I think it's also a good time for you - the reader/user to post what do you want to be changed in KDE? what do u hate about KDE? what do you like? What do you think should be improved? What do you think should be removed? most of the KDE developers read slashdot - so maybe your request will be fullfilled - you never know...
What we at our company are almost YELLING about at some places... we're all used to OpenSTEP and some of us are still using it just because of the Terminal.app. When you have some process or script that outputs tons of stuff, you just press Ctrl+F, you get a find panel, you enter your search keyword and it moves the terminal buffer to the right place and highlights what you've searched for. I think OS X has something simmiliar. If such functionallity would be added to KDE, there'll be no reasons for us to keep OpenStep anymore, expect for sentimentallity.:) Such feature greatly simplifies the daily job of the sysadmin.
Duh, if something, Helios is _the_ right way. Now think of it, the next day you'll sit in your car and drive to your job. And in the process you'll burn more fuel and pollute more air than Helios ever did. Call me eko-freak or something, but i'm not buying a car until it is not powered by electricity generated in a clean way, either by sun or the wind. Even if this means that i wont have a car in my current life.
Really, i gave a try to this new qnx toy and indeed i was impressed. As i was impressed with BeOS when it came out free. Both make easier to install and configure and simpler to use desktops than Linux does, but i didn't have time to try any of them in some server role. Both also have superiour multimedia capabilities than linux has, ie. i cant even get the sound to play smoothly under linux with medium loaded old pentium box, not to mention mpeg1 movies (which run smooth on win 486). Oh yes, there's another player coming to the field of multimedia unices, OS X. Don't know if it's realtime, probably not, but it wants to be strong here too. So maybe i'd add a OS X in the title too.
wouldnt you know, but i still have somewhere a cd full of.fif files, unable to see / use them anywhere. these fifs sure were nice, but are now nowhere to be seen.
MY opinion:
I never liked TV because it was supposed to be funny, entertainig and such. I never wathced TV because of these reasons. What I watched was mainly Discovery Channel and such. And then I discovered some anime masterpieces. Reason that I like anime is, that most of the masterpieces require certain level of IQ from the audience. Yes, most of anime is known by excelent humor, but I perfer the philosophical part of it. Like, majority of non computer enlighted people just get bored watching Lain... and some people even get bored watching GitS... but these people enjoy Matrix very much. Well, I can't really blame them... But i enjoy the way Miyazaki explores ecology and human vs. nature issues in his works like Mononoke Hime and Nausicaa (btw, manga is thousand times better than movie!(even if that means taking notes on every couple of pages is a must:)) and how the future of Internet and AI is presented in Gits and Lain. Oh yes, one more thing i like about anime is depth and liveliness of characters.
sure, EX really is one of the most known anime magazines on the net, but on the other side, i still haven't received their archive CDs i ordered (and payed) over six months ago. go figure.
really, just take some similliary developed video codec, or mpeg2 if there is none, and combine it with ogg. cant see why it wouldnt work... any volunteers?:)
Why would anyone want to use Opera if Mozilla is available?
Because there are some people who don't have 256Mb ram to spend on Mozilla thingie. Really, i use Opera day to day on a 486/66 with 16Mb ram and it works fast enough, even with 5-10 pages open. Now try that with Mozilla thingie.:)
Yes, i've been playing with this gizmo under DOS. I was amazed to discover that you CAN set up the whole internet thingie under such a lowly system as DOS, and check that, with TCP stack ported from BSD:) Absolutely lovely.<br>But, at the time of this playing (couple of months ago), Arachne was a bit slow, buggy at many places and a bit unreliable. The most annoying feature was the 60Hz refresh rate on my 120Hz capable monitor, but so is with the graphics under DOS. <br>Have to check what all Linux version offers, but if such problems are going to be sorted out, it could be the killer app I wait for:) Many speed issues could be solved with multitaskig linux offers but dos doesn't. <br>Oh yes, not to forgot, this Michael Polak guy is really a productive machine ^^
I happen to know that the largest newspaper company in our country runs NeXT boxen. They chose them when they computerized their workplaces, probably because of user-friendliness and powerful hardware at the time. Now they are thinking about moving to linux, which means 300+ linux workstations running staroffice and some of their in-house software. I know that because i'm trying to get some of those nice black NeXT boxen when they'll throw them out... It's a piece of history.
