it is fairly well known that the programmers in third world countries can run circles around the spoon feed masses in the States. MS doesnt employ them out of charity, and they dont pay them any less (if fact it costs them more just to get the visas). not to mention the increased cost of business just for cultural / language issues
We bash MS because they took 5 years to produce an OS that for most people, isn't an upgrade. Sure there are some nice features, but for the average user, most of the changes were cosmetic.
i couldnt agree more -- what is the difference between window vista and xp+windows blinds?
FWIW--
i've got vista intalled(i know, i know- geek credentials have been forfeited already)
the wireless drivers for my belkin wireless n card have never worked correctly (pc freezes after a while).
i dream of the day when all software developers go platform agnostic.
seriously, if you cant figure out how to get your debt paid off, cant get a decent job, or are too dam lazy - you shouldnt have gone to college in the first place.
i think a real problem is the colleges teach to the book, instead of cultivating free thought.
Now...honestly, what do you think is really going to change?
it seems clear that the change has already started. change from controlling the american public with fear uncertainty and doubt, to an american public that believes in hope and a desire to do well. a public that is not being controlled but are being convinced.
common courtesy FTW!! seriously i completely agree, but it seems that courtesy is locked in an eternal September when it comes to the internet.

if you dont want them exposed, i believe it is your responsibility to make sure they dont have access to that type of material.
the internet is basically like having cable service that gets all the channels, if you dont want the kids watch the explicit channels its your job to block them. it is really not our job to not be explicit. (and for the record, i dont like the immature ramblings of cretins we find out there either, but i put up with it)
First you'll need to install a stable and strong government. Make sure it can contain sectarian fighting.
It can be done, at least in principle. Look at Chechnya in Russia for a 'success story'.
we already installed a government in Iran in 1953: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ajax what we are dealing with now, and what had to deal with in Iraq (Saddam Hussein)-- is the aftermath of installing governments.
the main problem with installing a government (IMHO)is that it is not done benevolently (which is supposed to be the premise for being in the country in the first place). History has shown us that those with the power to make decisions, will do so to serve their own purposes. there certainly is not an easy answer but i think the OP had it right - GTFO and and let them 'fish' for themselves - instead of giving them a fish everyday
fact is that when a Iranian leader tried to better his country by selling its valuable resources (oil) instead of bowing down to foreign powers and letting them take what they wanted [against threat of course] -- he was forcibly removed from office by the foreign powers who were trying to take the resources in the first place. "all the shaw's men" is a really interesting book on the subject of that coup - but you can get the short and skinny from wikipedia
evidently my desire for improved intellectual discussion makes me a bottom feeder.
and in case you missed it, i am actually referring to your original post as intellectual discussion.
the value of actually including the link, versus my googling it is that we get to look at the same report.
FTW! - from the link it was a little helicopter assembled out of 4 suitcases and had:
"Loaded with gadgetry, Little Nellie sported two rear flame guns, aerial mines, front-mounted machine guns, two rocket launchers, smoke ejectors and two heat seeking air-to-air missiles"
Well, I bought one because it was(arguably still is) the best smart phone on the market.
really? i had thought blackberry was the best smart phone on the market, you know with their majority market share that they have had for the last few years. http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=575
the Government... actually control it here in the US? Nope. And I would become quite concerned if the government starts controlling it [the economy].
while the government might not control the economy. it sure as hell tries to - e.g. $700 billion bail out, changing interest rates to pander to short term goals...etc. the reality is that the economy is not 'controlled' by anyone, rather a lot people work really hard (and get paid quite a bit) to influence it.
and as a side note - while the US might not be a socialist state - it sure tries to be -- e.g. social security, welfare, affirmative action (yeah, i just went there, and i am a minority living in the US) - these are straight up socialist programs.
you can find images from LIFE if you append this to an image search on google 'source:life'
i think the article is missing the point - this technology opens the door to a great comparison of camera and sensor technology.
with this tech someone could do an extensive research project on camera qualities.
^HILARIOUS! (too bad i got no mod points left)
On this scale, isn't observation interaction?
i think you mean the scale below - quarks. those have only been able to be observed by interaction (where-the-hell-is-that-quark-now-science).
i could be completely wrong as i'm not a quantum physicist either
you dont see value in creating a good service even if you are not gaining anything from it?
thats a little short sighted
wow, i had no idea that /. karma was so valuable. or that such shenanigans were taking place.
cheers for the heads up
if you use any electronic device known to man you are a consumer of [some form] of an OS.

xp+windows blinds runs better

i agree - why did that get modded down?
and i just spent all my mod points yesterday *shakes head*
updated that for us http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice-nine

i read that as your wife has a cow's threshold...
anyone else?
(no offense intended)

see, system works as designed
that 'foul smell' is their deodorant
It's much easier to grow a mass of muscle cells and raise them to maturity than it would be to grow an entire animal from scratch.
FWIW-- i dont believe that is true. nature has been growing animals from scratch with little or no effort on our end for some time now.
Now...honestly, what do you think is really going to change?
