  1. Risk is your own on Tech Stocks Rollercoaster - How Was Your Ride? · · Score: 1

I knew that investing on-line in these new/recent-IPO stocks was risky. That's why I only put about $2000 in there, something I could afford to lose outright if worst came to worst.

Well as of today that $2000 is worth $300. I have now revised my strategy a bit :)

I am now holding this stock that I bought at 29 (now 4) as a long-term investment. Oh well, live and learn as they say.

Just as an FYI on how the state of Florida can wildly swing between candidates. When the population of votes is so close to 50/50 (or 49/49), it maximizes the standard deviation of that population. Assume there are only 2 choices. In this type of distribution (binary), stdev = N*(p*(1-p))^2. So what was happening is basically some Type I errors caused by either the size or confidence interval of the sample to be too small.

  3. Momentum on Compaq Holds Off On Crusoe · · Score: 4

Just like Linux is having/has had a hard time overcoming the Windows mind-share, so will Transmeta have a similar fate with regard to Intel/AMD.

You can't really expect such a big splash right away with relatively unproven technology (market wise). Just be glad someone (Sony) has given Transmeta/Crusoe a chance and let the performance of their product dictate their success. Look how long AMD took to really get a foothold in the CPU market. After all their K6's, it wasn't really until the Thunderbird Athlon that they earned their place in the market with a fantastic product.

It's so amazing how you can toy with an inferior mind and eventally get them to do your bidding. Oh yeah, it's evil too, but so are they. Two wrongs don't make a right, but they make things even and that's all I care about :)

I would have to agree that communication between you and your kids is the real solution. Not technology/blocking filters.

One method that I could implement (thanks to the power of Linux and IPChains) is to have my kids tell me which sites they need to be looking at and add them explicity to a DENY policy. But this is somewhat Draconian and would not foster the relationship that I want w/my children

The best solution though is proper communication and trust between parent and child, quite a rarity in these days.

  12. Re:Strafe Jumping on New Q3A Patch And Mods · · Score: 1

Strafe Jumping is a method to increase your movement speed by holding the strafe key (either left or right) and jumping repeatedly. It allows you to move at speeds faster than if you had the haste rune. It is not easy to master, but once done, you can literally run circles around the opposing players.

  13. Strafe Jumping on New Q3A Patch And Mods · · Score: 1

As I understand it (I haven't installed 1.25 yet), this update minimizes the effect of strafe-jumping among other physics. For me, strafe-jumping was why I preferred UT over Q3. The strafe-jumping phenomenon started in Q2, but to me, I think it exploited a bug in the movement code rather than a planned method of movement. id kept the code the same in Q3, but for some reason to me it doesn't seem the right thing to do.

I know I'll get many who disagree w/me, but when exploiting a "bug" becomes a major force in talent level in a game, I think the game itself loses something. Just my opinion though, I know there are rabid strafe-jumpers out there who don't want to lose their abilities to a patch udpate.

  15. Value of Dedicated Servers on Microsoft Unhappy With Bungie's Use Of Linux · · Score: 1

Having a Linux dedicated server port for your online multiplayer game is almost a necessity for success these days. It's what set Quake 1 and 2 apart from games like Unreal, Shogo, Sin, etc. (well at least that was part of it).

Also, having users freely provide their bandwidth in support of your game FOR FREE is a big bonus. Granted, most X-Box games will probably have tons of MSN proprietary servers to play on; but if I'm a developer, porting a linux server is really a win-win situation.

  16. Blame Employers on Me-Commerce · · Score: 4

The thing is, it is the employers themselves that are causing this to happen. They determine what style of worker will work for them. I've seen examples where salaried, full-time employees make roughly half of their contracted counterparts. Granted there are no benefits, but double the salary is hard to ignore.

When I first joined the workforce in 1990, I went through about 5 layoff situations in about 2 years, luckily surviving them all. That process didn't make me want to dedicate my life to this company. Once you realize that a company simply sees you as a commodity you begin to put your own situation first and if there are better offers somewhere else, take them. Loyalty is a thing of the past between employer and employee. It is a fickle relationship determined by one's salary. If you can get more elsewhere, you go there. If you can't, you stay. Same with the employer. If they can get someone just as good for less, say goodbye. Don't feel bad about it, just realize it and plan your career accordingly. Of course I am generalizing, but this has been consistent with my experiences.

  18. Control is really the issue as usual on FCC to Require Anti-Piracy Features in Digital TVs · · Score: 3

Right now, there is little control the user (us) has over what is seen on TV. We are told when to laugh, cry, and watch commercials. Introducing the digital nature of broadcasting sets the stage for someone to take control away from the networks and put it into the users hands. Corporate America sees loss of control as loss of income. When you sit down and think about it, it's amazing what we're force fed collectively each day through the media. Those who are currently in the money don't want that to change. They are willing to let us watch that latest pepsi commercial in HDTV format though. How nice of them. :)

However, after seeing the dedication and "mad skillz" some of these near full-time players, I'm simply amazed. I don't want to denigrate their abilities, but really, what's it all worth?
All that investment in playing and perfecting that 180-degree spin-rocket jump-switch to railgun-mid-air frag doesn't amount to much anywhere else except in that virtual world. Isn't there anything more constructive to do? Again, don't get me wrong, I love to play, but I think I do so in moderation. I can't imagine that these skills are developed overnight, so investing all those hours and hours of playing just seems so wasteful.

However, I really don't think it's such a wise decision for a consumer to rush right out and by a product the day it's available. First off, the drivers (be they windows/linux/whatever) are generally not very mature, nor support the full features of the hardware.

It would seem that the smart buyer would wait for USER's reviews, be it friends, newsgroups, etc. Those are the true reviewers, your peers.

I never trust a website/magazine review anyway. The product they reviewed is not always what's seen on the shelf and I refuse to pay top dollar for what might really be a beta product.
