For the new kids, we like to make things simple—after all, the kids would get alarmed: and we shouldn't want to find ourselves with that mess. I, too, am a patron of such alternatives—mostly the colon and em-dash. But syntactically, the semicolon is the most natural, since we're talking about a straight sentence fusion, and an em-dash is merely sugar for emphasis—sexy, wonderful emphasis.
You're a little off there. Mass doesn't change, no matter what gravity you measure under: although weight does, if you change the altitude you're at. The gram scales described here are dependent on the earth's gravitational field, since they aren't calibrated against a reference weight. As long as we're at or near SATP (which humans need to be, in order to breathe and mix ingredients), volume is a very reliable count of the amount of substance in question.
Anyway, this all started out as a joke about microgravity omelettes, one you're both missing and mangling.:P The real important point is that it's easy to keep and clean calibrated measuring instruments for volume, and introducing electronics into a kitchen like a precision scale, while great for geek cred, really just introduces another point of failure.
Why Slashdot posters continue to be staunchly oblivious to this, and to similar simple facts, eludes me.
There's no mystery here. That's just how it's always been done, and for very good reason: To measure a volume, all you need is a cup with a line drawn on it. Meaduring weight or mass with the same precision requires a scale. Since humans generally prepare food at SATP, these are pretty reliable metrics.
WinZip is the best-known archive extractor on the planet. It's twenty years old and was one of the first GUIs for PKZIP/PKUNZIP, if not the first. Further, it's the first hit on Google for "unzip", and the second for "zip". Finally, it's notorious for being nagware. How is it possible that you have a UID lower than mine and don't know this, or that the AC was making light of it?
You know why: because you're a newbie who hasn't heard of 7-Zip, or because it's the mid nineties and it hasn't been invented yet. What were you hoping to accomplish with your post, besides annoying people?
Yes. And also, this business model was called the "Apogee model," after a company that was most definitely not id, although the confusion is a little understandable:)
Not quite—when the article was posted, we had the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry Ministry. Standard complaints about breathtaking Slashdot editing. It was also originally "evidence of 'spectacular' attack", not "evidence of a 'spectacular attack".
But feel free to retro-nitpick as if it makes sense!
Yes. I was simplifying for the matters of convenience; you've got a fellow bibliophile here:)
Should probably correct your timescale on the effects of the computer revolution—it's been 67 years since Colossus now. 20 years is more the timeframe for the world wide web.

What are we going to do with all of these ministries? Are IT staff going to spend the weekend in a massive cleaning to remove traces of 'spectacular' redundancy, too?
Yes. But we should not let that get in the way of good trolling. For future reference, the correct response to any trolling is "Why do you feel that Python is so bad? What do you find wrong with it?"
Even if it is a viewpoint typical of Republicans, not all of the social, political, and economic conservatives who align themselves with the Republican party are antiscientific. It's true that many of them have jumped ship at this point, but not all of them have. We shouldn't generalize. Also: spewing bile like that is bad for your credibility, even when your opponent is clearly equally or more aggressive.
1. It's not as good as we are: business as usual; it's just another fancy metaprogramming tool.
2. It's way better than us: no one needs to work any more, as robots and computers take over the world! Rejoice in our status as a transitional species.
Why do you feel that Python is so bad? What do you find wrong with it?
An acceptable argument—but still, it's not tricky logic!

ADVENTURES IN GRAMMAR NAZISM: Technically it should be a semicolon after "Leo"; tell all your friends. Save the semicolon!
Well, um, webOS is Linux. Does that help?
Also, there's this thing, which you may have heard of.

Darn; I thought I already had that one.
Cleverness notwithstanding, most people don't measure ingredients inside of ovens.
I believe you—I'm just saying that the reasons for using the alternatives are painfully obvious.

Consider that you're probably not the kind of person who cares about pi anyway, and then realise you're not even the target audience.
You have clearly beaten the pants off this submission. I applaud you, sir.
Using "they" and "them" as gender-neutral singular pronouns isn't widely accepted by prescriptivist language authorities.

That depends on the universe of interest.
