The main gameplay sections actually aren't that different between the 2! In fact this is most obvious in GTA3, which had an "overhead" camera mode that made it look surprisingly close to 2. Really, the difference is mostly camera angle, and being able to do a bit more vertically. (And, I'd say, drive a lot faster since then you could see where you were going!)
The real difference, IMO, was that *cutscenes* were now in the same 3D engine, instead of just voiceover phonecalls and what not. This compelled the designers to make the games rather more linear... branching, a tad, but linear. I never got deeply into 2 but I think it had a lot more flexibility in what missions you took and which gang you sided with. I know some people who say 2 is better than 3 for that kind of reason.
give them credit where credit is due. The same research facility came up with another similar technology where you can attach multiple (unlimited) mice to a single PC and all operate independently. This means that you can put many kids on a single computer, and they can all play and learn, basically for free, as all the costs you have for adding one more child to the PC, is adding one more (USB) mouse. Neat, isn't it.
That could make for some interesting gaming experiences.
I think Cringlely is dead wrong on all this -- in the past few years it's been Global Services and software that are really hauling everything else along. I think Hardware would probably survive on its own, as long as they could keep the IBM marque, but the money is in the service crap You may be right. I hope so, but I remember the company I moved to that was supposed to be my post-dot-bomb shelter; it was a division of a big umbrella financial company, and I thought that would provide some level of protection... especially because my division was doing pretty well, making 90%+ of its financial goals in a tough environment.
So, upper upper management then has two things they can say to themselves: A. hmmm, these guys are doing ok, let's leave them alone and not spoil a good thing B. boy, i wonder if these guys couldn't do about as well with less resources, so we can cover the asses of the other divisions.
This may or not me relevant to the IBM situation, but it's something to keep in mind.
I think something got lost in translation here. Or is a desire to write a book really a sign of the end times? Heh, in our increasingly "post-literate" age it seems kind of odd.
Maybe a "truer to the spirit" translation would be "every man wants his own talk show":-)

Well, obviously the Palm Z22 is as close as the market has gone to this, thought the price point is just about twice your stated max.
Its nice and light and has a terrific form factor; I think by having a smaller screen they avoid the usual Palm misthink of "thin, flat, sharp cornered" for their compact devices.
I don't know how much cheaper they could get and keep a color screen, synching ability (which is crucical, especially for pseudo-disposables) and the touch screen.

However, one thing is clear: the days of basic PIM functions being worth competing in are over. There just isn't enough profit. Handheld devices have to compete as phones, platforms, or both.
Which sucks, because NO ONE did a PIM UI as well as Palm. Everyone else takes crap that was mediocre even on the desktop and then tries to scale it down.
Not to totally underplay vitamins, but we I think it's reasonable to think that we don't always process pills the same way we do stuff from other sources.
A good point, I may have been a bit corrupted by HTML/CSS, but... I dunno, it seems like even old fashioned tables and CSS might be a more reliable way of accurately reproducing a screenshot into a screen...
The short description of GWT is: If you like the idea of web programming feeling like writing an applet, GWT is just the thing.
Probably my biggest concern after evaluating it was the layout issue; though I guess the "AbsolutePanel" or that "Instantiations GWT Designer" Eclipse plugin might help... along with hunkering down and learning the damn CSS....
Still, programmatic layout is kind of an odd duck.
Also, is it "easy" to add in 3rd party javascript widgets, per se? Seemed a little akward, or at least un-GWT-ish...
You know, when he was re-elected, getting more votes than Kerry, who got more votes than Gore did in 2000, the pointless whining became even more pointless.
Bush won two very close elections, in one of which he got over 50% of the vote, something his predecessor never did.
Get over it. Just to push this further in the realm of offtopic political flamage:
I'll get over it just as soon as the negative ramifications of the 2000 are finished. Hell, I'll settle for the war to be over. Sure Bush made himself a war president and got the 2004 election handily, benefiting from how the way he won in 2000 made 3rd party candidates seem even less viable than usual. Big whup.
The fact is, the guy getting a larger number of people's votes not getting the office is kinda weird. I understand there are reasons for it in how we "want" politicians to campaign (i.e. not just play to the needs of big population centers etc etc) but still, it's an ugly special case of representative democracy.
Back on topic: yeah, I dig projection screens. And I think high-rez is currently a little over-rated.
I don't think the PS3 is to its competitors what the Neo Geo was back in its day.
People were in awe of the Neo Geo, rightfully so; that was some serious arcade hardware; but now the gap between console and arcade has generally reversed, the PC is there to be the real cutting edge, and people don't see what the PS3 does that's so much better than say, the 360.
At the risk of being too "poetic", the PS3 doesn't have the soul that the neo geo had, and won't get the fan boy attention or respect.
In general we're in agreement; there may be some "edge" cases that are exceptions:
I think some people might have made some money on "Classic Old Commercials You Love!" type compilations or tv specials. (Also for a while there was that AdAge site that was for money, but that might have been related to the bandwidth as much as anything.)
Also, some old advertisements might prove to be an embarrassment to a modern company, as tastes and various societal standards change. Something playful and witty back in the day may be seen as misogynistic now, or racist, etc etc.
So I think you're by and large correct but there might be some exceptions.
i think there's a giant split in the Youtube community... maybe a three way split: * people who use it to document interesting things they do, and the people who go to see them do it (the boingboing crowd) * people who do blatantly attenntion whoring stuff (the myspace crowd; obviously the difference between these 2 can be a matter of opinion) * people who use it for copyrighted stuff like anime dubs and tv shows
It all depends on where you find your links into youtube I guess...

Rolodex organizer w/ "touch screen" for $15, or one with a keyboard for about the same price.
I don't see them as setting the world on fire.

Well, Gore got more votes than the guy who got awarded the office; that's the counterintuitive bit.
