Not that I give two rips about Yahoo, but I am glad to see PHP being embraced by companies that are considered "heavyweights" in the industry. It helps dispel the myth that ASP is the "industry standard" and paves the way for PHP / OS databases to be accepted or at least considered when beginning a project.
It will be nice to go to a large corporate client that is looking for an enterprise solution (what the hell does that even mean) and say something like:
"I'd reccomend using PHP and Postgres on the backend of the project, given Yahoo's recent success, I think the platform is powerful, sucure, and cost-effective."
I realize that what Yahoo does in reality is irrelevant, but executives like to hear that kind of shit. Of course that assumes Yahoo can make it all work well, time will tell.
I have a 700mhz iBook, and I absolutely love it, best machine I've ever owned, OSX runs like a dream on it. However, monitor spanning would make it that much cooler....
I'm only 21 and am not out of college yet, (I will graduate in May), but this is how I did it and here's how I'd reccomend new freshmen do it. YRMV.
Semester One: Take a light load of classes, spend most of your time meeting people and profs, developing good solid relationships that will last the rest of your college career.
Semester Two: Take a slightly heavier load of classes and perhaps join a group or organization that won't suck all your time up, but that helps you develop more good relationships. Here's the biggie for Semester Two: FIND A PROF THAT YOU LIKE A LOT AND LATCH ONTO HIM/HER!!!! This is the best advice I can give, offer to help them with projects and stuff, you'll learn a ton and make invaluable contacts.
Semester Three: Keep takes classes and somehow aquire the balls to ask that girl out that keeps staring at you in your mandatory Ethnics Studies class.
Semester Four: Keep takes classes and start looking a CO-OP or intership positions for the next semester.
Semesters Five and Six: Do a full year of interships at a cool company that will give you some autonomy to do cool projects, real world experience is so helpful. Not only for the work experience, but in learning about how insurance works, taxes, retirement, and all that "real world" stuff.
Semester Seven: Now your are done with your co-ops, start your own company! Yes, just a little one, I started cloudcitydigital.com when I was in school and it's been awesome. Keep taking classes and incorporate your classwork into your business where possible.
Semesters Eight - Graduation: Keep building your little company and using indpendant studies to satisfy both client and work projects! Kill two birds with one stone! Then graduate, throw a party, marry that chick from ETHN 101 and join the real world!!!!
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!
Also, drinking is overrated. As is studying. Have fun and use the resources available to you at school to LEARN. You are there to LEARN, not to get good grades!!!!
I was gonna go for the first post, but I decided against it in favor of posting something half-way intelligent.
In my opinion, OSX is hands down the best OS for someone who does not mind spending money on an operating system and possibly a good amount more on hardware... Software is not really an issue, there are plenty of freeware packages native to OSX, and if you don't like them, run a window manager and your favorite *NIX apps...
I think Microsoft recognizes OSX as a superior OS compared with the likes of XP and will do just about anything to either discredit Apple, or claim that somehow they are responsible for it being so great. I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve... Can really picture this happening?:
Tincan Billy: Hey, you know OSX, the OS from Apple that people are so excited about?
Fishbone Willy: Yeah, what about it?
Tincan Billy: Well, it turns out that Microsoft has got this thing code-named Corona....
Fishbone Willy: Like the beer?
Tincan Billy:I'm not sure, but whatever it is, I'm going to stop using OSX right away!!!
Remember all the fuss about that company from Norway called FAST Search and Transfer? I worked for a company that licsenced their technology and built what was supposed to be a competitor to Google (riiiiiiighhttttt....) it sucks now becuase they've put all kinds of ads up, but the engine itself is quite good. Anyway, if you highlight the two empty cells on the help page at http://allthesites.com/searchhelp.htm you'll see my initials. Not a big deal, but at one point we were getting serveral million hits a week, so it's pretty mainstream.
My domain name was set to expire in Sept., fine I thought, I let it expire and then renew with godaddy.com (50 for ten years or something). anyway, the expiration date came and went, and I called verisign to make sure it was going to expire, they told me that the domain name does not expire on the day they said it would, but that rather it gets added to a list of sites that get deleted every few months or so! that pisses me off, i want to re-register now, but I don't have control of my own domain!

