They grant the injunction that would only hurt iCrave TV business in the short and long run. Not granting it for the time being will have no effect on the heavy weight industries at all, so naturally it shouldn't be granted until they actually trial the case. This just another prove that decision is made not on whether granting the injunction have inrepairable damage, but on who has more money and power to lobby. They use the same argument to put the injunction on CSS code, but they did the exact opposite here.
I love SC2, but that was a while ago. They don't generate the star map on the fly, do they? If they do, it would have much better replay value. I enjoy the melee game after finishing off the campaign. When poted, it should support internet multiplayer melee game:) Yeah, that would be nice.
For those who don't know, it is a program that allows people to connect and chat while playing on line game. The program was created by a group of students in Canada (www.shadowfactor.com) and was about to be ported to Linux when that software giant bought them out. The motivation for this bought out is said that they are interested to put this functionality in DX 8.0
How about we start a GPL program to do this? We have a GPL code "freespeech" to start with, which already does most of the network code. What is needed a client/server base to allow more than 2 to connect and a speech detector to allow auto turning on of the mic when we talk. We can add compression to reduce the bandwidth, probably simple 16bit ADPCM can do.
In fact they are very bias against us and for the industry that they are part of. Most of them are own by members of the MPAA that is doing the sueing anyway. This is so frustrating....
Notice the name Cuban-nee, Octa-nitro-Cuban-nee? Even the name of the chemist is from two Chinese communist leaders too. I remember there was one similar jokes about a molecule being discovered around administrations, government offices, etc., that can slow down chemical activities. That joke is on why things around these places just work slower than any other places. This one I'm not sure what the joke is, could be a little racial...
last i looked there was a "Use fdisk" button in the install...as well as the old X staple, ctrl-alt-f2
Oh I was just whining because they took away that fdisk button in the text install. The ctrl-alt-f2 still switch to bash, both for text and X install:c}
Linux is quite complex and to simplify the installation too much would deprive people to use it for more complex setup. An example is RedHat 6.1 compared to 6.0, to make it more "easy" to install and less chance of going wrong, users are prevented from running fdisk during installation. (RH are you listening? Put it back...)
Simpler installation attracts people like the "newbie" who want to try things, but it frustrates more experience users. There cannot be a one size fit all distribution, Corel tries to address the naive user market, RedHat tries to address moderate to experience user, etc. If he has installed Corel instead, he don't even have to deal with/dev stuff.
May be I'm too naive about these things, but they couldn't be all that bad.... I guess it is possible to get mixed up with the wrong group of people in movie business too. Just like mixing with the wrong kind of friends, or bad bosses. But the original poster complains that the CD is too expensive, and you correctly pointed out that in some situation may be they didn't charge enough still. But we do have to support our favorite artists, it is not their faults.
After that darn dvd ruling.... ok, ok, enough of that...:P
I actually learned about this a few months ago when this was brought up on TV (Discovery Channel I think). This is going to be wild because from I know, scent plays a big part in sex and love making. I can just see it, all the porn site starts including scents beside pictures, oh lord...
Do you know that remote touch is also discussed? Haven't seen any beta on that yet:c)
You cannot just quantify the cost of making the CD. There are many intangible cost involved, artist's share of each CD sold, music company contract with artist, cost for advertisement, cost of shipping, cost of building and maintaining distribution channels, good will donation to charity, and many many more... Artist normal only get a dollar for each CD sold, $2 for cost of CD making, $2 for shipping (in volume) and stocking in store, $1 for maintain shop and sales person, $1 profit for store,....
So CD can cost from $10 to $16, some want to earn more profit, some little less. The work so hard to get it done, we should pay if we support the artist. Everybody get a share of the pie, that's why killing a simple product affects more people than most think.
Funny that we have the same idea (see my post just after yours), but I am thinking that we need to describe it, understand its in and out so that we can re-write a gnucss from scratch. Perhaps this is a little too strong?
Since we are allow to discuss the algorithm, draw charts and picture, formulas, and so on. If we can make it clear enough that we can re-write another copy of css descrambler and GPL it. RMS would probably agree a gnucss program would be in order. Such a program will be protected GPL freedom of distribution law.
This is not that far fetch and could be done in little time if the design is clearly defined and the formula is given. Remember only DeCSS program distribution is granted the injunction. It means that it is still legal to keep a copy for yourself and study it, discuss it, describe it, teach it on online discussions. Correct me if I interpret this wrongly. BTW, I don't live in the States.
