1. To me it seems the vast funding and research on climate change happens in Europe. And we are talking here about putting pressure on USA to do something about it, USA being the most polluting country in the world at the moment while refusing to sign the Kyoto agreement.
2. The climate has not been studied long enough or with enough precision to predict with much confidence what is going to happen in the medium to long term. It is impossible to quantify how much of which items humans are doing that will effect change and what direction that change takes.
Climate has been studied to the best that we are able at the moment, science shows it doesn't get better. You can take a chance and loose on most things - this is one where you don't get a second chance. So if there is even a doubt it is man made (studies show it is), we better try to do something about it. Now!
3. This time over it has been studied a lot more and using better technology. UN climate study report that just came out says it is sure climate change is caused by man. I live in Finland, the report predicted a tempeture change of 1.5 - 9 deg celsius within next 100 years. Up to 9 degrees in worst case!! That is *really* worisome. Unlike many others maybe, I prefer snowy winters, thank you.
In adition, if worst come true, should Exxon be sued on aiding mass extiction in 100 years?
In a way this really feels to me like a certain company's "Get the facts".. Paying big buck for a study that shows one webserver/OS being more efficient than the other, while not having equal grounds (cluster vs. mainframe (hint: cluster good for webservers)).
In short, it smells like paid studies to spread FUD. Or perhaps on this particular subject anti-FUD would almost be more appropriate.
It is, but it's hard to boycott something that most people don't have a clear understanding of. You mean like when somebody want me to fix their computer and I ask "What kind of computer is it, hardware, Dell?" and get an answer that it is a XP computer with 150Gb RAM..
To me it seems they know what the problem is quite well and they are getting closer to solve it. The problem is that you (consumer) can buy a (HD-)DVD or CD and transfer it to your ipod/phone/something instead of buying it *again* in a different format. *That* is the point of DRM, it never was about piracy, blaming piracy just sounds so much more legimate/better with the media.
As I said in an earlier post, consumer protection agencys in Finland, Sweden, Norway and France has awakened to the problem of not being to choose your device/shop freely and has banded, it seems. They are not only going after Apple/iTunes, but it seems since most know iTunes by name, the media has lifted just that service up in the headlights.
Heard on radio in Finland. Only Norway has so far gone to the length of outlawing any service. Negotiations are still ongoing CPAs and Apple & co.
I'm from Finland, the other day I heard on the radio that Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Frensh (did they say Germany too?) consumer protection agencies (govermental) has more or less banded together and started to push Apple/iTunes, since they are the biggest player, but also *others* to clear out this lock-in/DRM mess.
So what I can tell, Norway was just the first to go this far. Also, iTunes is being mostly reported since they are by far the biggest. It does concern others than Apple also (for example maybe Zunes own format - never seen it sold here though).
Don't know what age they are targeting, but from the text on the comics (swedish), I'd say it is not kids.. I mean, who would think of kids with comics like: a) "there is no authentic windows sticker on my computer! I cannot get support from MS! waaa" or b) "Red: Have you installed the OS yourself? Black: Yupp, I used our volume-licensing program. Red: Volume-licensing only allows upgrades. Black: Oh No! What should I do!!"
This really doesn't sound as targeting kids, now do it?
Seems to me it is just MS "dumbing down" the message.. Already feel Windows itself is degrading me with all its "help" - now the adverts too?
I think the/. crowd would like to see parents spend time with their kids and teach them the do's and don'ts on the net, instead of just installing some "protecting" software and be done with it (or sue the software company when it doesn't work).
I really comes down to doing some effort as a parent to bring up ones kids instead of relying on a 3rd party.
This might be because Ericssons mobile phone division (at least) wasn't going too well and was sold to Sony, hence Sony Ericsson. Maybe this Suominen is a PS2/3 fan?;)
