  1. Easy solution on Studios Face Off in Next-Gen DVD Format War · · Score: 3, Insightful

    Hybrid player

Most likely, 3rd party hybrid players will appear on the market just as soon as either or both formats start being released. Then, the likes of SONY and Toshiba will start to make hybrid players also.

From an end user perspective, this makes sense. Then, it won't really matter what format your Disney or MGM title is, as it will just play on your player.

    That's the way:
    - multiregion players have gone;
    - DVD writers have gone (I have a DVD+/-R(W) drive, for example).

To be honest, the end user doesn't really care about which format wins, or which is better, so long as they can watch the movie, or play the game, or listen to the music.

Seemingly the majority of cars caught speeding in London are Smart cars. Only in the UK and here they are Mercedes Smart cars (designed by the Swatch people, no less).

I did something similar using Premiere - take a shot from a still camera of someone standing, then have them walk off the shot, and leave the camera rolling for a bit.

In premier, cut out the bit where they are walking away, leaving 2 films, and add one of the transition effects between the 2 films.

The person will then magically disappear using whatever effect you selected.

You can have the 'beam' back in the same way. Much easier than rotoscoping a lightsaber too.

I think it is a sensible thing to do, so long as it is temporary. If this is left as a long term solution, then it is very wrong.

I would agree with the other compromise - redirect to a site stating the error, and proving the correct link - this will both educate people to the correct link, and allow those who want to visit the gay site to be able to do so (though I think that is illegal under Aussie law anyway, isn't it?)

To an extent, it is also their own fault for having the .com.au domain - they probably should have followed the UK way and set the domain to be .co.au - at least that way, if the .au isn't there, the URL just won't work.

  6. folders on How To Manage Your Home Directory? · · Score: 1

I create a folder called 'development', and put all development and test stuff in there. It gets to be a bit of a mess, but it keeps $Home clean.

If I need to create a temp directory somewhere, I put it into 'development'.

I have a docs directory for documents, and a personal directory for personal stuff (like my CV, annual leave forms, etc)

After that, it's really a matter of discipline - getting used to not creating temp folders in $Home, and test files, etc.

Over the years, I discovered that the more organised your $Home is, the better it is in the long run anyway, especially when it comes to finding old files, or moving stuff from one folder to another, or when you leave a job and have to hand over stuff to someone else.

Makes even more sense under Windows - I used to have files all over the C and D drives until I got wise and started being tidy.

Discipline is the key, not structure.

Spy Assissin is updated regularly, and each time you run it it downloads it's updated (and reinstalled updated software, if required).

  9. Voting on Election Day Discussion · · Score: 5, Insightful

Someone said to me that, if you are living in an area where the vote is more or less decided (such as a very strong Bush locale, or a very strong Kerry locale), especially if you are voting the other way from the general populus, then don't waste your vote on either the Bush or Kerry side. Instead, vote for one of the smaller parties - if they receive 5% of the vote, then their funding is increased, and they may be able to work on something good in your area.

This doesn't follow in all counties, just in those that are very very strongly Bush or Kerry, and you are voting the other way. 'Cos if you vote the other way, you vote will more or less be lost.

Finally, no matter which way you are thinking of voting, go out and vote. If you don't know who to vote for, then vote for a 3rd party. But cast your vote!

I suppose with cheaper hardware, the total cost of purchasing the hardware/windows bundle becomes cheaper too, meaning that MS can sell more copies of Windows. The more copies they sell, the less people will need to copy it. Is that how Steve is thinking, I wonder.

In that case, what happens in the case that, since the hardware is being sold so cheap, it turned out that it is not capable of running Windows. Doesn't XP require 128Mb memory to run? And a few hundres MB of disk space? And a certain level and speed of Processor? Has Steve thought about that, I wonder. Could he, without realising it, be pushing for hardware that will only run another popular OS, and not his own product?

The answer was 12 (for anyone who wanted to know).

During this time, someone dress in a bee suit walked onto the screen, stood there for about 10 seconds, and walked off the far side. The parcel even passed across this person.

I didn't see the bee at all, until it was played back. The bee was on the screen for a full 20 seconds in total.
