I've often railed against our high incarceration rates. The problem is, non-violent, non-dangerous people are locked up along with violent, dangerous criminals.
Tax fraud? Why lock a man up for tax fraud? Penalize him FINANCIALLY! Double his taxes for 3 years for each year in which he committed fraud. Putting him in prison is a waste of resources, not to mention a waste of his talent.
More people are in prison for drug related crimes than anything else. Let's legalize and/or decriminalize drugs. Regulate and tax the damned stuff. End the "War on Drugs", which in reality is a war on US citizens.
With the end of that war, half our prison population will dry up and disappear.
Anyone who claims that our prisons are rehabilitative are totally out of touch with reality. It is at least as accurate to say that petty criminals who find their way to prison get the opportunity to learn new and better ways of committing crime.
If we ever correct the serious disconnect between the idealists' vision of prison, and the reality of prison, then we MIGHT begin to correct the abortion we have today.
The United States has one of the highest per capita incarceration rates in the world. Those cells are built, and kept filled, more to keep revenue flowing throughout government and society, than to "rehabilitate" anyone. The prison system is so lucrative, private corporations are getting into the act.
Please, just drop the rehab crap. IF rehab is really a part of the prison system, it's so relatively unimportant that we can ignore it.
Thanks to actions taken by Nazi Germany almost 70 years ago, eugenics is a dirty word in most of the world today. But, eugenics actually makes sense. If this fool is defective, then those defective genes should be flushed from the gene pool.
We have actually been practicing the reverse of eugenics. We assist congenitally deformed and defective infants to survive to adulthood, so that they can pass on their congenital conditions. It's admirable to accept Downs' syndrome children, for instance. As a society we invest huge amounts of resources to make their lives better, and more rewarding. But - what exactly do those children contribute to society? More faulty genes, of course.
I don't have the stomach to put all defective children out for the wolves to eat, like the Romans and the Spartans are claimed to have done. But, really, it's time we stopped working so very hard to ensure that every defective child matures to breeding age. It does nothing but weaken us, as a race. (I mean the "Human" race - I do NOT mean anything at all like the Nazi's, or white supremacists mean by "race".)
Yes, you can mark your stuff as "private" in a lot of places - but they are still hosted in the cloud. I haven't poked far enough into Opera Unite, but I don't think they cache your pics. Meaning, once Grandma gets those pics, you can remove them from your shared photo, and no one else is going to get them, either from Google cache, a guessed password, or whatever. Besides - will Flickr share your warez files, or your ripped MP3's? It seems that Unite will share ANYTHING you want to share.
The target market is the not-tech savvy home user. Grandma wants to see the newest pics of her grandchildren getting a bath, and styling the new clothes she sent to them. Momma ain't real tech savvy, but she can put those pics into a folder, then invite her mother (in-law) to view the folder via unite. Easey-peasey. There's no need to put those pics on MySpace, Facebook, or any other hosting site - they are private. In fact, putting naked baby cheeks on the web just MIGHT get someone arrested for child pornography - the laws are crazy in some places.
But, don't forget - it's open source. I browsed through the file system. It's Linux. No matter what Google finally releases as the "official" ChromeOS release, all of us abnormal geeky types can go in and tweak to our heart's content. Look for unofficial ChromeOS releases soon after - or maybe even BEFORE - Google releases version 1.0
Isn't that kinda similar to the war Slackware got it's start? Some dude wanted Linux to do something that the official releases weren't doing?
I take it that you are suggesting I should join twitter, and get my news from there? Hmmmm. No thanks. Somehow, I find slashdot to be more credible than twitter - sometimes at least.
Citations, or you're full of feces. Where are the rumors? How many employees does Opera have in China? Mysteriously disappear? WTF? Has the manager of the Opera store gone missing in Beijing?
You've posted essentially the same thing several times, but you're the ONLY source I have for any missing Opera employees. Even rumors need more than one source.
My own opinion is, corporations have no business aiding and abetting censorship. I've thought pretty well of Opera, until now. This is the sort of whoring that helps to give Microsoft THEIR bad name. It irritates me when any of them goes this route. Somewhere in China sits an asshole just like me, except for the color of his skin, and the government is just waiting for him to slip up, giving them a reason to "reeducate" him. The corporate whores are more than happy to sell him out....
