First off, I think that I actually liked this article.

Nothing scares me worse than the fear of losing freedoms. I don't mind the new restrictions at the airports, or anything like that. Those are things that I don't consider a basic right. I just don't want to have to worry about encrypting all of my email, or even about possesing a strong encryption program without a backdoor.

As far as terrorism is concerned, I think that we need to treat the sickness, not the symptoms. We need to fix our foreign policy, to help stop things like this. We need to not use violence, as it begets more violence. No more innocents or civilians need to die.

I'm all for giving Osama a fair trial, but how is that possible? How do we extradite him from Afghanstan(sp?), and if we manage to, who is going to serve on his jury? I would try to be impartial, but could I, could you?

I know this is sorta off topic, and doesn't even follow any sort of logic. I just felt like rambling.

The comment implies that the designer who did "sign off on it" had no idea what he was doing, because a plane did happen to crash into the tower and it did collapse. If I were to read your comment without reading the link, I would've thought that the designer, contractor, whoever, was either ignorant, or negligent. Neither of which was the case.

It was a side-note which implied incorrect information, which is why I felt the need to correct you, or the implication of your statement, as the case may be.

Maybe you should try to be less anxious to jump to the conclusion that everyone is a pedantic twity asshole without which slashdot would cease to exist.

It appears that the matricies that are used as keys instead of the normal RSA keys are the cause of the crack. They give too much extra info to a possible attacker.

I want to look this over better when I have more time, it's pretty interesting. God knows I didn't understand RSA that well when I was 16.

Well, I don't have the time to do a search, but I have some "unvalidated thoughts and memories" on the subject.

I think a while back IBM wanted to submitt some patches to the linux kernel that would allow it to play better with the big boys. The patches would enable scaling up to a large number of processors, and efficiently using large amounts of memory. IIRC (doubtful, someone else wanna help me out here), linus didn't want the patches b/c he cared more about linux running on a normal machine well. I hope that they'd just do something like #ifdef _BIG_IRON_. Instead, IBM just kinda backed off, they didn't want to create any sort of resentment from the community, nor did they want to fork the kernel so they could have a version with their patches. I think the willingness of the company to give, and not get upset if its gifts aren't accepted well is a great testiment to its devotion to linux.

I think insertion of those patches, even if on a #ifdef type basis would be a leap in the right direction for IBM to replace AIX with linux.

I'm not 100% sure of the facts, if someone would like to correct me, please do. Of course if someone wants to back me up with links, that'd be ok too :)

I'm thinking that they're more looking for the ability to scale to a large number of processors, and high amounts of RAM.

On that subject, does anyone know if IBM's Big Iron patches ever made it on to the main kernel tree?

How are they responsible for content on their service? I would think that the individuals sharing & d/ling would be responsible, not the service. In the case of the phone company, they're not liable if I make prank calls.

Take your pinto driving freak. If he had some religious conviction that he needed to be elevated above 4 ft. while driving in a car, then his huge tires become more than an entertainment, its something he believes very seriously in.

Now the same thing applies with some linux users. They may really like Apple hardware, but not agree with the 'closed source'ness of the Operating System. Therefore they install linux, an OS that they feel comfortable using, because it gives them their freedom.

I don't think that linux is the best solution for everything, but If I felt that Free Software was the best way, but still wanted an ibook, would you hold that against me? Even If I tried to convince you to use linux because I valued the freedoms it gives?
