  1. Don't forget Public Enemy... on Gabriel and Eno Start Digital Music Artist Union · · Score: 3, Interesting
In late 1998 Public Enemy got into a big to-do over releasing demo tracks as MP3s on their web site for a then-upcoming remix album.

Chuck D was angry over the label telling him he could not post his own music and Polygram even threatened to sue if the tracks were not removed. This was before Mp3s and filesharing were in the press much. Here is a quote from Chuck D on the matter:

"If you make something for 90 cents, how can you justify to sell it for $9?" he said. "I believe that the fan is the most important, and the fan's been ripped off by the companies pimping technology."

Truthfully, as a TiVo user, I could do quite a bit of what you describe if I wanted to take the time to do so. Mind you, there's much you list that it could not do but I have a DVD player and a computer at home and truthfully will not spend the time required to make it an all-in-one solution.

For example, I did like the concept of programming my TiVo from the office so I installed a NIC and an HTTP daemon . Interestingly I've used it more to show people that it could be done than having done much actual program scheduling with it...reminds me of my "web-enabled" phone.

Anyhow, I guess my point is sometimes some folks don't want or care for an all-in-one geek-toy.

Israel is the size of New Jersey (read: 'slightly larger than a Volkswagon Bug'). This means that comparatively the gov't cannot be that large.

This has to be a saving face issue for MS vs. a revenue loss issue. IBM's (reported) internal drive to get MS off their desktops is probably more of a financial impact with 300k+ employees.

I imagine we'll see a hefty donation to Israel from Bill Gates shortly for some humanitarian cause. Funny thing is that Israel will probably accept it then go about pursuing Open Source regardless.

  6. "Enough is enough"? on CD Copy Protection Case Goes to Court · · Score: 4, Insightful

Only way to let the record companies know "enough is enough" is to stop buying any of their CDs. This means copy-protected ones and, if it persists, just stop buying any CD at all.

I mean, it's not the end of the world if you do not have the latest Foo Fighters so speak with the almighty dollar because in the end that is all that will work with these guys. Curbing your spending will lead to a sales dip as they release these copy-protected CDs and, as everyone becomes accustomed, sales will eventually return close or above to their previous levels. The record companies outlined this happening already. They outline all these possible scenarios when releasing new technology that affects the consumer. They're not stupid.

So bite the bullet and stop buying. I did.

I'm personally back on the wagon regarding going to movie theaters. I'm sick of the garbage put out but started going to the Matrix and Lord of the Ring movies. Now that they're finished the theaters will not get a dime of my money for some mediocre crap. I went 2 years without going to a theater last time around and will go longer this time. Opportunistic movie executives will probably blame the dip on P2P.

I think the point of the article I read in the NY Times was that pre-teens were more open to read other books at the recommendation of their parents after reading (gasp!) Harry Potter. Why knock it?

Actually, I'm thinking there are other motives. In a court of law any claims on how much downloading is hurting their business can still be considered speculative. I mean, it would be difficult or just plain time-consuming for the recording industry to *prove* in a court of law that x number of files are traded by n number of people.

In essense, this amnesty would assemble the evidence list for the RIAA enabling them to go before a court (or congress via their lobbyists) with documented and notarized numbers...can't argue that unless you're Johnny Cochran.
