That's about stupid. In effect, WalMart should assume responsibility for that mouthy punk who used WalMart's intercom system to tell all black people to leave the store. WalMart is racist, because some kid used their intercom to make a racial statement. Extending that idea just a little bit - if you owned a shopping mall, and some skin heads staged a protest on your property, (with or without your permission) then you would be responsible for all the hate speech that resulted.
The fact is, many nations, including mine, have fascist laws that need to be changed. We need more activists working to make free speech a reality, and stop holding web sites and site administrators responsible for the rantings of ignoramuses.
I wouldn't be willing to give up very much of anything for Africans, Asians, Europeans, or even for Martians if we found that Martians are starving. The fact is, Africa has enough resources to provide for their own people. The real problems in Africa center on two core issues: warfare, and education. So long as millions of people remain uneducated, and rely on ages old superstitions born of ignorance (having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS, for instance) there isn't a whole lot that can be done about Africa's poverty. Worse, young men are going off to join one army or another, to kill their neighbor's young men. What can you expect of war ravaged nations?
The governments need to mandate that the kids are given decent educations, and they need to stop the warring factions. That done, the world couldn't do much to hold them back.
That isn't paranoia - it's good common sense. Statistics tell us that an ungodly number of computers are compromised. Why do your banking and other sensitive online transactions from a potentially compromised machine? Use those LiveCD's, or a virtual machine, or almost ANYTHING other than your Windows browsing and porn watching machine!!
"That's because you're white and look like a Ukrainian, "
I'm a bit older than you. I remember when Poles, Slovaks, and others weren't "white". I don't know how many generations your family has been here, but maybe you should talk to your grandparents about being "white". In my hometown, there were 4 distinct ethnic regions: Black, White, Italian, and Slovak. Today, those boundaries have been pretty much erased, but the oldtimers still remember them.
Yeah - I didn't think of that, but you're right. More people use Yahoo than anything else, period. I see that among people whose machines I work on. Somebody mod the hairy dude up!!
Very good point. When I want to see a video, the first place I go is youtube. I mean, I often times don't even Google - I just go to Youtube, and do a search in Youtube's own search bar. There's not much point in googling around, and getting hits on Gaytube, Ponytube, HotrodTube, Mommytube, even if all of them actually HAD what I was looking for. I KNOW that someone has posted to Youtube!!
"The outcome is that no other company can compete in Google's area."
Horse shit. Or, Bing. The two terms amount to the same thing. There are more than a dozen search engines available on the web, and I haven't seen any of them go bankrupt. They must be competing, even if only in niches. Go back to school, and learn what a fucking MONOPOLY really is. The only MONOPOLY that I've seen in the computing industry in the last couple of decades, was Microsoft.
Now - IF you want to question the business practices that are used by Google - you might have some legitimate complaints. They do some things that I don't approve of. But, everything that Google does is pretty much done redundantly throughout the industry. You think that Bing and Yahoo and all the smaller search providers aren't datamining? Phhht. You're not that naive. You can NOT be that naive.
The fact is, Google has the best product on the market when it comes to search, unless you fit into one or more niches that is better served by one of the little guys.
Oh - Bing? That is one sack of smelly shit. Typical Microsoft offering, I would say.
Around the turn of the century (20th century) copyright was good for about 15 years. Every bit of the additional time we see today is at the behest of the "music industry". That is, little people never would have, nor could they have, extended copyright to life of the artist plus 75 years, or any of that other nonsense.
I have zero respect for any copyright that would have expired according to law, as it existed, in the 1800's.
And, no, the money invested by the studios, etc, does not warrant extending copyright. I don't care that they spent 5 million dollars to produce it, and another 12 million in advertising and sales. If a song is any good, they make all of that back in a few months. If the song is no good, then they screwed up by investing all that time and money.
This is 2010. Any song produced before 1995 should be public domain now. Unfortunately, songs produced before I was born (1956) are still being milked for a few more coins.
Screw all the entertainment industry. They don't get my money, because they are full of crap. It's just that simple. I find better entertainment at blue grass festivals, or going to the park to listen to people jamming, or going to a night club. I'll be damned if I'll allow big industry to steal money from my pocket for stuff that BELONGS to me.
Yeah, yeah, here's where someone chimes in, "But, the law has been changed!" I don't give a rip. Buying a politician or a dozen politicians doesn't make the law right.
~360k down, ~190k up. If I could afford it, I'd get the 1Mb package, but that's as good as it gets where I live. I'm paying $75/month now, and the rest of that Mb package isn't worth what they're asking for it . . . .
I've heard that people in the city can get muliples of that 1Mb package, for less than I'm paying for my 360k. Wow. You guys have it good, huh? I even hear stuff like Gb downloads, but I think those college kids have been smoking some wild stuff, ya know?
"Yeah! I never would have heard about the movie and subsequently downloaded it from The Pirate Bay if not for the Youtube parodies too!"
I would ditto that, but I can't quite bring myself to dedicate 12 to 20 hours of bandwidth so that I can watch some movie that I may like or not. I'm sure not going to spend MONEY on it!!
You are still deluded by the idea that a song is "property". File sharing is NOT equivalent to shoplifing. It is NOT theft. It may be dishonest, but it isn't theft.
More, file sharing is NOT dishonest, in any way shape or form, when sharing files that properly belong in the public domain. You know, songs released prior to about 1980, or possibly even 1990. The REAL dishonesty is what's happening in Washington, and all the other capitals in the world. RIAA and company are buying representative's votes to extend copyright from ~15 years to FOREVAH!!
