Not to mention the performance improvements for database clusters with record level locking, and improved IO scheduling because of higher IO transaction locality. Though the feature I wish for most is HP-UX style context-sensitive directories. Heck virtual dirs look so simple, I don't see why everybody bashes MS for WinFS delays, if the lnux guys can't hack up something similar in so much time. Both would be a boon to package managers for conflicting libraries.

Per application (type?), per job type, settings, persistent across the system? SELinux style application profile setting integrated in the package by maintainers would be a better solution. Hell, I run Fedora 13 with SELinux on full blast, and having no issues so far, except for one quickly resolved bug. Keep in mind the SEL has been running since the box was a fresh of the repo FC12 install.

Have you considered making the schedulers tunable by per application parameters? Setting IO, CPU, and RAM (swapiness) priority per process, for instance. Side question, I was always curious whether there exists a hypothetical situation in which a garbage collector is included in the kernel. What are you plans on record oriented interfaces for the vfs layer, and possibly a fs agnostic on-line defragmentator, possibly with some minimal interfacing with the fs - for improving DB performance, and enabling ports from z/VSE and VMS. Is being a mainframe migration target anywhere on the roadmap? Sorry for the ad-hoc interview, I hope you don't mind.

You know, the VirtBox team or someone else could make an alternative to WINE, a plug-n-play VM which strips down, automatically installs and configures and slip-streams an alternate shell(s) and guest additions (3D included), to integrate with distro native GUI, running in seamless mode, and auto-generating stub *nix executable lauchers, wrapped in .deb/.rpm/whatever backed by a local repository, obsoleting uninstalled apps launchers with a control package, setting up a anacron job to do a package group update on boot, with these windows apps launchers in a separate package group. And a custom Add/remove programs interface, exported through a yum/apt front end plugin, so that stub package removed form the *nix package manager, result in program removal on the Windows VM. Seems the perfect solution for avid gamers, tired of dual booting, Heck add an option to use an existing windows install, and add a restore Win installation option. Any takers for this sort of project?

There are two sides to the saying "Ubuntu is an African word meaning I can't configure Debian.". Not to mention the stale packages (fixable by enabling the testing repo), and crappy DE integration. There is no reason vanilla Debian can't replace Ubuntu, it's just that they won't. Not being a troll, every distro has it's place.
