  1. How about power efficiency? on Obsolete Hardware Piling Up · · Score: 1

Do we get the same amount of MIPs/Joules out of these old chips as the newer chips? Cluster a bunch of these together and watch your electricity bill go up... Get "a second athlon" for the price of 5 times more electricity.... are you actually doing anything good for the environment? We will need to recycle these machines sooner or later. So we might as well recycle them now, than having it sit there and use electricity inefficiently.

  2. I'll buy this on Sony's Double Density CD-RW Drive Reviewed · · Score: 1

I've been thinking of getting a new CD-R[W] drive lately, and seems like I will take a bite out of this one. It seems pretty cool. I mean, 1.3 GB on a single disc!

As for compatibility issues, I hardly ever share my CD-RW discs with anyone, I usually use it to store/backup my personal files that may change over time. And of course, if I convince my friends to buy this then there's no other problems.

I haven't checked elsewhere for all the details, but does this drive burn the new media format at 12X? For 1.3GB, this would be almost 20 minutes, which may be a little unacceptable.

With the high unreliability of the floppies we have, this just means that we will lose more data every time.

You are right that there is no social obligation. However, it is those people who voluntarily use their talents to improve the society that are the true heroes. For example, the founding fathers of US. MLK, and the likes.

The fact the India is in such a sad state and the fact that all the talents needed to make it a better country are all there, but doing nothing, makes it really really sad.

I wouldn't know they're infertile in the first place, so no, I wouldn't have a problem.
But if I see a gay couple making out, I can tell right away, they're infertile.

But the point is, most hetero-sexuals will not be infertile by their own choice, so I cannot judge them based on their infertility. However, homosexuals are infertile by choice. But I do not really have a problem with them anyway.. in fact, they're voluntarily eliminating themselves from the genepool, so I am happy.

I think they are actually not gay, but at a point in life where they need a woman. So by broadcasting they're gay, they will be able to attract more women.

  17. Re:What's unfortunate .. on Interview With Eric Allman And Kirk McKusick · · Score: 1

I disagree with your view on abortion. So what if lives are saved? What if those lives ended up being miserable little lives because someone did not want to commit a "sin"? Whats worst than having ever lived is living a miserable life because your parents had an "accident". Making a person's (your child's) life miserable is as much a sin as aborting it (at least I would consider that a sin). So you are in a lose-lose situation if you ever in that situation.

I would propose that choosing to ignore evil is a far more dangerous road than denouncing it. Had more people denounced American Settlers as evil, many Indian lives could have been saved, for instance.

More Indian lives could have been saved, but perhaps less Jewish lives could have been saved? What's your point?

  20. Re:The trouble with this. on Planning For The Colonization Of Mars · · Score: 1

You brought up a good point. It would definitely benefit more if we spend the money on Earth to improve things - cleaning up the environment, improving or replacing existing infrastructures, finding better ways to grow food w/o damaging the environment, population control, and so on... Countries like India needs to keep their populations in check, the population explosions existing there only worsens the problems they already have... poverty, food shortage, diseases, environmental damage, etc. What is the purpose of colonizing Mars? So that we can pollute it like what we're doing to this planet now?

Terraforming Mars is a gigantic endeaver... biggest ever by the human race if it ever takes place. I don't think such a large project can take place without the cooperation of all the nations in the world. And we haven't even solved that one yet. IMO, the world is not ready, even if the technology is there.