why is that spyder owners always talks shit about '98, but when I meet them on the field i never get a chance to put a few in their chest? i'll tell you why, they are always back at the rest area trying to figure out why their gun won't shoot. my '98 has jammed maybe once after 2 cases of paint, i don't think i'v even see a spyder go one game without jamming.
buy a tipmann '98, a lapco bigshot, and if you play in the cold, an expansion chamber. you'll be having a blast while the guys with the fancy sypders and angels are stripping and rebuilding their guns.
Ok, now is that kind with the three spikes on their heads or is the kind with the really long tails that can swim? Either way I'd love to have been able to seen one of those things face to face.
I didn't think i'd need the sarcasm tags but I should have used them. Yes, I'm kidding, I think people missed the whole point of my post, WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT!!!!
Let me get this straight, people are complaining that the Government wants to destroy Government documents. I mean, come on foks, these belong to the Government!!! Who are YOU to say what the Government does!!!! If you wanted to burn your tax records, nobody's gonna stop you, why should it be any different for the Government!?!?!?! Poor Government, they should have a live concert to raise money for it.
Even as a hardcore Mac user (start up the flamethrowers), I have always been sympathetic to the open source cause and been interested in the dev. of Linux. However, without and old PC to muck around with, I'd never had the chance to try it out for myself. Along comes YLD, and now I'm able to install Linux on my old Power Computing (apple clone) machine. There were a few hiccups, but due to all the great Linux resources on the web, I figured them out and now I have my very own Linux box! Anyway, YDL gives mac users that WANT to get more techincal a chance to and provides the Linux community with good exposure, and that's always a good thing!!!
On my 2001 iBook (with DVD drive) I am able to do the following (among other things of course):
1. Capture DV footage, edit it, and output it right back out onto a camera (or play it to a tv).
2. Run Apache, PHP4, and mySQL flawlessly together and then replicate my work onto my "real, live" server on the web.
3. Watch DVD's with no stuttering or slowdowns while working in the shell, editing code in BBEdit, listening to iTunes, and stress-testing the above Apache setup.
Make no mistake, OSX still has a way to go, but give it a year and it will be the propriatary OS to beat!!!!!
The future of gaming should be.... fun games...

I know people have said it before, but graphics and framerates only provide enchancement for a fun game. The gameplay is still the most important factor in a game being fun. Anyone else play Rampart (Arcade or SNES), I think it's probably my favorite game of all time, but the graphics suck...
...to destroy rewritable CD's only. Hmmm, sounds like a decent made-for-TV movie!
Record Company:
"Don't worry, your $25 triple-locked, biometrically secured Britney Spears disc probably won't be effected at all! And if it does, just buy another one!"
I'm thrilled, Apple is at the forefront of innovation and the future of computing has never looked so interesting or empowering. I've always been an Apple freak, today I not ashamed of that. OSX looks to be the OS to beat this upcoming decade in terms of stability AND ease of use. And for multimedia NOBODY comes close to Apple these days. They may have problems, but they see the future and are paving a road towards REAL convergence between camera, home theater, MP3 players and the like. Steve even referenced Linux users and the Open Source movement in a positive way today, you won't hear the Borg do that! It feels like 1984 all over again.

(And don't get me started on the titanium powerbook. If you don't have the money, don't even look at them, you'll go rob a bank or something illegal (but understandable).
ATA drives (even spinning at 5400) are fast enough. One of the biggest mistakes I see by people diving into DV is that think that have to spend the big bucks on SCSI drives, when a $300 37.5 gig IBM Deskstar will work perfectly. Via ATA!!! Via Final Cut Pro!!! Via la revolution!!!
Final Cut Pro 1.2 on an Apple G4 cannot be beat for the price and quality. I've seen and used just about every PC DV editing system, and they are a joke compared to an Apple set-up. George Lucas cronie, Rick McCallum, recently said in an interview that Final Cut Pro has 60% of the editing and effects power as the $350,000 Avid machines that they used to make Star Wars -Episode One. If you need professional video editing on a budget, FCP is the only way to go. If you have any questions about FCP or DV feel free to post them, I'll see what I can dig up for you. Also check these links out, http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/ http://www.2-pop.com/ This one is fantastic, you will find everything and anything you want to know about FCP and DV here, really a great little community.
