  1. LIMP? on Review of the Audiotron Stereo MP3 Component · · Score: 2

I'm not up to speed on the plausibility of such a device, so I'll put it out to the /. brain trust.

Would it be possible to create a micro-Linux distribution that did nothing more than process .mp3 or .ogg streams for playing through your stereo similarly to this hardware product?

Technology is getting to the point that the old 486's laying around the house gathering dust are now being joined by old lower-end Pentium-class systems. Surely a Linux microkernel system compiled with your necessary soundcard and NIC drivers, along with the vorbis decoder would be small enough to fit on a floppy?

Maybe call it the LInux Music Project?

The whole "Tom's article on the heat sink falling off" bullshit is silly. If the water pump in your car fails and you keep running it then your motor will burn up. Luckily we have temperatore gauges on most autos to let us know when our car is overheating.

AMD CPU's, for the most part, kick mule all over Intel's offerings at the same rated speed. If you follow normal precautions with your CPU (i.e. fasten the heatsink properly) the likelihood of the heatsink "falling off" is next to nil.

They can easily work around this by simply putting a small notification somewhere on the jewel case that says that it will not play on a computer CD-ROM drive, as they have done in Germany.

The vast majority of sheep who just listen on standard CD players will not care about this, as it does not bother them and the labels know this. Those of us in the minority (and we ARE a minority) who want to copy our CD's so as to store the originals and submit the copies to the hazards of life are going to get screwed. And this is why we need to do something about it.

  7. And then they came for the N*SYNC listeners... on NSync Copy Protected CD · · Score: 4, Insightful

Damnit, what is it going to take for the minions of Slashbots to quit cracking the comments about the copy protected artists not being worth copying? I was getting ready to Moderate this damned thread but I kept finding myself modding posts down so I gave up.

I do not care whether the copy protection is on an artist I like or one that I dislike. The point is that this travesty is creeping into the mainstream music industry, and if nothing is done the cost of adding this protection to future artists you might care about will be so insignificant that it won't be an issue whether they do it or not.

So get a damned clue people. This shit needs to be acted on now, either through letters to the labels involved or through active cracking of the protection schemes. The audio passthrough cables don't count here, as we need something that is so painfully easy to use (recording one long-ass wav file then editing each song out is normally fine for most studio works but try doing that on a live album with no breaks. I've done it and it sucks) that it's almost seamless in its operation.

Don't get complacent about this shit, because by the time they copy protect YOUR favorite artist it might be too late to stop them.

Yeah, this guy is a real hero to the recording artists out there. Check this statement out:

"Yes, I have. I've used Napster, and both my kids have used Napster."

What this guy is saying is that while he was downloading Jim Nabor's songs during his permanent unemployment from the DJ business he realized that those recording industry executives probably didn't like this whole file sharing thing.

Being that most of these execs are still convinced that there is a really small needle that is used to play compact discs he realized that there is probably a lot of money in creating a "copy protection scheme" for audio CD's using a technology that uses a lot of technojargon with just a hint of smoke and mirrors .

By the time this copy protection gets bypassed by someone in his youngest childs daycare class he would have already pocketed hundreds of millions of dollars and can then work on the latest release of his product which uses higher quality mirrors and a different color smoke.

Bravo to him for moving from turntable flunky to recording company fleecer.

Oh, and a correction. Those aren't speedbumps, those are the folks that are buying CD's and trying to use them in a legal fashion.
