Apparently you aren't aware of the Politics that goes into the decisions of porting apps within Adobe.

Adobe hasn't wanted to budge on Objective-C even though they have written Objective-C for NeXT.

It's politically driven just as it was when they and a few other key developers strong armed Apple into creating Carbon.

Now that OS X is becoming entrenched that tactic is no longer viable and thus Apple doesn't give a shit because they will have a third party pick up the slack, or do it themselves.

If you don't think Apple can't produce a Framemaker killer you're nuts. It's a matter of necessity, not a lack of ability to do so.

The biggest dilemma I've seen is poor code optimization on all platforms which takes a back seat to feature richness.

At NeXT and now Apple, Avie Tevannian was a stickler for making sure the OS runs on the slowest boxes consumers still purchased and actually run well. As the scale moved up the chipset performance specs the OS responsiveness only improved. There will always be a need for serious SQA Test Harness implementations as well as a sweet spot between system functionality and system performance.

Linux 2.6 is much more enjoyable to work with than 2.4 and it only gets snappier with each patch version.

Throwing out the device driver argument since closed drivers on any platform are solely responsible in coordinating with the OS Vendor to make sure it properly interfaces with the OS System Low Level APIs. Take OS X's I/O Kit as an example.

I see the main crux of RAM increases dealing with the meta data that Filesystems will need with either Longhorn, Linux 2.7.x or OS X, let alone FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc.. There will have to be advancements in VMs because to expect everyone just to purchase 2, 4, 8 or 16 Gigs of RAM for the OS and its necessary applications is assinine. For Servers that makes sense, or Developer system working with BLOBS, etc., but not for a consumer desktop system.

NeXTMail.app was lightyears ahead of other respective email clients, but most wouldn't know this until they see Mail.app.

DSL Modems: Like a traditional modem, a DSL modem connects your computer to your telephone line so you can connect to the Internet. A DSL modem requires a special signal in order to work. Qwest Choice DSL service provides this signal over your existing telephone line, allowing you to surf the Internet and talk on the phone at the same time. Many modems out on the market are not capable of transmitting data at Qwest Choice DSL speeds; new customers to Qwest Choice DSL service can obtain the Actiontec 1524 modem from Qwest. The Actiontec(R) 1524 has a built in 4 port switch, provides a wireless expansion interface and is pre-configured as a router.

Minimum Requirements: To experience all the benefits of Qwest Choice DSL and Qwest Choice DSL Deluxe service, we recommend your computer meets the following minimum system requirements. If you have multiple networked computers, the PC requirements apply to the computer that will be connected to the Qwest Choice DSL modem.

PC (IBM Compatible): Desktop or laptop/notebook

CPU: Pentium(R) class processor minimum speed of 200Mhz

Operating System: Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows ME

NOTE: If you own an iMac, a G3 or a G4 Mac with USB ports, you will need to purchase a USB to DIN8 adapter cable in order for Qwest DSLTM to work properly.
