I thought linux users wanted freedom and choice of what OS they use, oh wait you can have the choice to run linux and thats all. Evidently hotmail and cdrom.com have a need for BSD. Can't you see its the same guy that always does this with BSD?
Do you have any proof to claim that linux is faster than BSD? In what way? A better server, a better desktop OS? I use OpenBSD for my firewall and in 6 months do you know how many security patches I've needed? Zero. How many remote root exploits did redhat 6.2 have?
You have an ultra secure OS thats ported to a dozen different architectures. I personally don't care what attitude Theo has, I use the OS for its features. Funny you should mention his attitude, theres a certain RMS interview you should read where he interrupts the guy interviewing. Look at the part where he says people shouldn't get paid for closed source software.
yeah it plays all my 5 year old quicktime clips with the cinepak codec, but nothing modern. I seriously hate having to download modules and compile them in, MS definately has you beat here, Their media player supports everything. Xanim can't even play standard mpeg files, try some of the 30fps ones at www.nineinchnails.net. I thought mpeg was an open standard? That commercial mtv mpeg player is alright, but linux is so damn slow in playing them. Forget trying to watch anything full screen. Under windows that would take about 30% cpu usage. Personally for multimedia I think BeOS has everyone beat.
break the law even more. I hate to bring this up but making an mp3 is illegal if you don't own the cd. You're just kicking a hornets nest. The RIAA is a multi billion dollar industry that can hire hundreds of high priced lawyers that will win. If you really supported bands and their music, you would buy their cd so they get the lousy 50 cents.
Instead of finding more creative ways to break copyright laws, how about going about changing them? You know I don't like these murder laws, in protest I'll go kill some people. See my point?
1) unless you have a 286 or even an 8088 I think you have a cdrom drive. What computer made in the last 6 years doesn't?
2) there a many freeware and GNU cdda extracting and mp3 encoding programs. ripping a song only takes a few minutes. My cdrom rips at 8x, so 30-45 seconds per song.
3) why would you need upload your cd collection anywhere? If you bought a cd you most likely own a cd player of some sort, and you work computer does not have a cdrom? see number 1.
4) unless you have a 386 or 486 encoding mp3 files takes only a few minutes. And like I stated before theres a ton of free encoders.
They didn't use some lame script kiddie buffer overflow, the problem was with the config files. They could have modofied the apache source and not told anyone.

government inspections?
on
Silicon Hell
·
· Score: 1
Do you think that steak you ate last night was really safe just because some government agency said it was? Inspectors can be paid off, and many people know ahead of time when an inspection is scheduled so they clean up for the inspection.
How about tuning up slashdot or buying a bigger box? Clicking on a link and then playing a game of tennis taking a shower, etc etc well the page might load in that time.
Once in a while I see the screen asking for amiga dos disk with the cursor in the upper right corner. Its the type of channel that spews useless information for years, like phone numbers for the school district, etc etc.
Is your average 13 year old with a cable modem going to pay $15 to listen to a few metallica songs? No, he is going to download them in seconds instead of asking mom to drive him to the mall.
Why not try changing the laws instead of finding more ways to break them? Both sides will be happy in the long run. "what they found a way around this copyright law? well lets write another" see my point? I tried gnutella and it needs a hell of a lot of refinement. First show ping times and such like napster, and make a real connection speed indicator. I'm tired of downloading at 400bytes/sec from some guy on aol with a 14.4 modem.

Are you going the x86 route or something bigger? Personally I think you should use a few UltraSparcs, 3 linux boxes can't handle the load.

The only way to get a worthwhile project like this done is to offer money for their services, kind of like the real world.

You want source access then join the development team.
Did you buy the cpu/mobo from ebay or was this a complete system?

you might agree that patents do suck and choose to ignore them, but other companies will take advantage and you'll be screwed. Its a necessary evil.
It must be those inkblot cards they use in the crazy house. Since the first thing that comes to your mind is a dick...
Because you don't own the original rom.
Theres no better mail client for windows than outlook express? Come on. The only mail client I will ever use is Eudora.
I use audiocatalyst by Xing and it takes about 30 seconds to encode a 128k mp3. My cdrom drive rips them at 8x so another minute or two...
If you already own the cd why would you waste time looking for mp3s to download instead of ripping them yourself? Just seems a lot easier to me.

Simple you just ban the IP address, or just k-line the whole subnet like irc.