Altough rarely mentioned here, I suggest BASTARD! to all of you who are into FRP & RPG stuff. There are only 6 episodes out by now on tapes, but manga is already at #21. All fans hope that the animated version will follow. Really, incredible stuff.
Well, if you want to write a review for/., please do it:) I'd like to see the responses from the public. And don't forget to start with www.cjas.org/~leng/lain.htm:)
So, lets see... well, Serial Experiments Lain is without doubt the "essential stuff" for a computer nerd. Not only will it leave your jaw on the floor, it will also nicely overload your senses.:) Yep, no drugs required to reach that state:) In combination with Ghost in the Shell, you clearly see what The Matrix was made of. Then, if you are into some neat mech action, full of symbolism & stuff, with a suprising end, try Neon Genesis Evangelion, an all time classic. For some less techy stuff, try some of Miyazaki's work, like recent Mononoke Hime or a bit older (but better imho), Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa.
Sure, the Anime universe is soooo vaaaast it can'b be consumed in a year... So dig into sites like Anipike to get the idea of the size of this universe:) Oh yes, you mentioned DVDs... Check daily Animeondvd to be informed of the latest DVD releases.
I used to use w3m. It has a compile option to use openssl libs so it can run https. Still very under development, but renders tables in textmode nicely. A week or so ago openbsd team introduced https support in lynx browser. Not sure about ports to linux... anyone?
Aaarrgh! Who will make me Flight Unlimited IV ? Geez, i'm emotionally attached to these FU flight sims. Is there even the sligtest option to get us the sources or at least the maps? I would like to fly in Linux too.
Indeed, i guess that DivX is the next big thing after mp3s. With more and more people being able to use broadband access... After the RIAA, there comes the Holywood&co:)
Then what would be next? Some streaming video action?
I thought that art is something artist creates for himself and lets others enjoy it with him. I dont consider something that is made to please masses being art. Better call it a product. Now it is not so difficult to develop a way of selling this product. And a hint: vinyl LP sounds much better than CD and is not so straightforward to rip, so why not go back to releasing albums on LPs?
Dont get me wrong, but am I the only one realizing that opensource is missing an open video streaming format? PNG is great, MNG will be there soon, but these are just to replace ageing jpg/gif stuff... What about some open alternatives to rm/avi/mpg/qt? Any of these? I belive the problem lies in complexity of these and the knowledge to develop them... I mean, average Johnny the hacker can and will master his linux box in a couple of months, but usually can't master all the math necessary to develop some video codec... Or i'm missing something? Short term solution could be that one of the companies releases their format to the public, we grab it, polish it where necessary, and develop all kind of players & stuff for it... This could be done quickly... But to develop whole thing from the ground up will take too many time, even with the resources opensource community has...
is this lineo's tcp/ip stack for dos free? i'd die to see dos do some tcp/ip. any other options? also it looks like there are no DOS binaries at the boa site handy. does the code compile cleanly on DOS?
There are some win proggies that claim to rip the dvds. I didnt try them myself, but can be found on places like dvd.da.ru. Why is no one after these? Have these oficialy licensed dvd playback technology and just added the rip capability? So Jon, do you feel that the industry is after you just because you made your findings and source freely available on the net?

Actually, the prototype, called Pathfinder, was about half the size. But i dont belive you could make it much smaller.
Afaik it does all this. It's described in netfilter howto (http://netfilter.kernelnotes.org/unreliable-guide s/).
Now all i want is cish & zebra supporting iptables. Really ...
Bah, what is the lynx for? Popup window? What's that? Surely nevere had any problems with banners ... the net just flies in text.
