<sarcasm>Well, then you must gay too!</sarcasm>

Good grief, when I read the original post all I could say was 'huh?!'

  2. Right. on MS Office for Linux · · Score: 1

Microsoft is about making money --that's not a bad thing, most businesses are-- and porting Office to Linux isn't going to make them any money. More reasons...

    4) The installed base of Linux users aren't itching to buy Office.

    5) The people who want to run Office already have it. They're running it on Windows.

So, all this is to say that they won't sell any more copies of Office by porting it to which is why you won't see on.

If anything gets released it'll be non-commercial grade ... the result of a half-assed collaboration between spinsters and Linux lovers within Microsoft.

I call "bullshit". You'll never see an "Office for Linux" box on any store shelf.

  3. Lip Service. on MS Office for Linux · · Score: 1

    Two excellent points were made.

    1) MS benefits alluding to a possible port but not actually delivering
    2) MS isn't good at ports

Anybody who says "I can't wait!" is going to have to. If this ever happens it won't be for a long, long time.

  4. Michael Dell == Pawn. But I still like their boxes on Dell: Linux will be Option Very Soon · · Score: 1

I don't have anything special against Intel or any special desire to ruin Microsoft, but if you read the article, it's pretty clear Michael Dell is completely subservient to both these companies.

Basically, he doesn't want to offer AMD chips because it might not be good for consumers (uh...) and Intel chips are just as cheap (mmm-hmm)

Then, he doesn't want to say anything against Microsoft because he lives and dies by the "Windows rebate".

"Freedom to innovate?!" If bolting IE to an unstable OS is "innovative" we're in for some dark days.

  5. Give them @microsoft.com email addresses on Windows ID · · Score: 1

I think it's fun supply email addresses like support@micorosoft.com to registration wizards :)

Especially when there's language about "newsletters" and "product announcements"

  6. Give Bogus Info (unless there's a privacy policy) on Windows ID · · Score: 1

The ONLY time I give out correct information is when I'm presented with a privacy policy that says (something to the effect) "...we only collect aggregate data... you can't be individually identified..."

So for MP3Spy, I entered my real age and some other stuff.

  7. Be going mainstream (article on Be News) on The Be Challenge: Zero-cost BeOS for OEMs · · Score: 1

Per a recent posting on beusertalk (see http://www.benews.com/story/?ID=714) Be is planning on targeting the mainstream.

People like my girlfriend need an email client, a web browser and a word processing app. And that's it.

I think Be's got a good chance of making it in the home market--particularly among new users. Bezilla (in progress) + MailIt/Adamation/... + Globe Productive = enough features for most people.

Re: Linux vrs Be... I think Linux makes an awesome server platform, but I personally don't have the sys admin skills to use it on my desktop. Be has the stuff to gain broad market appeal in the desktop and workstation market based on its simple UI and overall speed.

  8. KINESIS! Definitely! on Ask Slashdot:Ergo Keyboards · · Score: 1

Sorry for the shouting, but I chose my nickname 'kinesis' because I like my keyboard so much.

I do a lot of heavy lifting in the gym and a lot of typing at work... the combination was hell on my wrists until I got the Kinesis Ergo Classic. It just plain rocks.

In addition to being more comfortable when programming, I also do better at net Unreal. All those keys over by my thumbs (plus the foot pedals!) let me do lots of fancy stuff.

    Definitely get the footpedals too.

The whole rig set me back ~ $300. Money well spent. Word is surgery for carpal tunell will run you several thousand dollars. The keyboard seems like a smart investment to me.

  9. K6 now? K7 later? I'm planning on a K7 in 2000 on K6-3 on Monday · · Score: 1

I've got a 300Mhz PII right now and it's pretty good except for when I play Unreal. My rule of box-buying is to wait at least two Moor cycles.

    I'd say wait.

For me, it's disappointing to buy a new machine and then not be blown away.

Interesting how Intel doesn't seem to have anything in the works to answer the K7 challenge (other than advertising dollars). Check out the chip roadmap to see what I mean.

  10. I love my foot pedal! on Pedals for your PC (but not for gaming) · · Score: 1

I've got the Kinesis Classic keyboard and their 3-button foot pedal ( that I use for ctrl-shift-mouse )

It's really great from an ergo point of view because you almost never have to "chord".

Chording is bad because you often have to stretch your hands in unnatural ways to do it. I'll recommend this keyboard and the footpad to anyone who will listen.

  11. 8 Processor Box = 1 Process Box for Q2... on QuakeII Coming to BeOS · · Score: 1

Those other 7 processors would be handling other threads. Q[1|2|3] is a single threaded app so more processors doesn't equate to more performance.

The good news for those w/ multi-processor boxes is that the other stuff your BeOS is doing while you're playing Quake isn't reduced to a crawl.

  12. Standard API == Good on Interview with Alfredo K. Kojima · · Score: 1

Application developers want to reach the largest audience possible--not just people who are running the same windown manager.

End users want to just learn how to get around in one desktop environment.

I don't see any _nix taking over the consumer market without a standard "look and feel" across its major apps.

  14. Ah yeah, typical Slashdot. on Unreal for Linux? · · Score: 1

I love playing net Unreal on my Winblows box. I'll happily shell out another $50 to play it on Linux. -AND- I'm excited about Q3A. I'll buy that too. IMHO, Epic has been very customer-focused. Admittedly, the initial release was pretty bad for net play, but they've released patch after patch and even new maps at zero cost to us.

  15. Make this be a poll! on Should Geeks Skip College? · · Score: 1

College was a waste of 3yrs for me. The best thing I took away from UIUC was my present girlfriend. Bah-humbug to CS degrees. When I interview people, education is the last thing I look at.

Let's do a poll to see how many people this a degree is necessary to succeed in the tech sector!

    I vote 'No'.
