A former boss of mine put it to me rather eloquently... A person is promoted up to the point they become incompetent, and thats where they stay. I've found it to be pretty much true wherever I've been.
The only thing that stands out to me in the picture is the red penguin sitting next to... what? a little volcano? Is that supposed to signify that the development kernel can blow up at any time or something? *confused*
I'd just like to have a little hand held device that I could use on those cars that I inevitably get stuck next to in traffic, the ones with the bass that thumps so hard it makes my mirrors vibrate. Man it'd be so cool to just go "zap" and see those guys start fiddling with thier stereos in panic when it stops working. Not sure if the blast could be focused like that or not... it's fun to think about though.
"nor should you be responsible if your account was used for illegal activity, unknown to you."
now really... humor me here for a second. what legal things can you (would you) download from kazaa? favorite distro iso's maybe, if the ftp server is Slashdotted or something. I honestly can't think of anything legal I'd go to kazaa to get.
"Woz, the archetype of the computer good guy,"
Heh... you know Woz used to sell a device that was used to make illegal long distance phone calls. a few links
I've set up and played games on my desktop system running Linux before. I won't bother with it again. What a disappoinment it was... trying to get a joystick to work, making sure the XF86Config file has the resolutions and color depths all set, game features that don't work on the Linux version, getting game mods installed... not me, I don't need that kind of punishment from a game.
actually, I did that as well. No big deal there either. I told them exactly what you just said, I change my parts... hose my system and reinstall fairly frequently. They said "ok". I was on and off the phone and finished in under about 2 minutes. I was really expecting to be read the riot act and be accused of being a thief and all that as well, never happened. My level of respect for MS went up a notch because of my experience with reactivating. I still don't like the whole idea of activation, but the way MS is handling it is at least tolorable.
hehe no doubt. I actually switched from money to quicken for just that reason a few years back. Just last week I bought money again. I've had to call MS to reactivate Windows when I built a new computer. Pretty painless, the person I spoke with was really easy going. I didn't feel like they though I was trying to just get a second system going. I'm hearing quite a different tale from people dealing with Intuit and reactivation though.
I consider this pretty responsible on thier part. I mean 8 out of a couple million over a two year span... thats a pretty low failure rate as far as I'm concerned. Compare this to say the fujitsu http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/archive/27136.html hard drive fiasco and I'll buy APC again. Of course the fujitsu drive didn't pose a fire hazard but look at how hard they tried to dodge responsibility.
Of the 8 reported 3 have cause minor property damage. Without seeing pictures this could mean something like "it left a dark spot on my desk" I'm giving the benefit of the doubt here that "minor property damage" doesn't mean "the second floor of my building burned down".
"Anyway, its good to hear some positive news from the BSD camp. Lets hope they clear up the problems with their license so BSD can match RMS's definition of 'open source'"
I wouldn't look for that anytime soon. The BSD folks tend to look at the GPL as restrictive and I agree with that. The only way to make software more free than the BSD license would be to release it as public domain.
I was about to respond to this post with an explanation that it may turn out I might get shot by some average idiot walking down the street. At least I don't need to worry about being gunned down by my own government in broad daylight in front of the rest of the world... then I remembered Waco... shit
Thanks, I hadn't heard of that before :)

You just don't get this kind of exitement with Microsoft products ;)
Yea, down by the Rio Grande river... ;)

doh! upon actually RTFA again, it appears to be another new technology release.
I don't see anything stating whether this will be another new technology release or production release. Anyone here know what it'll be?

Be thankful they weren't in a jpg... that lossy compression and all
aside from Microsoft and SCO I think you got it all :)

In a poll at Extremetech. The question was if you're leaving Windows for Linux, why?

So far only 23 people have voted but of those over half are leaving because of a serious distaste for Microsoft.
whoops... started using Linux in June '99. Registered Nov 2000
How do the numbers work? My number is 193708 but there are 130,000 users? I got my number in June of '99.
Can you hear me now? ;)

In some countries the person who started this discussion would have been shot just for starting this discussion. Anyone remember Tianemen Square?
