Their camera works from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared. One reason for using the ultraviolet is that at some point Planetary Resources is going to want to take spectra of sunlight that reflects off an asteroid in order to get detailed information about the composition of the asteroid. Having access to the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum will be a big help for this. I am impressed with what I have seen of the ARKYD telescopes. Assuming that the specs on their Web site are correct (and why wouldn't they be?) Planetary Resources is building instruments that will be quite capable of doing remote prospecting, and of doing some decent astrophysical observations as well.

The other reason that the BC Liberal (nee Social Credit) Party won is that the NDP ran an incompetent campaign. The NDP assumed that the election was going to be a coronation and did not do enough to get out their voters, or to convince British Columbians that they really did have a better plan for the future of the province. Add to that the BC NDP's history of betraying their supporters (such as during the Vancouver bus strike, and their various environmental flip-flops over the years) and they went down in flames.

  5. Re:And no one was surprised... on The Canadian Government's War On Science · · Score: 1

To make things worse, the Liberal Party was decimated (more like nonagintaeted) in the most recent election, and then went on to pick a playboy (who is the son of one of Canada's most polarizing Prime Ministers) as their new leader. They do not have a hope of winning the next election. At present the only significant opposition party is the New Democratic Party, but their charismatic leader died right after the last election, and their new leader, while competent, is rather boring and hardly the sort of person who is going to inspire Canadians to elect their first ever federal NDP government. Since there is currently no strong opposition party, and it may take several years for the Liberals to rebuild, it is quite possible that the Conservatives will be in power until sometime in the 2020s.

Almost all of the applications that I have looked at seem to be from people with no useful skills (at least not ones that will be useful on Mars), little interest in going to Mars beyond stock statements like "it would be awesome" or "I want to be an astronaut", and very little skill in promoting themselves. The number of spelling errors in applicants from people in English-speaking countries is astounding. The quality of many of the videos is dismal. If these people really want to survive on Mars they need to demonstrate a lot more attention to detail than they did on their public applications.

I suspect that most of the people who are applying are planning to take advantage of being on a reality tv show. Everything but the last round is going to happen on Earth, so the vast majority of the applicants know that they will never make it to Mars and simply want to take advantage of whatever fame and fortune come with being on the Mars One tv show over the next few years, which could be considerable.

I agree. Driving can be fun, and I pointed out a nice highway to drive on. However, most people do not enjoy their morning commutes, or darting around from shop to shop, or sitting still in bumper to bumper traffic with three miles to go until the next exit. These are common driving conditions for most people. If the only driving that I ever did was in a BMW 3 Coupe on a lightly used road in the Rockies I would be very happy, but in the real world driving is not quite that much fun.

Some people enjoy driving, but many do not, particularly the miserable drives that many people have to endure to get to and from work, or to move around in badly designed cities. Driving can be a lot of fun, particularly if you do most of your driving in areas that do not have a lot of traffic. Most of the time, though, driving is just something that you tolerate because you need to go somewhere.
