I can see where your wife would be upset there. When dealing with kids you need to be very specific. You should have specified that he needed approval from his Mother, not just to ask her about it. Kids can be super literal and I know as a child I would have taken that to mean that I could eat the candy regardless of her answer so long as I asked first.
That said, I feel ya on the spouse that doesn't do very well at picking up after themselves and hibernates like a bear.
S/he was just pointing out that taxes do not prevent you from investing money back into the business because taxes are only paid on profits. Money invested back into the company is considered a business expense and so tax deductible, or in other words, not taxed. And just because the example given reduced the profit to zero doesn't mean that would be optimal or livable. You'd probably want to draw just enough of a salary to live on while keeping your tax burden low, heck you could probably keep yourself in that 47% that doesn't end up owing any Federal income taxes.
That's probably true but "millionaires" covers people like my Father who did not make crazy amounts of money but through wise saving and investing now own assets worth more than a million. There are a lot of older middleclass folks that fit the title of Millionaire. Being a Billionaire is a good bit more difficult but most of those people started out as millionaires, instead of scrimping and saving their way to it. There is a huge difference between the two. And it's been cited to death that the healthy majority of the 1% were born into that class, even if they weren't given their fortune by their parents they had enormous advantages because of the privileges of their class. While it is still true that someone could boot strap themselves from birth into abject poverty up to immense wealth, the odds are so ridiculously stacked against it as to make buying lottery tickets a better investment. It takes money to make money isn't based in fantasy.
PS. I've seen some people who incorrectly believed they were in the 1% because they were worth more than $1 million. While I believe the delineating factor is actually something like having an annual income around that size, not just total assets owned.
Unsocketed stuff is worth keeping if a single socket is all you need in it to make it worth while. In the second Act one of the NPC's can add a socket to any item if you also give him two gems of equal or higher level. I've got a gem from relatively early on that I found with +129 hp or something like that. Every time I find a new helmet that is better than my existing helm otherwise, I unsocket the gem, socket the new helm and add my gem. The funny thing for me is that I must suck at the game. I started an embermage on Vetran and didn't really like the way it was playing, so I switched to a Berzerker on the same difficulty and have been loving it. But I think I'm only in the third act or maybe the end of the second, and I've probably got 40 or 50 hours into it.
PS - Lastnight just before I shut down for the night I found a Badgermask. I had never heard of it before but it is the bee's knees and the flavor text is just the icing on the cake.
I love that only 5% of respondents said they regularly rolled stop signs. People, and I mean probably 50% or so of the population always roll stop signs if they don't have to wait on another driver. I catch myself doing it every once in awhile and my wife does it constantly. Most people probably do slow down enough to be safe and think that they've stopped. But very few of us actually come to a complete stop.
Fallout 3 while not being a complete sandbox does allow you to go pretty much anywhere at any point in time with a variety of quests and events happening all over the map that are completely independant of the main story. The world was also a bit more dynamic than Borderlands. It had day and night cycles and NPC's for whom that mattered. You could decide to blow up the starter town or disarm the bomb to save it. You could protect the interests of a bunch of racists in a high rise or betray them and let in a host of ghouls to kill and permanently replace them.
Borderlands is much more on rails. While you can go back to old areas to look for gear new area's generally don't open up until the story leads you there by the hand. Also side quests were kept to a minimum and there was usually only one course of progression through them. The world was also largely static, in that nothing you did seemed to matter or change anything in the long run.
I bought ME 1 on a Steam sale and really just couldn't get into it. The game was just painful to try and play because the controls and such were just horrendous. I did however really like all the in game lore, I'm pretty sure I spent more time reading all of the stuff I had access to than actually fighting. I don't think I put more than three hours into it all told though.
Borderlands didn't have nearly as interesting or indepth of a story and universe but it was hilarious. And the game play was excellent. The weapon variety and balance was a bit lacking. I only bought the first expansion and the entire time I was playing you only needed two weapons, a high fire damage SMG and a high corrosive damage weapon of any kind. Alternatively you could play and spec as a pure berserker and just run around punching stuff in the face 95% of the time.
I can see how a catfish farm wouldn't necessarily be using water efficiently, simply because those ponds are great for evaporation. And you said they were draining them and just dumping the water? That is pretty wasteful.
I have been reading up on aquaponics as a means of both gardening and raising fish. Basically you have a tank where you raise fish, they turn their food into fertilizer and deposit it in the water. The water is then pumped through a series of filters and grow beds where bacteria and plants breakdown and filter out the fishes waste. The cleaned water is then drained back into the fish tank to start the process over. It is apparently a very efficient use of water so far as farming goes because the only water leaving the system is actually in plant matter, which will be eaten or composted, and some evaporation. I wouldn't be suprised if you could grow seaweed in a similiar way and actually conserve water in comparison to more traditional farming methods.
So you are complaining that only 75% or so of the rent money your parents receive is profit? Well Boo Fucking Hoo! Maybe they should sell and buy a rental somewhere with lower property taxes and print more money, or just raise the cost of rent.
Maybe PE teachers have cushy work hours. All the teachers I know constantly have to bring their work home with them. Not to mention they are there long before the school day starts and often afterwards.
