Technically, it's easy to find two files with the same md5. It is more difficult to find, given an image, another image with the same md5.
Regardless, you're correct that md5 is not a cryptographically secure hash and another should be used. Still, the md5 will match iff the file does, so a false positive could then be tested by more accurate means.
I don't see socialism, I see facism as corporations grow more and more massive with government monopolies granted to stifle competition into some liberterain nightmare.
The end result is the same as communism, but it is an important distinction. No rights, exploitation of poor by rich, etc etc.
Well, socialism is when the government runs everything. Facism is when the government grants monopolies to corporations, which run everything. They both suck.
Hey, it's the only reason anyone bought macs before os x, the educational bonuses. Hell, I'm still bitter about my CS classes being tauight on them in schools.
Currently insurers have massive networks of our personal data that is open to everyone. Either the government does it (socialism) or large corporations that are granted monopolies by the gvmt do it (facism).
I agree it sucks, but it's not a big difference to me if the gvmt oppresses me itself or contracts it out no-bid to Haliburton.
It's a reasonable point. More what I'm asking for is that laws be either enforced:
A) Equally regardless of the law. If it's on the books enforce it B) Proportional to the damage it causes.
It's like going after people swapping kiddie porn instead of those making it (I recognize there is huge overlap and you often catch the first while chasing the second). I see laws intended to stop the viewing of child porn, but what I want to see is laws preventing the exploitation of children.
Of course you do have a point. Consider, however, that there is a copyright czar on the Presidential cabinet. Where's the nigerian bank scam czar, or the spam czar?
I can see some use for this, but I fear like most things it would go after political dissidents and copyright infringers rather than actual criminals. Generally speaking I don't want the government to have/more/ power.
It's not incomprehensible, it's good business sense. The Apple model is make average hardware and very shiny software, then bundle them together with technological safeguards and profit off selling the hardware at 2-3x what other manufacturers charge (for upgardes, initial computers are far more reasonable but there's still the "apple tax")
Apple and MS are about as evil, if anything Apple is worse per unit user. The difference is Apple can make software that doesn't suck in the OS division AND elsewhere.
I want to play Bioshock on my ipod g2 running ipodlinux! I DEMAND MY RIGHTS. Screw free speech and privacy, I'm an American and I know which rights matter!
Don't ask us, the UK is farther down this crapper. We're going to be as hosed as you are when they come for us in a few months or so (by my reckoning):-(

At least we had cs classes I guess
Trick is to make it better wtihout the idiots migrating.
We need our own by-invitation only internet. Convicted felon Ted Stevens can't be in the club.
I'd buy it if it were significantly cheaper than a physical copy and not crippled. Oh wait, that will never happen.
Good thing I like indie titles anyway, which are either free, non-broken, or both.
Naah, in Soviet America Iowa has price control over corn. China's market is freer than ours these days, and they /claim/ to be socialist.
Um...free software...who cares why? It could be to celebrate terrorism for all I care. Probably be a less effective marketing ploy though.
*trips over own legs rushing to surrender liberties at mention of the T word*

Uh...guys? It's not who's freer, US or UK that varies, it's that both are going down the toilet quickly freedom wise.
Terrorism? I'm far more scared of the government.
Really? I prefer linux myself, but ME definitely holds the edge for stability, security, and user experience.
If I were a power user I'd consider upgrading my linux to genuine windows, but us casual users can get by with a lighter experience.
It wasn't always the only one.
It'll be coming to the UK within a month or two and it will be here in the US not too long after that. Don't get too smug:/
It's too absurd for me to feel any anger to be quite honest.
Office has always sucked far less than windows relative to the competition. Compare linux to windows. Now compare open office to office 2007.
See what I mean? I use OOo but then I need office software like 2x/week anyway
Slashdot is not your personal army.

Well what do you expect from the geniuses who invented autorun?

Fair enough, never attribute to malevolence...
I meant hardware upgrades, sorry. I have no knowledge of OS upgrade cost (actually I thought it was free)

The UK is about 6-12mo ahead of the US on the facism curve.