No kidding, I thought that is important too. But I'm not sure why using postscript as an API is a problem, unless they are talking much lower interfaces. My printer is using the ghostscript as an filter so that I can pring postscript files. Sometimes doing another API is like re-inventing the wheels, hope this is not the case.
These drivers, if not GPL, are usually unstable and becomes obsolete in the long run. The Linux kernel is a dynamic entities and if they decided to drop the support 6 months or a year down the road, you will have a dead soundcard. I much rather go with GPL supported sound card, any day.
Yeah, most embedded OS doesn't do VM. Probably mostly due to the limitation of processors not supporting VM implementation. To write an OS that do VM on these processors can be very hard as you have mention. I think the old Mac processor cannot generate page fault exception or address remapping, so we can't blame those old Mac not doing VM:)
I'm not sure there are many new things discussed there, we seen it in e.g. OS/2. Whether they describe it as VM or private memory space, I don't see much difference here, e.g., in Linux, processes has their own memory space and cannot interfere with other processes. I think in a unix like operating system, VM design has no real advantage over processes.
From the way the rebuttal is being stated, they not only belittled the Plantifs and the Judge, but also seems to indicate that the Judge has made critical error in judging the case. I am not sure what are they trying to do, the decision was reached after months of deliberation. And now they are trying to discredit the Judge for making, what is in their opinion, a stupid decision based on the past cases.
They are saying, "the Judge didn't know the law or he won't be judging the case the way he did. Lets educate the Judge with some history lessons to see if this would enlighten the Judge to reverse his decision." This is plain stupid, they are way over their head again.
In the name of ease of use, they create a software that clueless people can install. And they also created a certifying program to allow clueless people to pass.
This appears to be their plan all along... dump down the customer so that they have no alternative but to stay with them. Therefore, it is wrong for the article not to put part of the blame on their partner company.
Note that the quote below shows that they can win only if the CSS decoder "has very limited commercially significant purpose or use other than to circumvent a technological measure..." So if Linux DVD player is important enough, they will allow CSS code to continue to be free distributed. 27. The Copyright Act, Title 17 U.S.C. Section 1201(a)(2), provides that:
[n]o person shall manufacture, import, offer to the public, provide, or otherwise traffic in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof, that -
(A) is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title;
(B) has only limited commercially significant purpose or use other than to circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title; or
(C) is marketed by that person or another acting in concert with that person with that person?s knowledge for use in circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.
Today's microprocessors are inflexible either with hardwire or through microcode, so they can be so called Hardware driven. Software has to work with what even crap the hardware is providing, good or bad. Coming from a software point of view, if one can optimize the microcode or the equivalent of it on the fly. Being software driven, it can use the knowledge of what the user using the processor for, to adapt and optimize itself.
The low power consumption is also an essential part of a product they are developing. Lower power equal less heat, no fan require in a closed, compact device is also a big selling feature. Imagine if you can have a intel PII 550 class small hand held pad that can run application well. Drop in a wireless module for networking and you have the best toy in town that every geek would like to have one.
I know we usually put a tongue-in-chick when we see people talk about patenting stuff. But granting patent to genes may not be so outrages as you might think. Think about a situation in the future where we can alter genes in unborn child to make them smarter, stronger, prettier, taller... The company who engineer the gene modification should have a right to patent it. People who are willing to throw in money can have a special child created for them. And this company should have the right to the modification for some time to recover money they spent on research.
The modem block sync problem is getting worse these days. Me and my friends are playing network games with IP address 24.112 and 24.113. It is totally frustrating!! Huge about of framing errors and traffic collisions on the network. Things are getting really bad and all complains fall on dead ears.
Hopefully this UDP will give them a slap in the face and wake them up. They are stupid enough to route 192.168.0.x and many other internal IP address through the router. To make things worse, recently the amount of SPAMS in email has increased as well, some are generated using sequential email address generator, others just generated on their mail server.
So many online shopping popping up on the web these days, I'm surprise this doesn't happen more often. The technology is available for them to setup a secure transaction system, but incompetent use of it the the cause of this kind of incident.
Merchant needs to keep the credit card numbers around for a short period of time after the transaction and dispose of it when they are no longer needed. Some sites even allow you to click a check box so that you can store your number in the store so that you can login and buy stuff on-line without a credit card on hand. What buyers in the right mind would do that? But they do...
Also, why allow remote online access of the database in the first place.... There is no technological solution for stupidity, none, nada, zip...
I don't think this can happen. Filing patent is so darn expensive.
They grant the injunction that would only hurt iCrave TV business in the short and long run. The copy from the tux ftp site is perhaps incomplete. The complete download should be about 93MB.
