quite simple for me. With linux, I am an operator; I am in control of my machine, and I tell it what to do. With Windows, I am denigrated to the level of "User"... on par with the nameless, faceless, bleating masses that eagerly shovel mass-produced, scientifically marketed drivel into their maws because the marketing machines have told them that nine out of ten automatons within their demographic niche loved it.
oooh. this ended up being more rant-like than I expected.
With linux, I can figure out why certain things happen. I can learn how things work, and use that knowledge to predict future behavior. With Windows, I can't do so 100%. I am never certain if unexpected behavior is caused by a lack of understanding on my part, or a bug on windows' part. With the closed-source model, I am too dependent upon one source of information.
But ultimately, it comes down to a question of quality. Windows, with all it's flashy promises of homogenizing my "Computer Experience" is not engineered to the same degree of quality as linux.
All joking aside, I am not held accountable to anyone in regards to my internet browsing... Just as I am not held accountable in regards to the books I read, or the thoughts I think. There really is no difference between the books that I read, the internet sites that I read/visit, or the thoughts I think. These I refuse to submit to a "peer review process" they are mine, and mine alone.
WHY THE HELL WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO DO THAT!?!?!?!!!???!?! Shit... next thing you know these puritanical freaks are going to start going after the beer in my fridge, and the smokes on my desk. What's next... the " improper " thoughts in my head?
I don't know how it is in other companies, but I do know that the terms of my employment state implicitly that I am not authorized to enter into any agreements that are/may be legally binding for my company. Now, I wonder how this would translate to "accepting" the BSA's terms of extortion by clicking "I agree" on an EULA?
"Enthusiasm was stoked by an Andersen Consulting study done for the Association of American Publishers. It concluded that by 2005, 10 percent of book sales, or $2.3 billion a year, would be electronic."
--I always knew that Andersen was full of shit...
Leave it up to Andersen to fabricate a $5,000,000.00 solution to a $.05 problem!
...I've been waiting for a tablet PC coupled w/wireless ethernet card! Imagine, being able to order up a DVD & a pint of Ben & Jerry's from kozmo, without even getting out of bed!
I heard something a couple of years ago about Lucas never releasing anything on DVD format because he had a big chip on his shoulder 'cause Laser Disc never took off. I can't guarentee the validity of this statement beyond the shadow of a doubt. However... let's look at this logically... In today's market, it makes more sense right now to put an elevator in an outhouse than not to release a HUGE hollywood blockbuster on DVD. All the bs about Lucas not wanting to release TPM on DVD unless it was an "amazing product" is just bs if he is releasing it on VHS. DVD fans aren't asking for the Mona Lisa of all DVDs... we just want it to be released in a decent format.
Save regular backups on secure (preferably off-site) media, and get a good renters/home owner's insurance policy. Once its gone, its gone.
