I do not have a Windows computer. I do not have access to a Windows computer. I would be willing to start a group to port your PureEdge Viewer application to Linux and/or other operating systems such as Solaris (Sun).
I object to the government requiring the use of specific and costly COTS software in order to access and use a public function.
I heartily agree with the suggestion that/. readers should email the govt en masse and see if it makes any difference. A marvelous site on which to find the email addresses of your representative and your senators is http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/.
As for emailing my Congressional representatives, I will, but I'm in PA - the Santorum state.
I got a request to sign up with Nielson surveys but could not because they require Windows and I don't do Windows. I'm not sure if they also require IE. So, you have a group selected on the basis of running Windows and being willing to download and install the monitoring/reporting software. Hmmm....
I spoke to the owner of STAC about 10 or 12 years ago. He knew that MS was going to filch his product and kept enough documentation that his suit was a "duh". He was laughing all the way to the bank, because he made more money on the settlement than he would ever have made on the product.
As a background for you kiddies out there, STAC was a compression utility about the time of MS-DOS 6. Bill Gates called the owner of STAC in to discuss his product, said he was unimpressed with it, and then, miraculously, a STAC-alike showed up in MS-DOS 6.1. It was so STAC-alike, in fact, that when STAC sued (with their documentation), it was a hands-down victory and settlement for them.
I put in 'who is "(my name in quotes)"?' and, although the first entry was my daughter instead of me, the rest of the entries were actually about me instead of a Cuban poetess who shares my name.
Microsoft was granted Patent number 213,468,347 for "communication over instellar distances using hydrogen radio frequencies...". MS attorney-bots just launched to prosecute.
http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2004/0830/web-sipr net-08-31-04.asp tells about two viruses (virii?) discovered on the classified military network SIPRNET, specifically, at the Army Space and Missile Defense Command. Apparently our missile control and space defense operates on Microsoft - but how did a virus enter the network? SIPRNET computers are not connected to any other network, and are generally behind locked, limited-access doors.
The program that will kill Microsoft is already written - it's called Windows. MS is just taking a long time to die.
The actual address is support@grants.gov
I just emailed them the following:I do not have a Windows computer. I do not have access to a Windows computer. I would be willing to start a group to port your PureEdge Viewer application to Linux and/or other operating systems such as Solaris (Sun).

Excuse me, some of us slashdot readers don't have a Y chromosome.
