  1. Isn't that what they call us? on Gnucash v1.4.0 Released · · Score: 3

Man, that's what those old money people call us entrepreneurs. They look down on us and call us gnucash. What snobs!

  2. Invitation on BT To Enforce Patent On Hyperlinking? · · Score: 2

Wow, I wonder how many people will get in on the ground floor of this revolutionary technology. I know that I'll accept the invitation. Oh, wait a minute...

  3. The impression that I got on Review: 'Titan A.E.' · · Score: 1

I got the impression that Gibson was going to be an integeral part of the development of the screenplay and directing. Am I wrong in this?

  4. Neuromancer on Review: 'Titan A.E.' · · Score: 1

It will be refreshing to see Neuromancer on the big screen. Gibson brings a very unique flavor to the genre of sci-fi, even if Case is kinda a script kiddie ;-)

On a more serious note, I hope that the movie does well, since the book is an absolute MASTERPIECE. Usually the Hollywood versions of movies SUCK, but GIBSON HIMSELF is involved with this flick, so it should be true to the text. Hopefully, it will do well enough in the box office to generate interests in his other books. I would really like to see some of the stuff in Idoru on the big screen!

To make a long story short, I haven't lost faith in modern sci-fi flicks, we just had a bad spurt the past few years, and there are still a few great sci-fi movies that came out of the 90's, I just hope that the direction goes more the way of Neuromancer and less the way of fluff.

  5. Explaination on Slackware 7.1 Beta 1 · · Score: 3

There is an explaination on the site as to the jump Here.

All of the information on what the current release includes is here, on slackware.com

You can always get all of the newest stuff by looking in the "current" directory on any slackware mirror.

Pretty much, Slackware went to 7 because Patrick was getting bugged by people who didn't realize that the numbers are just numbers, and thought that RedHat was eons ahead of Slack. Also, several major changes were made in that release, including shifting to glibc.

Slackware is very friendly to local compilation of software, if you don't like how far up to date a piece of software, just compile it yourself, also, you should always compile a customized kernel to get optimal performance from your machine with any distibution.

It is suprising that the next distro is not 8. I held off on submitting the beta as a story. The beta is actually an excellent product. It includes X4 and the newest verions of just about everything that there is to have the newest version of.

BTW, Slack is the best distro ;-)

  6. Base Install on Slackware 7.1 Beta 1 · · Score: 2

You can still run the base install from floppy disks, downloadable over the Internet, as for ordering it from floppies, I think that it is only available on CDROM at this point. The A directories are sized for distribution onto floppy disks. :-)

Ok, we need to go over this again, someone marked this post as offtopic. Signal_11 made a post saying pretty much, that since people use the x86 processor series, that it can't be obsolete, that people don't do stupid things like that. What I was saying, is that we do stupid things like that all of the time, and use a lot of things that are obsolete, so the processor could have been, and was obsolete from its conception, and still fit the requirements of something that he claims is not obsolete.

So, excuse me for thinking that it itself was 3D, it sure sounded like that to me. I'm not cracking on it. I just don't see the purpose in that. Hell, if you wanna go take over the X consortium, go for it, it doesn't bother me in the least.

Ok, my car is killing the planet. It sucks up the air. I could drive an electric car, or ride a train, and not do half as much damage. We dump out sewage into water that would otherwise be safe to drink, almost. My office runs windows, a fundamentally insecure OS... Kids shoot heroine... CFC's were banned because they destroy the ozone layer, but really, 3M spoke out against them because their patent on the chemical ran out, they engineered a new chemical, that does all of the damage the CFC's did to the ozone, with the added advantage that it will eventually kill you too and causes alzheimer's disease. None of these have any redeeming qualities, especially by comparison to their cousins... Hell, we sit and watch TV Sitcoms when we could be watching operas or something. I enjoyed La Bohemme way more than I enjoyed Perfect Strangers reruns...

Uhh, who needs a 3D GUI? No offense, but can you see any real obvious uses for it? Do you wanna read your text at a cockeyed angle for some reason? Hell, I don't even really see the use of most point and click interfaces. Why don't you write a short list of advantages to a 3D GUI, and foward it to me. Then, we could open a nice little discussion forum on the subject. That's the way to generate interest. Most people, like me, see nothing truly useful about having windows that can be mounted on a cube and spun. Personally, I don't even like to read a book that isn't held straight.

  20. RISC on Is The x86 Obsolete? · · Score: 2

x86 has always been obsolete since the RISC technology has always been ahead of it. It's just a favorite. Macs have, on a fundamental design level, faster processors. The G4's have been pulling a terraflop for a good time now. There are countless other processors that are just better than them. Their market share is just so large that they can sell them cheap, and they were smart enough to open the architecture.

You're not likely to notice the second, unless you live in between a college dorm and a college sorority, like I do (thank you God). At any rate, I'll keep the 802.11, and I'll keep the phone, since nobody really cares what I am getting on my pizza.

ZDNet seems to be relatively computer illiterate between their staff and policies. I like them, some of their people are pretty good. I would, however, have to say, that unless it's marketted by Microsoft or has never had an attack of any type even attempted on it, they really don't support it. They will say that they do, but the inner rung support from them just isn't there. It's a shame.