Which just so happens to operate within local laws and RIAA could even get a cut. Only that their greed is too much and their cut isn't enough in their opinion. So they rather not even ask for their share, but sue instead.
As the is just one of the jobs foreign keys are there to prevent, you A) didn't use foreign keys, B) did not know how to use them (as in "ignore") or C) used a database that has shoddy support of foreign key (depending on "backend" w/o returning errors) like MySQL.
It is more like that you have to pay a fee which allows you to drive free of charge on the I-roads in USA but you happend to live in France and have no intention of taking the car overseas (but still have to pay).
So I shouldn't be sentenced if I kill you? I mean, it is the survival of the fittest according to your train of thought?
This wasn't just "sometimes stuff dies", it was for different (artificial) reasons, most of them know by us and caused by us. It could not have happend overnight either.. Why did noone react in time to do something about it when there was still time?
And the article is inaccurate as far as not mentioning that cable can be analog or digital. Amongst these scandinavian counrties that is planning to kill analog in 2007 is Finland (31.8.2007) and that goes both for terrestial and cable analog. Welcome DVB-T (terrestial), DVB-C (cable) and DVB-S (satellite).
Despite being a bit of a geek and tech person I'm not one bit interested in the switch (I see no benefit while being a cable user).
Maybe I'm too old, but I can't quite understand all the people jumping to conclusions and screaming Blasphemy!
I'm an (Open)Suse user myself and been for a lot of years, I still do not see one reason to change distribution. That is, until something bad maybe happens. As of now everything is just speculation.
The OpenXML plugin is hardly a fork, none less than say custom kernel patches that every distro seem to have, for one reason or other. The source is open, so what is the problem?
Regarding patents - Novell (or someone for there) said themselves that this covenant (sp?) absolutely does not mean that they can start to use MS patent-encumbered stuff (Sorry, couldn't find link with a quick google).
If people so strongly disagree to adding OpenXML support to OO.o, shouldn't these same people also demand Word Doc format compability to be removed from OO.o, if for no other reason, to be consistent? Doc format is what have helped OO.o get in to at least some office use and if "technology" changes and "evolves" like OpenXML*, I see no way for OO.o to stay relevant other than also offering support.
Things would perhaps be different if OO.o already had half of the marketshare, but as it is I doubt it even has 5%.
*) No, I do not consider fileformats technology, not changing them neccerly "evolving".
You need to have browser & media "chain" in 32bit.. - No 64bit Flash player (I recommend the new Flash 9 beta, btw.) - W32Codes needs 32bit mplayer (or other player) - will not play nicely with 64bit.
Unfortunatly it seems the it is the proprietary software that is seriously lacking in 64bit support.
The worst problem with mines, especially anti-personel mines, is when they are deployed by (minimally skilled) troops that A) don't mark them well on a map/at all, B) looses track of them. C) after the crises ends does (the country really) not try to remove them..
It is still to this day dangerous to move in for example Kamboza and some other places. This is why there are treaties that ban antipersonel-mines like Ottawa Convention (http://www.landmines.org.uk/7).
You mean, like, to prevent companies saying "See we are faster" when comparing webservers, competition having 1 mainframe and the other having a cluster of boxes? Get the facts!
At the risk of being modded a troll I get the eerie feeling the US is starting to approach a state where election-monitoring by a foreign (UN?) body would be needed.
I know US is too proud for this to ever happening though.
You can take a chance and loose on most things - this is one where you don't get a second chance. So if there is even a doubt it is man made (studies show it is), we better try to do something about it. Now!

Yeah..
They're getting close...
Will Verizon's next phone be called G'sPot?

I opt for number 3 - shoot the bear.

Or (at least in postgres) you can do it quick and clean with a "foreign key on delete cascade" - parent *and* kids are gone.

The romans perfected concrete by adding volcanic ash/sand, making it much harder.
So the skill was not lost or just in egypt.
This roman concrete is taken as one of the reasons for the romans success (in some documentaries at least).

Is it just me that "MS eco-system" statements scare? I mean, isn't usually ecosystems very diverse?
