  1. Re:Really two different halves on The Canadian Who Holds the Key To the Internet · · Score: 1

Is it me, or have they missed the most obvious point? I mean even the entire slashdot seems to have missed this point.

Let's say for the moment a bomb or cyber attack does happen. And let's say for the moment they have to reboot. So off they go and the folks from the Pacific have to travel to the US... Yes the US because it appears they have to be there physically.

Does anybody REALLY think that planes will be flying after a bomb or cyber attack? Remember 9/11 folks? Three days or such no plane went into or out of North America. So how will these folks from the Pacific, or Europe travel to the US to do a reboot? Magic carpet?

My point is not that they have to travel to the US, they could travel where ever they wanted. My point is that after an attack NOTHING, NADA, ZIP is going to move in the sky without being shot down. And EVEN if it was only a cyber attack, don't you think that planes, and travel agencies use the Internet to transfer data?

Sure they could go back to plain vanilla DNS, but that then takes the "zing" out of the five people have to get together to reboot the Internet. Actually makes all of this kind of lame... And frankly after having been a techy dweeb who moved to more business seeing that again techies fell in love with the idea without actually seeing the trees...

So people am I missing anything? Maybe I am not seeing the trees?

As a mechanical engineer who studied dynamics I would say the reason is because the resistance that is normally hit due to acceleration or keeping the thing moving is not present. Thus this thing could accelerate faster than the wind.

What I would find interesting is what are they exploiting in specific? As they say, is there some neato resistance, aero-dynamic trick that nobody has yet thought of?

It reminds me of the ram jet that below a certain speed is useless. YET at higher speeds it becomes more effective than a regular jet.

Apple has the right to choose whomever they want in their app store. Apple is not holding you back from buying another phone.

Microsoft on the other hand did hold people back. They said, if you sell a PC with another OS you will get worse conditions. Apple makes no such pre-conditions. This is also why I doubt Apple will be charged with being a monopoly. They have clear terms, and do not play favoritism. Apple does not say, "hey you make a RIM app and therefore I punish you." Apple says, "I don't care if you make RIM, Android or Windows apps, but if you make an iPhone app you will use the following tools."

You might not like the conditions, but you are able to choose a competitor. But if you choose Apple then STFU because you knew what you were getting into...

At this point the parent's security is blown to bits because they need to make an exception. And how often will this kid say, "parent parent I have a "project""

The easiest way to answer this is as follows:

    1) Own the route to the Internet. That means you give or deny access to the Internet. Kids loose interest REAL quick if they can play with the Internet.

    2) Let the kids have access to the computer anytime they want. WITH the exception that you can remotely log in at any time. Install VNC server and periodically log onto the machine and see what your kids are doing. Yes it is big brother, but it also keeps people honest when they know you can log in at any time.

    3) NEVER give out the password. And that means you as the parent need remote access to the home network. Because imagine being out for the day, kid comes home and needs access to the Internet. They phone you, and unless you give them access you are going to have one angry kid. Thus make sure that you can remotely access your network, make the changes and move on...

Otherwise the rest is silly and life should be fine...

What are all of those GPL applications? Those applications rely on copyright to keep things free! If you say anybody can copy anything, what would happen is that corporations would develop more draconian DRM that would make it virtually impossible to run any application unless a specific set of conditions are met. And what we would have is corporations stealing GPL, making a few tweaks, adding DRM and selling it.

I personally like copyrights because they give me the right to restrict or ensure that there are no restrictions. And guess what most of the world and people own copyrights because copyrights are easy to get and basically automatic.

If you don't like the big corporations and their copyright then don't buy any of their stuff. Buy the stuff from small independents on the Internet.
