Well, let's see. What's the difference between CT's opinion of Microsoft and GWB? Nothing, unless you consider that this is a technology web site, not a political one. I can stand someone's opinion of a technology, I don't read/. for a political opnion though.
Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they all stink.
I agree. I read/. because the only politics that I have to read is about privacy/technology legistlation. If I wanted to read a political evaluation of a canidate, I'd go to someone that knows something about politics, not CmdrTaco. Stick to the technology stories, leave the politics to Slate...
Yeah, we're geeks. What would distract us more: A cute booth babe presenting a product or putting the demonstration online on a brand new Apple G4 cube?
...no tradeshow floor with T-shirt giveaways and hype. OLS is all about the tech...
Isn't the T-shirts the point of the conference. That's were I get my wardrobe. If they stop giving out T-Shirts at hard-core tech shows, all the hard-core techs will be naked by next year...
Wow. I really wish Rob could specially moderate comments like this up to +6. With all of the trolls that have taken over/., I've almost forgetten why it is that I still read these comments. Thank you for reminding me...
Quite Simple. A pimp get's paid for hooking people up with hookers, who get paid for sex. A matchmaking agency is paid for hooking people up with sluts, who pay for the service too.
In your analogy, if Napster was a pimp, they'd be directing people to servers that charge for the download. That's pimping.
A matchmaking agency helps find people (and Napster helps find songs) that match the specifics you're looking for. At the same time, the people you can chose from are also using the Napster service to search for songs that they are wanting.
I get what you're saying, but then again, he didn't preface it with the little blurb you just said. With such a vague statement, it's open for (mis)interpretation and criticism.
Maybe, had I interpreted it the way you did, I wouldn't have been so harsh, but the fact still remains. JonKatz is always advocating geeks to act rather than sit on their asses (Take "Shut down Metallica, not Napster" by JK). JK is usually extremely verbose. Why doesn't he give some suggestions as to how we can help K5 or what he's doing to help?
I think we both have points here. I apologize that I may have misinterpreted his original post. If I had read it differently, I wouldn't have been so harsh, but I'd still raise the same point.
No offense Jon, but you work for/. Shouldn't it be "We will..." or even "I will...".
Of all people, I wouldn't expect you to be one to say: We should do something. If there's anything that's consistent in your articles, it's that you advocate action, even if what you don't succeed. You've always been one to stand up and do something if you believe in it. I'm pretty disappointed...
OK, I don't think that's the best idea. All of these machines being used are cracked machines. DoSing them or whatever isn't going to solve the problem because the cracker will just crack different machines.
Now, poor security shouldn't be tolerated but I'm not going to DoS someone because they were cracked. The only thing those sys admins should get is an e-mail telling them they've been owned.
I couldn't agree more. That is a good idea. The thing of it is, people think that a domain name should be theirs because they have a trademark on it somewhere. You say:
Want to prevent namespace collisions with sacred texts? corinthians.insert Brazilian league here.com.
They already have www.corithians.com.br. That should be enough. I hate companies that think that because they're really late getting into the domain name game, they can sue people or other companies that have beaten them to their name. I don't agree with cybersquatting (sitting on a domain just to sell it for a higher price), but anyone using a domain for something related to that domain name should be protected from these frivilous lawsuites.
I'm not sure if that's a poor attempt at being funny or a poor attempt at trolling, but I think you're missing the point still. The debate is whether BAIR can tell the difference between a person looking at porn and a person looking at a picture of nude art (e.g. the statue of David).
Obviously, the software can't tell the difference between them because the software just doesn't work. It effectively blocks 68% of all pictures (explicit or mundane).
I think Courtney Love said it best when she said the only people who are afraid of Napster are the ones who have one or two good songs on the album and the rest is filler. They're afraid that if their fans here the rest of their songs, they wouldn't buy the CD.
Thanks, I already knew it was reserved. It was a joke. The point is, no matter what type of convention we have, people are going to fight over who gets what address.
Yeah, and what happens when your local Little League team registers www.cardinals.team and you get the NFL and MLB teams suing them?
Face it, the only way people are not going to fight over web addresses are if we go to pure IP addresses (and then, the porn companies will still probably all fight over the 69.69.69.69, etc. addresses).
I stand corrected. Of course, I don't see that too far off. I mean, there are already video games costing upwards of $1/play. Don't think it will take to long to hit $5/play. (Actually, I've paid $5 to play some VR games when they first came out).
No, my post is more in jest because we're spending so much effort trying to regulate everything but absolutely no effort enforcing it. Maybe, the government should focus on controlling what it's already put into place before trying to regulate anything else.
New Mexico. (BTW, I guess my post makes more sense if I mention that I'm under 21). Anyways, every time my coworkers have a party, they head straight to the bar. I've gone a couple of times and never once been carded.
This is going too far. I get carded trying to buy an R-Rated movie, get carded to buy Soldier of Fortune in BC, get carded to play video games in Indiana but don't get carded when I walk into a bar. Go figure where our priorities are.
If these new "standards" (read: MS proprietary crap) catch on, that really gives the Linux community a black eye. This forces Linux users to constantly play catch-up just to be able to use the newest web technology.
If Microsoft wanted to actually create a standard, they need to release it and make it available to all operating systems and browsers. Of course, why would they do that when they can use it to maintain their monopoly?
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not heading out to buy Corel stock because they say that the worst is over. I think that if Corel wants to let everyone know that they're going to make it, they need to go out there and prove it.
Whoa, where have you been? Wine (uncapitalized) is one of the greatest tools for scoring points with your significant other (or scoring for that matter).
Sorry, I know I'm responding to a flaimbate with an off-topic, but what the hell...

Pretty original. Why can't they pick something more modern? How about names from sci-fi classics? Why not call it Spock?
