Um, try again. One of the first composite aircraft was the Bolkow Phoebus sailplane designed in the 50's. It was built with a balsa core and glass fiber. Carbon fiber sailplanes began to be produced starting in the mid 70's.

I have been working this schedule for the past 7.5 years and love it. I work on a military base and almost all of the base staff works this schedule. On non working Fridays the place is a ghosttown. An advantage of this is that there are savings in utility bills with no one coming into work on the off Fridays.

I live in Ridgecrest California which is about 50 miles away from Mojave. When I arrived at work this morning I first noticed a bunch of people outside looking up. Above us were two contrails doing a slow right hand pattern. White Night and probably the Alphajet chase plane. When the contrails were way to the south, probably over Edwards Air Force Base, SS1 released and shot off to space. Even from where we were we could easily see the orange rocket plume and also see when the exhaust stopped. A great show that I didn't expect to see at all today.

Actually your backwords in regards to the constant speed propeller. During takeoff the prop is set to fine pitch and in cruse it's set to coarse pitch. It's like the gearing of a car. Fine pitch would be 1'st gear and coarse pitch is the overdrive.

Not exactly, but you are getting closer to the reality of solving GPS solutions than everyone else so far. You do need 4 satellites but the reasons are slightly different. Three satellites give you your position as a pseudorange, usually given as North, East, Down. Now there is a lag from the time the signal leaves the satellite orbiting at 11,000 miles and the fourth variable you solve for is time. The equations to solve for all of this can get pretty nasty, but it is really interesting stuff. One of my projects at work involved solving for all of this. It get's even more interesting when you start adding in more satellites and differential GPS receivers.

Not quite. Scaled didn't do the airframe for the X-45. Their work was with Northrop Grummans X-47A Pegasus. The funding didn't come from the DoD, but instead it was all internal funds comming out of Northrop's pockets. Here is a link a couple pictures of the X-47A on it's first flight at the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station.

The Blackbird is no longer flying. There were two that NASA Dryden was using for some high altitude atmospheric work but they ended up canceling the program for the same reason the Air Force cancelled it. The planes were just too expensive to fly. It still is an absolutely amazing aircraft though. Nothing can fly higher or faster than the Blackbird. Some interesting facts about it is that it can only fly for two hours without refueling and it is only rated to pull 1.4g's. Pull anything more than that and the fuselage will fail. That's not too much of a worry because there is no turbulance at 85k feet.

During the tour he specifically mentioned the dichotomy of his personal standards and selling out with his music. With the money he recieved from licensing his music, he would then turn around and donate it to the sierra club and the like to be used to fight the auto industry, alchol industry, ect. Simply using their own money to fight against them.

While I'm not sure exactly about Canadian law in the US you have to be 1000' above the highest obstacle within a 2000' radius of your aircraft if you are over a populated area. If you are out in the middle of the Mojave desert like I am you only have to be 500' above and 500' away from any person or structure. So if you want to fly your Cessna 150 at 20' you can do so. I wouldn't reccomend it, but you can if you want.

Does anybody here know about the work that is being done on gravity waves? I remember going to a seminar in college where Kip Thorn, a physicist out of Berkley I believe, spoke about his theory of gravity waves. I think these were small ripples in space-time that were supposed to be caused by black holes. The idea was that if they could be measured then it would prove the existance of black holes. I don't remember the particulars, I just went because it gave me extra credit for my Differential Equations class. But it seems that this work is now superseeded by these images from the observatory.
