Larry Ellison believes in growth by acquisition. He does not do it organically and so he really does not care about Java other than he has control and is able to sell it to the enterprise. He does not care about third parties! He only cares about how Oracle can make more money. It would not surprise me if Larry is thinking of taking Java private to f**k over IBM and everybody else. Look at Oracle's head honcho Larry Ellison... A macho alpha male that MUST under all circumstances have control. The moment Ellison leaves Oracle will collapse since corporations like his do very badly with their hallowed leader.

Once you see that you see the angle of Oracle. Oracle I think really doesn't give a flying f**k and they are now starting to understand the jello nature of Open Source. By jello I mean you squeeze jello hard and all you get is ooze coming out between your fingers. I would be really surprised if Oracle caved in. I bet Ellison is thinking, "no f***g way some open source hippies are going to make me bend, me a billionaire"

If you think I am being harsh, look at Ellison when he takes "time off" like sailing! This is not a guy I would ever want to hang out with. At least with Bill Gates I could play cards...

    2) GM behaving like a startup? Excuse while I barf. GM is not behaving like a startup. They are behaving like a financial institution. Look at who is running the show? Look at how they are selling themselves to the financial community. Wait I forgot GM is a car maker!!!

    3) Only in the case of GM is there an income gap. Most other companies tend to not have such a huge gap. This is a play by GM to put on a good face that they are "clean" when in fact they are not. Look at the model lineup. They have 4 economical fuel efficient cars. YET they have 5 different Corvette models. Yeah a company that has its priorities straight.

    4) GM is not staking its future in clean technology. Look at point 3, and look at their line up. Ford is staking a part of their future on clean cars. Ford is doing the right things. GM is once again putting lipstick on a pig!

Having said all this, it is not impossible to re-engineer GM, but GM has never shown a willingness to do so. GM thinks this little happening as a blip introduced by the market and not by them. Right now GM thinks that they have done everything they and it is smooth sailing from this point on. RIGHT... WRONG! What bothers me is that Ford did real change... They did not take money from the government, and they are going to get hit again below the belt by GM. I just hope the next time GM is let to collapse.

If you really want to see behavior profiling in action take a look at "Lie To Me". Yes yes it is over dramatized (its TV after all), but in essence that is what they are doing and it is very sophisticated. What you seek is a reaction from the other person. That is why the one guy is always in other people faces. He pushes the point and gets the emotions going as most people cannot hide them.

Thus if you think behavior profiling is about keeping tabs on people you are actually really missing the point. Personal history in the context of the airport has very little to do with it.

    Let me illustrate...

GPL... What is it? It is law based on copyright! So if you are violating via piracy you are violating the GPL. Where people like you are jerks is because you will be the first ones yelling and screaming on how evil corporations are when they violate the GPL.

Well you can't have it both ways! Either you accept the copyright or you don't. Because if you don't accept copyright then you better accept the fact that vendors are completely free to take any GPL code and not share it. And let me tell you corporations can be more clever than you with respect to DRM. An example, take a look at how Bloomberg protects its IP. Absolutely stunning and very very very very difficult to crack. If you say, "hey it can be cracked..." Think again many have tried because Bloomberg is very expensive and people would love to have it for free. I actually challenge you to break into the Bloomberg system and get their terminals for free!

I for one accept the copyright and stand by the copyright. Not because I like content owners like the big studios. But because I like the rights of the open source community. I know with open source and my fair use with it, and my paying for each and every piece of binary only software I have the right to bitch and complain on dumb binary only vendors! And yes I do donate to open source. Regularly as a matter of fact.

Like you said you need a pilot when things go wrong. And there is the rub. When things go wrong you need experience. And experience costs.

What O'Leary is missing is that the calculation does not work.

Imagine you own a company of machines. You pay 100 USD for the maintenance crew and nothing goes wrong with the machines. At that point as a cost cutting CEO you think, "hey we could hire lesser maintenance and save money."

So off you go and hire a maintenance crew for 25 USD, saving 75 USD. But the problem is that the 25 USD crew sucks! And thus your machines blow up and your repairs cost you an additional 75 USD. Bringing you back to the original total. Which crew do you keep? After all its a zero sum equation and things can't go wrong all the time, right? Maybe this machine blow up was a "freak occurance".

Here is where people like O'Leary don't understand statistics. What you have done is included a drift factor. Namely your statistics are drifting to a new steady state since the original conditions, or general conditions don't hold.

I see idiots like this all the time. Actually I work in the market and it is scary how often CEO's just don't get stats, and how the entire financial advisers are stuck on the old way of calculating odds.