"Also, if the government "mandated" that there were more doctors certified each year, you'd just have a bunch of unqualified doctors running around.......which is much, MUCH worse than having a shortage of doctors."
Maybe. Let's suppose that the gov mandated that more people were put INTO the school. Let's assume that a number of people don't even make the grade. Maybe they reach internship, and find that they can't carry the load. Not a total loss - we have a pool to draw from for paramedics, and maybe physician's assistants. Let's say that before we ever get to internship, we've lost a lot of people. If they've completed the first two years of med school, they are qualified to be EMT's, without question. (I am an EMT - all the training I've received in my life maybe equals 1 year of med school, certainly not much if any more.)
The gov need not lower the bar for qualified physicians. Even if 80% of that increase in students never become doctors, we've STILL managed to increase the number of doctors by that 20%. It looks like a win/win situation to me. Every workplace should have an EMT, paramedic, or industrial nurse available. These are the people who must stabilize and transport the patient, before any doctor ever looks at him/her. The real life savers are always found out in the field, believe it or not.
Tjstork shouldn't be modded "troll". Our constitution guarantees us "life liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness". Happiness is not a given.
Next thing to consider is, all of the medical practices are considered "arts". Psychiatry is not a science, with quantifiable, qualitative states. It's all guesswork. You can't plug someone into a freaking machine, and say, "I can measure x units of schizophrenia, x units of depression, and x units of whatever else".
At least with physical health, much of what might be wrong with a patient is measurable. Blood pressure, pulse, respiration, blood chemistry, urine and stool specimens. You have nothing like that with psychiatry.
Parent has a valid point, in that people with physical problems often have to work, unless that physical problem measurably impairs their ability to work. Psych problems? Fat chance. All we have is the doctor's word. How can we know this is NOT yet another scam to take the insurance companies for a ride?
Part of the reason I'm skeptical of shrinks is, I've read and heard plenty of stories about people who had grave psych problems, who were admitted into various programs to "cure" them. Amazingly, many are "cured" just about the time that all available funding expires. What a coincidence, huh? IMHO, they were scams from start to finish.
As for those who say the insurance companies are ripping us off, so they deserve to be ripped off - I ask, "Why not fix the real problem?" Here in the states, at least, we have healthcare reform on the table right now. Part of the goal is to limit the insurance company's ability to rip us off, and another part is to limit the ability of "customers" to rip off the insurance. Why the hell should 95% of honest, working people have to foot the bill for those 5% dishonest insurers, care providers, as well as customers? FFS, if we could eliminate the graft and corruption, ALL OF OUR BILLS could be cut by 20% or more!!
Send all the thieves to jail, and stop trying to justify your favorite thief.
Bullshit. Everyone dies, everyone gets sick, everyone visits the hospital. If you actually "talk to people", as you imply, you can and will find that tens of thousands of elderly (keyword: ELDERLY) smokers have been healthy all their lives, and have never been in hospital for anything more than childhood illnesses, childbirth, or maybe an accident. The anti-smoking hysteria simply goes to far, and cretins make idiot claims just like yours. We recently buried a smoker who hadn't even been in hospital for childbirth - when she gave birth, the hospital was a day's ride away! Tobacco had nothing to do with her demise. Diabetes killed her. All I can say is, stop drinking the Kool-Aid. Smoking is foolish, but it isn't the new asbestos, or DDT, FFS.
Alright - assuming that you don't know how to configure bit torrent, then you'll almost certainly NOT want to download this prototype of an alpha operating system. ChromeOS may be ready to rock for the average user in a year or so, but right now, it's not even made it to a public alpha stage. Almost nothing works. It's something to play with - e-peen for geeks.
Now get off my lawn. Go play with your - uhhh - windows or something.
Oh wait - I have an idea for you. If your torrent client clogs your intartubez, you should install Wondershaper. Have fun - but I still want you off my lawn!
Just one thing, for now. There is a huge difference between a breach and a failure. Even if the corps of engineers had updated the system every ten years, made repairs, and strengthened suspected weak spots, there would still have been breaches. The question is, how severe a breach?
Note that flood control relied on redundant protections. The city had pumps available, because it was expected that water might get into the city. Those pumps were running, and handling all the inflow of water handily, until those two panels began to fail. As those failures worsened, the pumps began lagging behind.
Great post - I'll check out your links, and see how much I can learn from them.;^)
I just got off work, and I'm just to tired to do the search that I ought to do. Anyone can google if they care to.
