  1. Poor article on Vint Cerf on Why TCP/IP Was So Long in Coming · · Score: 0

This is a poor article, the slashdot summary is 95% directly quoted from the one page article.

That aside, the reason virtual circuits have never taken off is lack of physical media and field equipment. An ISP/Cable Company/Local Bell is not going to support running lines out to homes and businesses if they don't have subscribers for all their investment.

I've never seen an implementation where statistical multiplexing was implemented properly. I think it is just one of those things that look good on paper, but will never come into general use unless the technology and infrastructure support it.
Look at what they do now they run a T1 out to a DSLAM and split it up all to hell and oversell the bandwith going from the DSLAM to the ISP. Show me someone with 7MB burstable speed actually transmit at that speed and I'll do a goddamn backflip.

  6. Re:4 count 'em 4 wires. on Why Are T1 Lines Still Expensive? · · Score: 0

Wrong. Look at a smartjack. It's fed by two wires. Most of them even say xDSL on them.

Indeed, the smartjack puts out four wires (tx/rx pair) but it's only a pair of copper that's feeding it.

    Go look. Seriously.

Ah, grasshopper, you were not looking at a T1 line!

There a format called HDSL2 that can transport a T1 signal on two wires. The signal is transported via HDSL2 to the NIU where it is converted back into T1. So your T1 signal really doesn't exist in an unencapsulated state until it leaves the dmarc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDSL

One of the selling points of HDSL2 was that it would only need one pair to transport a DS1 signal.

Comicly enough, when I worked for one of the carriers we had plenty of HDSL2 in the field, but the software that tracked which pairs were in use automaticly reserved four wire slots. So, all our HDSL2 had an extra pair of wires hanging around unused. This was great for troubleshooting!

Von Neumann built a solid framework for quantum mechanics. He also worked in game theory, was able to investigate spaces with continuously varying dimensions, and was one of the pioneers of computer science.
Gary Gygax, the one who brought us Dungeons and Dragons. What self respecting nerd has never killed an orc?
