Not sure about the ones that people are buying in the UK but as far as Dell, its cheaper to buy a Windows PC. To my surprised some people actually buy the Windows version and replace that with Linux. Like this PC I'm on at work running Ubuntu (no doul boot) with a Windows XP license sticker on the case. If anything I would say they balance each other out, but windows to Linux is probably more the case as theres still significantly more pre-installed windows machines.

I think you're right about the tiger data. In your area they might still be using the original data, in some areas they have volunteers that go around with a GPS and some other tools and update this information. They explain on their site how to update it if you're interested.

As far as the bike paths, it could be more bikers have the GPS devices and are contributing? My area seems pretty well covered, maybe I overestimated how well its covered in other areas though.

As for a job cleaning, your probably right. What I mean is some women take pride in having a clean home. Like strive to be great at it where I haven't seen too many men get into it the same (as with cooking or fashion). Even though I was being a little sarcastic, that's not at all a bad thing, I don't see why its a problem, yes some women want to be math geniuses and programmers and maybe in some places find resistance in that but feminist make it seem like your a barbarian or living in the ice age if your a female or want a female that wants to have babies and maintain the house (cleaning, cooking, the kids health, usually keeping track of the bills and more also), its not like its an easy job or not challenging -- it can be as rewarding as you make it. But guess what, to grow as a community someone has to have babies (men can't do it, nature has already chosen ladies to do this, this also impedes on their professional success in life, naturally. This has nothing to do with men keeping females down.). Then someone has to raise and care for them - which the natural choice would again be the female - as naturally she is the one that has to breastfeed, therefore the man has to work and progress in his professional career. Plus theres nothing like a Hispanic barefoot chick with a straw broom in the kitchen :).

OpenStreetMap.org provides this data for free... of course this is updated by a community with still some areas not being fully covered, but its pretty complete. I've heard that the bike paths from openstreetmap are acctually better than commercial ones. They just provide the 'tiles' or data though. PyRoute is a free application which takes this data and comes up with the directions, etc. Not sure exactly how far they've gotten it but from the openmoko channel some people are already using it on their openmoko along with other applications that use data from openstreetmaps. The data part is now free, its writing a program that works fast and reliably using this data that seems to be where we are at right now, I have no doubts that it will not be too long till the open source world gets this working nicely though.

It's a computer with GPS and a GSM (modem? not sure if thats what it'd be called) oh plus wifi, bluetooth, etc. The question is, what CAN'T you do with it? The only limit is space (2 gigs on card) and speed. There are apps out there, like PyRoute and others which allow you to get the street map info for free (openstreetmap.org) and the application does the routing, etc. I'm sure if there isn't already there will soon be commercial apps that will do the same. But think about it, that could be your phone, mp3/media player (it plays video too), pda, email/im/etc., bluetooth remote to your media server :) and so much more. Host & client USB also increases those possibilities.

Men are pretty much better at whatever they want to be better at. Now I understand all history books were written by "men", yada yada, but if you pick the best male mathematician of all time agaisnt the best female mathematician of all time who is better? Or the best alive, or even the top 5 would be men before a female even entered the list. Even a fruit cup will jump into pretty much a 99.9% womans industry and dominate (ie. Fashion). Females might be better at cooking and cleaning, but we gave you that one... wait not cooking, the best chefs are male -- atleast you can clean?

  10. ValuSoft??!? on Best Buy Is Selling Ubuntu · · Score: 1

I don't think Canonical is seeing any money from this. The packaging, etc is completly different than the one they link to from their site at Amazon, and nowhere does it look like it comes from ValuSoft. With GPL software you are allowed to modify the software and sell it forward or not even change anything and sell it. Plus what the .. is Ubuntu Complete Edition? If you want to support them by buying it I would go with Amazon for now until we know what's up. Sounds like ValuSoft trying to make some money off free software they didn't put any work into. (They should sell it with 1yr support though for a higher price and a nice manual or something.)