The retaining walls in New Orleans failed in exactly two places. No more, and no less. In precisely those two places, the N.O. water and sewer department had disturbed the wall, years earlier. They lifted the panels out of the wall, and out of the prepared soil in which they had been planted. After making alterations to these panels, they were lifted back into place, and set back on the very same groung, without any work being done to the ground.
Some people who have never been around a construction site may need to ask around, or research, but I'll tell you what you'll find. Lifting a fencepost, a wall, or anything out of the ground, breaks built up adhesion. In fact, adhesion is going to lift great gobs of dirt along with whatever you are lifting. When you put that fencepost, or panel, or whatever BACK into the hole, you will have voids. Voids are conducive to water flow.
And, those two panels that failed, did so BECAUSE water had percolated UNDER them, removing all the loosened soil under and around the panels. Once all the loose soil was gone, water flow increased, washing out more and more stabilized earth.
Eventually, the walls collapsed when several panels were left without any support.
Bottom line? That judge is full of shit. The New Orleans water and sewer department caused the city to flood. Katrina was not the primary cause, nor were the Corps of Engineers. Water and sewer fools who had no idea what they were doing, took it upon themselves to tamper with vital infrastructure, without consulting the Corps.
I'm going to bed. If I'm barraged with challenges, maybe I'll find the pertinent reports for everyone when I get up. But, I'm sure that SOMEONE can find the news articles as well as the reports.
Wait - you think that an ex-cheerleader and ex-beauty queen is qualified to be POTUS? A woman who was caught up in scandal while serving PART of a term as governor? The same woman who QUIT HER JOB as governor, so she would have time to write a book? THAT Sara Palin? PUH-LEASE!!!!
Be honest - Palin's strongest point is her looks, and her second strongest is her faith in God. What else can she bring to the (arguably) most powerful office in the world? Please, don't ask me to vote for her cup size. I'm as lecherous as any 50 year old, but those mams won't do us any good at all when the shit hits the fan.
"It all still comes down to what you're willing to stand for."
I couldn't help it. I read that sentence, and the first thought through my mind was, "We don't seem to stand for much of anything these days, but we'll lay down for anything at all!" 24/7 surveillance, ACTA, and a lot of other crazy things make me think that.
The most common excuse for all this crap is "Think of the children!" It makes me wonder how any of us survived world before cameras, internet, cell phones, etc ad nauseum.
Ohhhh-kay. I'll agree, some Japanese probably do just fall in love with the silly name. For all I know, the word "yahoo" means something in Japanese that really is cool. But - what excuse do all the rest of the weird people in the world have?
Someone mentioned above that Yahoo is for twelve year olds. I would add all the clueless users of the world to that. From day one, I never saw anything on Yahoo that would induce me to use their services. On the other hand, I liked what I saw on Google immediately.
But - China takes cheap shots at every one of us, every day with the trash they are marketing worldwide. How can anyone refrain from taking cheap shots at China?
Here, just have some milk chocolate from China. It'll help you feel better.
Agreed. Sometimes the only way to motivate people to fix a problem is to embarrass them in public. FFS, no part of any critical operation should ever be exposed to the internet, period. If is't sensitive, keep it isolated from everyone - including your billing departement, public relations, sales, and even the company officers. Whenever they need to see something sensitive, they can pick their lead arses up, and move to an office dedicated to the internal workings of the company. When they are ready to put on their happy power hats, and interface with the world, they can return to their own office.
Uhhh - wait. We are all aware that a canine critter is a carnivore, right? A predator. A killer. Well - actually, most of them are scavengers. But still.
Just to be clear, I like dogs too - but I have no delusions about their innocence. Cats too. The only reason we get along with cats so well, is because we are huge, and they are small. Reverse the size, and those foul beasts would enjoy playing cat and human with us.
Given a choice between a freaking huge cat, or a freaking huge dog, I'll take the dog. Dogs really are kinda innocent - they just snap your head off and swallow. Those cats are evil......
Ooops - I spoke to soon. Gotta have OpenSSL (0.9.8l) - that's a letter l at the end, not a number 1. We ain't safe - but I'll be compiling the blasted thing real soon. Debian has no l available in any repository I looked at.
I've often railed against our high incarceration rates. The problem is, non-violent, non-dangerous people are locked up along with violent, dangerous criminals.
