the parent comment was about how the UK, as a state, has sovereignty; whether it obeys the will of (a slim majority of) its subjects is another story. you can make any point you want about the latter, but your first premise is nonsense. of course subjects don't have sovereignty; that's basically the entire point of a fucking state in the first place. you're either trolling or too stupid to live.
what about disabling or degrading some of the heavier elements of a page if the battery is low? seems courteous and reasonable to me; legitimate, even.
with an fft and engine sound database, you could get a not-too-terrible result in an hour or two just using nearest-neighbor methods. it's not totally trivial, but it's something i would expect an undergraduate to be able to do as homework.
try reading the paper about shazam's core method. it's amazingly simple (which isn't to say they haven't done a lot of work tweaking it of course).
frankly, the activist gays have mostly settled down now; they had their day in the sun and have now won at least 90% of what they wanted, and just want to go to sleep. meanwhile, the Republican party has renewed their banging of pots and pans against them in a battle they lost over 30 years ago and now can only be noisy about. of course this voting generation of gays are going to tend to vote Democrat. going Republican would almost be gratuitous contrarianism, especially when there are third-parties which are much more deserving than either of the major parties.
it's a lost cause, and it makes for cynical-sounding arguments. if it makes you feel any better, the next generation will be different.
hell, it just occurred to me that gays may well be the next generation's bulwark for family values. they've definitely gone down the toilet in heterosexual culture; the gays and lesbians who actually remember not being able to marry, whether you agree with them or not, are going to care a lot more about the subject than the average person.
even if you subscribe to the China-subverting-consumer-devices conspiracy theory (admittedly not as crazy as most other conspiracy theories), China would be better off taking the Apple money and investing that in other sabotage. counterfeiting iPhone hardware would inevitably be discovered and be catastrophic for China's tech industry.
that's because they actually want the problem solved because it affects them. the usual snake-oil salesmanship isn't that useful when you actually need the product.
in the end, the solution is euthanasia; let's face facts: some people just aren't that useful. we could shelter heroin addicts and give them subsidized junk until they die; with a competitive market and/or state-run chem lab for synthesis, it wouldn't even cost much, and it's not exactly an unpleasant way to go. even in SF, you could fit enough junkies per square meter to make it a cost-effective solution.
of course not everyone is a heroin addict, but parts of the principle still apply. also there's nothing wrong with a little "nudge" in that direction as long as it's not publicly recognized as coercion.
do you have a cite about getting the software installed at Foxconn? even if it were true, it's not necessarily relevant if Apple uses a sufficiently elaborate signing mechanism, as they seem to do. i'm still kind of curious about this for some reason.
i'd be really surprised if Apple outsourced their firmware development to Foxconn without auditing the shit out of it. they're pretty obsessive about that.
not to mention that Milo's entire act is based on relishing that persona. if it's offensive to him, he is either hiding it, or dealing with it on his terms.
both "sides" of this bullshit are looking for excuses to get offended on behalf of other people. that's typically because they are incapable of managing their own lives.
Normally, I'd say that a high-profile "free speech" site would last until the first credible death threat is posted, but Milo is different.
With Milo, I'd say that there's an even chance he'd immediately and remorseless dox every single one of its members given the slightest incentive, or maybe even just for lulz.
well, yes, but it doesn't really matter. truth is the first casualty in a war, and that goes double for "culture wars".
with "news" like this, there's nothing to do but just sit back and enjoy the frothing. it's kind of like watching a group therapy session, except pseudonymous and not very therapeutic.
yes, i refuse them, but ubuntu at least nags you constantly about it.
i'm using ubuntu because my time isn't completely worthless. don't bother telling me to use something else. i tried centos because it's supposed to be more stable, but the installer couldn't even finish booting because (apparently) it uses different disk device identifiers for loading the kernel and for the userspace environment, so it loses the disk and shits itself before even getting into runlevel 3. hilarious...
at this point, i'm seriously considering going with windows 10 and its ghetto posix support. i'm still waiting to see whether they can iron the bugs out, but afaic the bar is pretty fucking low.
the internet runs on ads, and people are stupid and like shiny things even if they're just shiny pictures of things they will want to buy.
yeah it's kind of a shitty system, but apparently no one wants anything else enough to actually pay for it.

it's not that new.

yeah, like how if you anally rape someone, it doesn't count as rape because it's not sex.

IT Workers are too independently-minded to form a union! Such blue-collar collectivism is far beneath them.
They don't seem to mind working for free, though. Apparently, they're not that independently-minded.
well, yeah, but that would be enough to solve it for the rich, and it's cheaper too.

will Apple also be taking advantage of this moment to hastily shut down the iPhone 6+ "screen death touch" outrage that's brewing?
Lenin. Stalin. Mao. Pol Pot. Twitter.

he meant free as in not paying for it.

you mean kind of like systemd replacing SysVinit? </troll>
that's how i feel whenever there's a Linux kernel update. nice to see Microsoft catching up finally!