Go on, tell me that's honest. Try to do it with a straight face.
Hey - you really ought to give credit where credit is due. Microsoft really has improved security here. Now, instead of XSS destroying the user's computer, they are using the computer to destroy sites. That's an improvement, really. Webmasters shouldn't be using XSS anyway. In effect, XSS is a statement, to the effect, "I'm so cheap that instead of hosting my own content, I'm gonna cheat and allow OTHER SITES to serve up the content, while I get the credit for what you see!"
I can see some good coming of this IE8 exploit. If it causes enough trouble, everyone will abandon XSS, and the browsers will just disable XSS, everyone will be happier.
VMWare had a cool feature, the last time I played with it. You can take a snapshot of an existing system, convert it into a Virtual Machine, then store it somewhere. I haven't used VMWare for awhile now, so I can't remember the correct term for this little conversion thing. Just head on over to their site, and do a search or six to find it. Pretty cool feature, really. I don't know why VirtualBox hasn't done the same thing. Well - to be honest, I don't know if VBox can do that or not - I've never stumbled over that feature.
Before you head off to VMWare's site, be aware that they have several different applications. VMWare player will only "play" VM's that have already been built. The main VM application can build and run the VM's. I think this conversion utility was a separate program though.
Yes, of course there are schools out there that teach real computer science. UMass at Amherst sounds like a helluva good school, if they are ensuring that you are competent on all three major platforms. But, for every school like yours, there are at least 4 others that teach MS-centric "computer science". My eldest son attended one such college. Everything he did was on a Windows machine, and he is far less competent with the command line than his younger brother who is graduating high school next month. Put big brother on a *nix box, and he's pretty much lost. Yeah, he can find the Firefox icon, and other such simple stuff, but he doesn't understand the file system, or much of anything else.
Be proud that you're getting a better education than my son.
Seriously - I've met lazy swine of every race, color, religion, and culture. Just as I've met hard working dedicated people of every race, color, religion and culture.
If your own personal prejudices blind you to the good in some people, that is your loss. And, it also makes you far less valuable to the world. Try to get over it. Someone, somewhere, COULD HAVE BEEN your best freind and your greatest asset in life, if you hadn't been prejudiced against his skin color.
I scrolled down a ways. I don't think anyone has hit on the underlying reason.
About 15 years ago, MS started giving their products away for free, or very nearly free, to the education system. Schools ate it up. 80%+ of all schools in the US teach kids on MS systems. That goes for elementary, high school, and college. The kids learn how to do things the fast and easy way, and the Microsoft way.
Today's young developers learned the MS way, and they aren't about to go wandering into the open source ways of doing things, unless there is some really big incentive. And, the fact is, Linux really isn't high profile and high dollar, like MS.
In short, last decade's monopoly is paying off for MS today.
"You get what you pay for", or, "A fool and his money are soon parted"?
I think it's more the story of the fool and his money. Don't buy DRM, people! DRM is a promise that you'll be screwed, later if not sooner. Think hard, then name a half dozen DRM schemes that have lasted for years, and STILL WORK. I'll bet you can't do it. No one supports much of anything after just a couple years. Windows XP was probably the longest lasting support story, and that was what? 7 years?
Yeah. Solaris. I've downloaded and installed it a few times now. Both on hardware and in VM's. I play around with it, then end up deleting it. I don't do serious server work, and everything I need to do can be done quickly and easily in Linux. I guess that Solaris/openSolaris is important to some people, but not to the average geek. Certainly not to the average person, LMAO
It would be something of a shame if Solaris dies off - but I won't miss it a great deal. Weekend hackers? I think most of them will feel as I do. If not, then a bunch of them can band together, and do OpenSolaris on their own. In a year or so, I'll download the resulting OS, and see how it runs.
Yeah - I'm kinda watching that BTRFS. I like the idea of hotplugging more hard drives into a RAID array. Yeah, I know, technically, that's not what I'm doing, but that's the end effect. RAID 99+ anyone?
Well, maybe I should have said "Chinese" rather than "Chinaman". But, the term "French man" seems to be alright. Bleahh. Whatever.
But, I WAS specifically referring to Chinese people, and not to "Chinese-Americans". How did you get the idea that I was referring to immigrants to America? No hyphenations needed for people who live on their own hereditary lands, right?
You are a real douche. When you look at a line up of Euro faces, all charged and/or convicted of crime, do you think "racism"? If you see a page on a Chinese site that lists the crimes of a bunch of Chinamen, do you think "racism"? In the case of 419 scams, the huge majority of perpetrators happen to be black people. So - they get their pics on the internet, along with a description of their crimes. Racism?
Douche bag. Get a life. They are posted online, not because they are black, but because they are scammers.
No, Mr. Ballmer - nothing has changed in Linux in years now. It's safe to stick your head back up your arse, and assume that Windows is superior to everything in the world. The schmucks out there still believe it, and sales are stable.
Obviously, you have no comprehension of "fair use". Of course RIAA doesn't force anyone to purchase and/or to pirate entertainment. But, they are actively seeking to extend copyright law far beyond anything that is reasonable.
Much of the music being downloaded today is properly in the public domain. Much more is being downloaded to circumvent overly restrictive DRM.
RIAA sucks, as do all the other **AA's that work to deny freedom and liberty.
That's about stupid. In effect, WalMart should assume responsibility for that mouthy punk who used WalMart's intercom system to tell all black people to leave the store.
