  2. Explicit content does not make art on Censored Video Game Content Stifles Artistry · · Score: 1

While sex and violence are a part of many art pieces, they are not part of all of them, and I would venture to say not part of most of them. The purpose of contemporary conceptual art is to make people feel a certain way or explore new ideas, not about being edgy. I do not usually like Art that has the sole purpose of being edgy. Artists who take the time to create something that makes the viewer feel or think something meaningful is better by far than art that simply shocks the viewer.

Also, saying that video game censorship is impeding them from becoming art is like saying that the movie rating system is keeping hollywood movies from becoming art. The very idea that these huge commercial video games would ever become art is just plain silly. On the other hand, there are more venues to distribute indipendent video games then there ever have been and some of these games are becoming more artistic. I haven't played one that I would consider high art yet, but I have played some very creative games that are moving in that direction.

  4. Engineers use Numerical Methods, not OOP on Should Undergraduates Be Taught Fortran? · · Score: 2, Interesting

It doesn't matter what language Engineers and physicists learn as undergrads, the language isn't what matters. It's the numerical methods that matter.

In fact, I think it's good that they learn FORTRAN because so much of the code they'll work with in industry is written in FORTRAN.

In my first programming class we spent the vast majority of the time learning numerical methods like taylor expansions and how to write them. In the very last few lectures we talked about what OOP did one homework assignment where we wrote and used a class. This was the right way to go because for an engineer, because the mathematics are far more important than the structure.

I've seen aerodynamic, structural, and acoustic calculations where the mathematics make your head spin, but it only takes two or three functions to write the numerical method to solve the equations. This is the kind of program engineers need to be good at.

With something like the breathalyze, it probably involves complex engineering calculations, so the code is probably written by an engineer with limited programming ability. I would expect trial and error, patchy code to come form calculations based on empirical data.

it's probably just like all the other FORTRAN codes out there written by engineers that are ugly, but give us right answers day in and day out.

Neither OO nor MS Word has very good formatting or very good collaboration. Sharepoint workgroups are OK, but not as good as Google docs.

99% of the documents I write are little spreadsheets and memo's, which work great in Google Apps.

If you need a serious document with good formatting, collaboration and security, use LaTeX and CVS.

  10. Re:Definitely would help image on Fuel-Cell Car Racing Series Aims To Spur Green Motoring · · Score: 1

Fuel Cells are a good idea, but like jonny said, a few Karts aren't going to give them a racing image. Not only will it not help their image, this competition won't help the technology. Take a look at the rules, this was a student competition and not really for mechanical enginers who design race cars. They had to use Karts (off the shelf parts) and they had to use a pre-selected fuel cell system. Basically, they bought a bunch of off the shelf parts, bolted them together, and drove them around a very short track. If you want to look at a student race series that has at least some potential to improve the image of alternative technologies and advance those technologies, take a look at Formula SAE Hybrid. It's a new competition where the cars aren't very fast yet, but the competition has rules based on an open wheeled race class like F1, the student engineers can use a wide variety of technologies, and it's a branch off of Formula SAE, which supples many of the entry level race engineers, so there's at least a chance the students could end up in the real world racing industry.
