I know certain universities that have banned public speakers because of their conservative views, while the university was far far to the left. Thats free thinking? It also comes down to money.     win95 always used to lock up when I would drag around some parts while building a VI. It was a k6 166 with 48 meg of ram. After that second lockup I installed NT and its been fine. Uptimes of many months are not uncommon. We use labview for controlling solenoid valves, taking theromcouple readings, and managing mass flow controllers. Just set the amount of run time, come back and your data is there. The win95 box in question is running some ancient 16 bit HP chemstation software. It just keeps going and going....

    do you have proof of this statement? You use good apps on good hardware with good drivers and windows is fine. The system load is not that much, only a spike when it generates a graph. Why is it so hard to believe I can get long uptimes with win95?

    In fact its running the original win95 version .950 with no extra drivers, everything straight from the cd. Too bad theres no built in uptime counter.

    Thats autorun looking for something on a cd. It checks every minute or so. Go into control panel and disable it. Its especially noticable with scsi cdroms. BTW my dual celeron 333@500 has NEVER once blue screened or crashed since it was built in september. Its locked up a few times after playing UT, but overclocking is to blame for that.

    What does opening hardware specs have to do with opening software? You want open specs to write better drivers. You want open source to leech from and build something half assed. As for stability we have win95 running on 486's that can stay up practically forever. Its all about the drivers and what software you install. The only reason they get rebooted is to hook up a zip drive and copy some files off. They do data acquisition and control all day.

We feed them and the population goes up exponentially making the problem worse.     The government keeps cutting their budget. During the 50s, 60s, and 70s they had a nearly unlimited budget, no to mention their main goal was beating the russains. We have the technology now to send a man to mars. But the government would rather blow money on things like social programs and welfare which is creating more problems than it helps. Today the government is all about managing problems, not solving them. God forbid they actually solve a problem and someone is out of a job.

    I just did a minimal install the other day and and the bare browser takes up about 6 or 7 meg. Add 4 meg for java if you choose to install that. Sure a full install with new fonts, media player, outlook and some plugins will take 50 meg. Don't spread your FUD around here.

    slashdot loads and behaves much better in IE than netscape. With netscape and threaded comments it puts you back at the top of the page, instead of where you left off. IE doesn't do that.

    does a number have to do with the quality of software? I could give a shit if they started at negative 20 and worked towards zero. What exactly is a "correct version"? Look at HP-UX, aren't they at like version 10.x now? Version numbers don't dictate what types of software I use, I use it for reasons more important than that.
