  1. PARENT IS A TROLL?? on First (proof-of-concept) .NET virus · · Score: 1, Troll
Okay well I guess this is just my public posting as to wondering how the parent is a troll at all. I posted it with the opinion behind how Virii creators bring business to Virii scanning companies and how it's all a sham where the end user is hurt 2 fold. By having to clean up the mess of a virus and then having to pay for the virii scanning software.

Looks like someone should really read the moderator guidelines.

The reason I'm upset is simple. Virii creators shouldn't be held up as celebrities, but no higher than script kiddies. Anyone who codes knows they can make virii, but don't ... why ...

Ethics. Though hacker ethics may be skewed from the status-quo, but they are still there. And any true hacker knows what their ethics are ... and I have yet to see someone who is truly a hacker make a virus. You think Torvalds couldn't screw quite a few people by putting some type of a backdoor in the kernel? ... of course ... but he doesn't because like a million other coders/hackers ... they have ethics that say something like this is wrong ... and they DON'T DO IT.

And again ... why are virus scanning companies encouraging the creation of virii ?? I would think the world would be a better place with no Virii out there ... but then ... how would Symantec make any money??

Since when are viruses legal to make. Last I checked viruses were illegal and I'm actually quite tired of hearing about them in a glamourous manner. I don't care if it's MS's fault about code or poor software writers who make coding mistakes and leave holes open.

Virii are money making entities in themselves and I'm tired of seeing companies encourging the creation of Virii. I don't remember when, but I do remember a scandal typeness on the net a LONG while ago about McAffee going out to software writers to see if they would be interested in writing virii to test out their detector ... then they just happen to get released out into the wild.

The other thing that I see wrong with Virii and Worms is that it kills the IT world. IT department heads are forced to clean up after end user mistakes when they could be developing. And when a worm like nimbda is released my bandwidth was cut by a third almost.

It's rediculous ... and I'm really sick of it ... virii writers are the lowest of lows when it comes to software. A monkey can code, but a true hacker can realize when his code could harm something or someone.

Groups.google.com seems like the kind of thing they're doing just becuase they can, though. I can't imagine there is much money to be made off the technology, because it's all text - the same search tech applies. So, as far as I can tell, there is no business reason to be doing this. it's a drain on resources with little to no return, except for (geek) community goodwill.

I think they should make a new award "Reminds me of a when I was a kid". Because the entire movie followed the book quite well IMHO. I haven't read the books for some time, but not in my wildest imagination could I have dreamed of the landscapes and characters in the film. The hobbits never wearing shoes, the magic and understanding of wizzards and elves. The hatred of elves and dwarfs and how humans are low on the totem poll of evolution.

The visual effects drew you in and you never once thought that it was fake, but the time and dedication it would have taken to make the builsings and structures that were in the film. Also the true understanding of the power of the ring and the power of commitment.

I did, however, confuse the story of the hobbit in the begining, but that was portrayed to me in a flashback at the begining where the stories start and begin. They were all meant to go together and they do so wonderfully. I don't think Tolkein could have understood what an impact his stories would have actually had on the world when he wrote them.

For a bit of humor... someone who accompanied me who had not read the books didn't irst understand that the movie WAS 3 hours long and was getting a little bored by not really understanding what was happening in the movie and not getting into it. But I think we can all relate to the next quote directly when the credits started "WHAT??!!! that was it??? no WAY ... they can't just end it like that!!!" ...

Well I will say that my X-Mas present of the LoTR book set from think geek has been confisgated for a while now :-) ... ohh well at least she'll know that the movie ended there for a reason ... hehehe the book ended :-)

Seriously people you can't really argue how these companies are "bad" when you yourselves are using these programs for completely illegal purposes. All these programs do is suck bandwidth and violate copyrights.

Granted there are legal reasons to use these programs, but the other 99% of the traffic is no where near legal. If you don't like the spyware then don't install the programs... if you want massive amounts of mp3's and pr0n then go ahead and download them, but be aware ... they are going to throw ads at you that will maybe score them a buck or two.

On a side note I'm actually tired of Napster clones always making the page on slashdot and this will be the last comment I make to such a story because all we're doing is helping to promote copyright violations and fuel the fire that made the DMCA possible.

For some reason /. users have the right to mod as editors have the right to mod. Except editors seem to only mod down.

Not a new trend by any means and this is a website that has no reason to comply with users, but slashdot _IS_ a popular site and has quite a few users that use comments on slashdot to not only get opinions but gain further knowledge into the subject of the article. The Mod +1 Funny is entertaining, but a mod +5 funny is completely useless. I personally know this because the main parent comment was a 5 for a while as was the other one. Funny comments, while entertaining, are not good for learning purposes and actually get in the way of serious discussion.

Personally I think the modding down should be regulated alot more than it is. AC posts should be banned ... there's no reason to have them ... creating an account is very easy to do and if you don't want to stand behind your comments then you shouldn't post them. I run a site with PHP-Nuke and non-verified accounts are prohibited from posting as are annonymous comments ...

I think slashdot is a great idea and a great site and a few changes should be made to make a better surfing experience. Modding down should be reserved for Editors only and a mod history should also be available ... also no reason not to stand behind your moderations.

Well Charter Cable customers now have the wonderous Tioga spyware installed on their systems. It's been posted to slashdot a few times and been rejected. Members from the MadLug (Madison, WI). Have noted that the new service listens on a specific port to monitor and "Assist".

The county board is also investigating this. The software is supposed to be a VNC-Type program that helps Service Reps service computers. Basically I see this as a way for them to not only monitor, but have their way with your system. Along with this software also comes a real annoying Internet Explorer with Charter MSN crap everywhere, diabling network shares, and reformating TCP/IP to their network. Basically everything you can do yourself, but they won't tell you because they want you to install their software.

The whole thing stinks and the company is hiding behind lawyers and PR reps to try and get the whole situation worked out. Basically they released a new service, and the MadLUG guys were on them in 2 days when they noticed weird activity.

Moral of the story ... don't screw with geeks ... we'll find you ... we know who you are :-)

Which is still the case and is still "required" to use their service or receive any help from their helpdesk.

I still think this stinks and is definantelly not neccessary for the service to be availalbe. I have taken screen captures of Linux, BSD, QNX, BeOS, Win95/98/NT/ME/2K/XP all running the software (even though they say it only runs on 98/2K/and XP). And I know from witnessed experience that it works on Mac OS 9&X ... basically any OS that can do TCP/IP and has DHCP support.

So not only is this software not neccessary but it seems to be some sort of ploy to promote WinBlows and crap on other OS's not just linux.
