  1. Free Firmware Updates on Review of the Squeezebox · · Score: 1

Another cool thing about the Squeezebox is that the firmware is upgradable, and so is the hardware that does the audio decoding. When Slimdevices released the third generation of the Squeezebox, all I had to do was download the new version of Slimserver and my SB 2 got in-hardware WMA decoding for free!

One negative is that I'd say playlist editing is pretty painful with Slimserver... it's getting better with every release, but it's still got a ways to go.

  2. Re:Reading this... really gives me an idea. on Review of the Squeezebox · · Score: 1

I already own a Squeezebox 2, so having the DS act as one would be OK, but what I'd really like it to have it act as a WiFi remote. That's the one thing I really covet from Sonos is their slick remote.

There is a stripped down version of the Slimserver interface that can be accessed via PocketPC, but it's pretty slow to navigate. There is also a stand alone program that can control Slimserver for PocketPC (3rd party makes it, wants $45 for it), but the interface requires the use of a stylus, and is pretty cumbersome.

  3. Debian doesn't like new hardware on Which Linux for Professional Admins? · · Score: 1

I love debian on servers - when I can get it installed.

Trying to get it installed on recent hardware can be a nightmare. Debian is great for the first 6 months after release. After that drivers start to get out-of-date and I'm stuck trying to build my own kernels and modules for install.

Everyone always says to use testing and unstable, but I've tried those on my home server, and I don't want my production machines replacing half the packages on the box everytime I update - otherwise I'd be using Gentoo!

  4. Re:Kernel Versions? on UserLinux Releases First Beta · · Score: 1

In my case, it's because I'm buying new hardware, and I'd like to keep the same version of Linux installed across all our servers.

  5. Re:Kernel Versions? on UserLinux Releases First Beta · · Score: 0, Troll

The machine that I was having problems with is now in production running White Box Enterprise Linux - I didn't want to build a custom kernel. I'm not really looking for a fix for this particular moment in time, but thinking about a year or two from now when Sarge's kernel is getting long in the tooth.

  6. Kernel Versions? on UserLinux Releases First Beta · · Score: 5, Insightful

I love Debian on servers, that's the one place where packages not changing often is a good thing.

One big frustration I have with debian-stable is that the kernel gets so far out of date, that it doesn't support newer hardware properly. Will UserLinux try to keep more up-to-date with kernel versions. I don't need bleeding edge, but 2.4.18 is two and half years old!

Don't tell me to use debian-testing, I've tried it and it replaces too many packages too often for a production machine.

  7. RFID Tag Destruction Device? on RFID License Plates in the UK · · Score: 1

Does anyone make some sort of wireless RFID Tag Destruction Device? I'd imagine anything with an antenna can be fried without physical contact somehow. I did a quick search on google but didn't find anything.

As soon as RFIDs start appearing in everyday products, I'd buy one.

  8. Marimba == Prior Art on Software Installation/Update via Internet Patented · · Score: 1

Marimba was founded in 1996, and was doing internet delivery and updates of software. So wouldn't that be prior art, since it looks like the patent was submitted in 2001?

  9. MOSIX on UNIX Process Cryogenics? · · Score: 1
The MOSIX project does process migration on Linux. It works pretty well. I'm not sure what happens when the machine the process was launched from dies though, probably nothing good. =)

I love LyX. The xforms user interface is very clunky, but the printed output is always very professional looking. It helps keep your documentation consistent, and saves you from wasting time fudging with formatting.

  11. Mirrors Could RSync after receiving via MBONE on MBONE for Software Distribution? · · Score: 3

Since MBONE isn't for reliable data transfer, the mirrors could receive most of an iso image of the RedHat archive, then use RSync to "correct" any of the errors. Anyone who has built a debian image this way (download all the packages seperately, cat them together with 2048byte block padding, then use rsync to rearrange the files and add the rest of the iso data to the image). Very cool stuff.

If you look in the back of Discover or Popular Science magazines, there is usually a couple ads for those sort of machines. I think you are still looking at $1k-$2k though.

  14. Kinesis Classic on Ergonomic Keyboards · · Score: 1

I have a Kinesis Classic QD (lets you switch between Qwerty and Dvorak on the fly). I never bothered learning Dvorak, but this keyboard is awesome. It took me a couple months to get back up to original speed, but my wrists don't hurt or feel tired anymore. Well worth the $300 it cost me!

Also, I have no trouble switching back to a normal keyboard when I'm on other computers. But you do tend to feel the tension in your wrists, more proof that Kinesis really works.

I wish they would have a downloadable demo version of CodeWarrior too, I'd like to play with the GUI and editor a little to see if I like it.
