Sure you will find a lot of bandwidth that is really cheap. However, those pipes may be between Gunnison, CO and Boulder. Meanwhile the pipes moving from big metro area to big metro area are filling up/full while pushing up prices.

  4. Veracity of Evidence on Using Google Maps to Get Out of a Traffic Ticket · · Score: 4, Interesting

Presumably before the defendent was allowed to do anything with that laptop the judge must have admitted it as evidence.

If an item is admitted as evidence, the court has to believe that it is accurate. It is assumed that it is because it is approved by the judge (of truth).

The only way the officer could argue that Google Maps is crap enough to disprove the defendent's case is to suggest that it not be included as evidence.

Does a police officer that responds to traffic accidents know anything about how to do that?

  5. Society's POV on Using Google Maps to Get Out of a Traffic Ticket · · Score: 1

Sounds like everything worked out perfectly for both you and society. Society didn't have to pay the officer to show up while he could be saving the world from criminals. The court's time was not wasted with a case that has no merit.

Sure this sucks for your jobs? And why is it that it sucks?

You have to manipulate machines to accomodate human's daytime-loving nature. In fact, you should love situations like this: the only reason that you have a job is to make machines accomodate human psychology.

So for the slashdot folks: using computers outside; reading about computers outside; watching DVDs outside..etc.

  13. Obsolete? on Too Old To Code? · · Score: 1
How exactly do you become obsolete from coding? As long as you keep yourself competant and you enjoy what you're doing, keep on doing it.

Luckily, by the time you get 'burned out,' you'll probably become a project manager or some position in management, or possibly just become a yuppy in marketing (yes, cringe).

Anyway, there's always something else to do even if you do become 'obsolete.' Bottom line, just keep current and make sure you have plenty of options opened. Yes, I know it's scary thinking about not jumping up every morning not wanting to code, but just don't worry about it until the time comes.