There is something to be said though about excessive spending on Education. The public school that I attended was ranked in the top ten and has particularly noted as being a very thrifty school system. Parental involvement, as with all things kid related, is likely the biggest factor in a childs academic success.
One of my friends teaches at the middle school level and has been physically assaulted at least once per year that I've known him. We're talking stitches and stuff, not a simple shove.
They aren't arguing against being held accountable for the quality of their work performance. They are rightly contending that standardized tests aren't an accurate measure of that. Standardized tests are the favorite method of bean counters though because it is cheaper than any method that would actually be accurate.
I attended a nationally ranked top ten high school. I had some insanely good teachers. And I frankly didn't give a crap about my grades, I never completed homework and barely graduated. The only tests I remember blowing off in my life were some standardized tests my senior year. I knew they didn't matter for me, my grade wouldn't be affected by them and I knew I was graduating. So I took a nap, after filling in all of the bubbles. As a responsible adult I regret it now only because I bet my teachers were given hell over it.
I seem to remember an episode about cheating on urinalysis tests. At the end they said that they did find one semi valid way to do it but weren't going to disclose it and then pronounced it busted. Or maybe it was the breathalyzer episode... I just don't remember anymore.
Someone recently posted a link to an aquaponics non-profit group, I don't remember if it was in this article or another. But it made for some very interesting reading. And frankly I'm trying to figure out how I could talk the wife into trying it out on a small scale.
Typically aquaponics is done without any soil but the linked group in Milwaukee does their own composting. They then use the compost in their aquaponics system to grow flowering vegetables that have more heavy nutrient demands than can typically be done otherwise. I find the whole thing fascinating, anyways link below.
That is correct, we could end up with a lot more arrable farmland in the long run. But in the short term I'd still expect food shrtages and famines. Just because there is more land that could be farmed doesn't mean it would be farmed right away. Clearing and otherwise preparing land for farming can be a pretty labor intensive and lengthy endeavor. And just because the soil is good and the land is flat and clear doesn't mean that you'll have enough precipitation, which would require large scale irrigation infrastructure in areas that don't currently have any.
I wouldn't say it's all doom and gloom but it's certainly not a bright and shiny future.
Not that I think it's a particularly good idea for a ship but they do heat driveways in some parts of the US to prevent icing. The setups I've seen usually use a geothermal system of some sort to keep the driveway above freezing temperatures. There has to be some drains installed to catch the runoff which is then piped below the frost line. Given that ground temperatures just a few feet down are typically in the 60's this shouldn't require any fancy heating system just a pump with a high enough flow rate to keep up with the weather trying to cool the cement slab.
Even the summary stated they don't think they'll find the perpetrator directly through this sampling. Instead they hope to find a relative who's DNA would be a close match or possibly share some semi unique trait. This could help them immensely by narrowing down the pool of suspects.
My impression was that this is strictly voluntary, so it's not exactly a violation of an individual citizens privacy. It will no doubt though cause lots of concern over whether or not the authorities will do as promised when it comes to destroying the samples that aren't needed. and it could possibly cause some civil rights issues if people that decline to be tested face negative consequences from their fellow citizens for not participating.
He was actually only caught because he paid someone else to submit a sample in his place, and that person then bragged about it. That case also happened pretty early on in the whole DNA as evidence era. Now a days I would expect a criminal to be much more cautious about the whole thing. Then again we are talking about criminals, and they aren't often known for their high intellect.
That depends. If the plates are contoured to fit the soft tissues underneath and spread the impact it would help a lot. Absorbing the kinetic energy of a bullet or bit of shrapnel and spreading it out over your entire torso would be much prefered to the alternatives. Flexibility doesn't magically stop all that energy from being absorbed, it does however slow down the punch so that it might not be as catastrophic.
I don't carry a cell phone anymore because it'd be completely useless to me for at least 95% of the time. If I did resume carrying one though I think I'd like to devise a faraday cage type case for it to reside in while not in use.
For whatever reason I haven't seen a port scan on one of my systems in a long time. But back when I did get them occasionally I'd track down the originating ISP and send their Administrator an email with the details of the incident. I usually would get an email back within a day or two saying they were looking into it.
Good point, but remember that this is for a largely cosmetic procedure performed normally on infants who are not capable of consenting to the risks. And how does this decision compare to the outlawing of drop side cribs which killed a dozen or so kids over the course of a decade?
I haven't seen the video but have traveled in some bad parts of Mexico. Even homeless people here in the states have a better standard of living than many of the people I met there. And like you mentioned their are people still in subsistence level situations day to day with no real hope of ever not being that way.
How is it not mutilation? It is the removal of tissue which is not reversible given our current medical technology. Female circumsion is no doubt often more painful and has more uncomfortable side affects for a longer time but there are also various forms of female circumsion, just as there used to be for males, some of which are not nearly so abhorrent.
I can see where your wife would be upset there. When dealing with kids you need to be very specific. You should have specified that he needed approval from his Mother, not just to ask her about it. Exceptional post there! I didn't pick up on it being humor until your examples, well done.
She was rather light skinned though wasn't she? And I seem to remember that she wore a silver outfit that covered much of her body.
Disclaimer - I think I've only ever read one x-men comicbook.
