"1. What are the uses of cryptography as a 'Human Rights Tool'?"

If Nostradamus had PGP way back when he would have never had to write his predictions in his own made-up language (and even then in cryptic generalities) and we wouldn't have to deal with all this spam mail about him predicting S11's events.

Wow, didn't Sony do this last year? Right before Christmas they delayed the release and then came up with drastically fewer boxes than they expected, thereby putting the market into a buying frenzy. Anything with the PS2 logo quickly sold out, and Sony raked in the money.

Get out and start standing in lines now, cuz those units that you grab at the local Best Buy will be gold on eBay. And if you keep one for yourself I'd like the box from ya so I can sell it to some rube on eBay for $1500.

They only take a few seconds to burn out if you have no cooling whatsoever. Therefore if your fan dies and your heatsink is still on it will get hot but your probe will notice this and therefore you will be able to shut down in time.

However, if your heatsink falls off, then you are screwed. But this is the way to learn.

There are freeware programs available for Windows (probably Linux as well) that monitor the temperatures reported by your motherboard. Some like Motherboard Monitor will actually shut down your computer if one of your sensors report a temperature greater than a threshhold that you can set.

I'd link to them, but I believe that linking from Slashdot to websites hosting small free projects like this is cruel and inhumane. Go do a search and download it from one of the mirrors.

This is more of a problem than this post's humor highlights. I live in Portland Oregon and there are several nests of endangered peregrine falcons downtown. Environmentalists would claim that these turbines could potentially kill these few remaining nesting birds.

Proposed wind-powered generator farms in the Columbia Gorge (a lot of wind, world class sailboarding) have been axed after fears of endangered birds getting whacked by the big blades.

Nice idea, but it won't happen.

Nostradamus wrote his "prophecies" in a language that only he knew in fear of death. Scholars have been trying to translate his ramblings for hundreds of years and every once in awhile they try and take their "translations" and compare them to modern events. Heck, most studies of his work said that he had no further predictions after 2000/05/05 which was widely viewed to be his prediction of the end of the world. Guess what? We're still here.
