  1. CMU: Andrew Linux on University of Michigan Linux · · Score: 1

Thought people might like to know this. Carnegie Mellon University has its own Linux distribution called Andrew Linux. We originally started out with RH 4.2 but have gradually made changes such that it no longer resembles it. The distro has provision for necessary CMU like Kerberos, AFS, etc built it.

Guess each college will make modifications to tailor Linux to its own needs. A common distro might just be unusable as each college has its own needs and probably a setup unique to itself.

  2. SLiRP in India (and other developing countries ? ) on SLiRP Project Needs Maintainer · · Score: 3

Ummm....really don't know how many people from India read Slashdot but had a thought...

SLiRP could be used on a shell account in the USA (as far as I know Slirp does support telnet connections...though a bit fussy about it) in combination with a cheap shell account from VSNL (local ISP in India), a TCP/IP acc could be simulated. A bit slow but definitely worth the price ($10 for 500 hours..compared to a lot more for a TCP/IP )

Two things to note... A service called SenseNET used to provide something like this. Don't know if they used SLiRP/TiA or something else. Plus VSNL (and some other ISPs) do not provide clean 8 bit telnets (or I simply did not experiment enough with it). People might need to fiddle around with that.

We have static IP + DHCP...so its great!

  4. Re:Kerborized FTP : Its there on Ask Slashdot: Secure FTP? · · Score: 1

Right...I have seen Kerberos FTP at CMU ...It exists for BOTH Unix and Dos (not seen a Win version..but it must exist...and who cares ? )
Definitely lot less trouble than ssh (if kerberos is up .. that is)

  5. Linux & Kerberos on Practical Beowulf · · Score: 1

Just as a side note..Linux DOES run kerberos (case in point CMU and MIT) ... So it can be almost as secure (if not equally secure)as the SP.

  6. Its $6.99 at Cheapbytes (with shipping) on Free Red Hat 6.0 CDs · · Score: 4

Guys..check out CheapBytes The CD is only for $6.99 including UPS. SO what it cheaper ?

  7. Which World do you live in ? on India hires elephant to "stomp out piracy" · · Score: 1

Whatever gives you this idea. Try to look outside of the shell you live.. India is NOTHING like this. The Govt. is liberal and we do not need any authorization. NASSCOM (which is the Association being talked about) is a non-govt entity. So next time..find out more before you go around projecting things in a negative light.

  9. Kereberos & Linux on Ask Slashdot: Kerberos and PAM? · · Score: 1

Kereberos is also running on linux at CMU (Carnegie Mellon University for all you people who dont know :) the place where the Coda file system for linux is being developed ). So I do know that its possible to run it. However not sure how to do it. Dont know if this is of any help but at least thought should let you know.

  11. Its True on Does Open Source Fail the Acid Test? · · Score: 1

Okay..before anyone flames me..let me clarify-I love linux.

Now..I feel that with large pieces of code (esp OSS) when there is no responsibility except moral, there will be instances of bugs coming through. Also people who work for recognition will work on the more "fancier" aspects of things for which they get attention. Who wants to pay attention to the nuts & bolts and the really CORE mechanics which is dull to say the least ?? Let me know!

Just wanted to let you know. Am at Carnegie Mellon Univ which developed AFS. We are currently using it with 1 Terabyte of space just in our Univ. MIT and U of Mich (Ann Arbor) are among the other colleges that also use it.

  14. Fine..but do we need it ? on MS unveils Universal Plug and Play @ CES · · Score: 1

I was just wondering. There is a difference between how far we can push technology to do things and whether we should do it. OK. So we can get our lamp to talk to the microwave but is it going to server a useful purpose ? Are we adopting technology that we really need or are we just becoming a slave to it ?
