Oh come on. They did bring GUI based OS to milions of people. Apple tried but essentialy failed, MS did not. You have to give that to them. It might be not perfect but nothing else comes even close to uusability of NT workstation ( from the GUI point of view , of course)
Hey, I do use AccelX and therefore trust "a closed source component" In fact, it beats the hell out of XFree on my system so why should I switch to something slower and basically, inferior ?
"and no real performance benefit that was noticeable, " You are pushing it here... I used Matrox Mystique and now G 200 and in both cases performance increase was very noticeable. I did have to run x11perf or anything liek that -it was simply visibly faster.
Well, it looks like better half of original XFree project ended up in XiG. How else would you explain difference in quality (specially speed !!) between two products.
Don't count on it. AccellX has a great product, much better than XFree. I paid $ 100 and I am extremely happy with AccelX 5. ( one thing that sucks is that I need to shell out another 200 for laptop as XFree (trident) on ThinkPad is almost unusable , so slow)
Yes , most graphics card are supported under XFree but there is also issue of the quality of support. From my experience, I can tell you, AceelX server are always faster, sometimes bit more, sometimes a lot more, but consistently outperform XFree. That's good enough reason for me.
Yep. This is madness. And they do bitch about MS being bloated... huh. ( same goes for Enlightement... 20 "support" packages - people don't think, I guess, they just release software )\
Hehe, you don't have to be so politically correct here dude. If Enlightenment for you is much more stable that any win soft, then you should probably finally ditch that Windows 2.0 or whatever you are using and move to something more up to date ( NT ?? )
Seriously, this is obviously complete bullshit you are trying ro inflict on/. On the other hand, considering usual/. audience, your post most likely won't be considered as such. Sad.
Most of his criticism was factually supported by various quotes from active members of "OSS culture". Actualy, I think Nikolais piece was first one to publicly point out the fact that there are some problems with OSS ( something that OSS community wasn't willing to do...)
"Functionality should always come before whether or not it's "free" software by anyone's definition.
If that were true, there would quite likely be no free software, since you need at least some users to do feature-requesting and bug-finding. IT isn't the beginning and the end of the computer-using world, whatever it might think:) "
It is true ( or at least it should be.) As soon as people abondon merit in favor of ideology, quality suffers imensely.
You are wrong here dude. MS IE is simply superior to Netscape ann while at the beginning MS might have used OS to their advantage , now it doesn't matter anyway. IE is techmologicaly more advanced then Netscape. It is better and that;s what counts.
We can't hide the truth. Netscape lost technological battle with IE. It simply doesn't work as well as IE, is more crash prone, not as fast and generally feels clumsy when compared to newest MS offering. We really lack good browser on the unix platform - there is some hope with Opera but I don't know enough about this product to compare it to IE. KDE has one too but I found it usefull only for viewing static HTML ( localy) So what are we left with ?? Anybody has any ideas ?
and one more thing... I was born in Europe, moved to US 8 years ago and, no , I don't watch TV ( I watch lot of video movies instead.) Your generalization is widely off the mark this time...
"Silicon Valley is supposed to be the center of the universe when it comes to technology," he said. "It's a third-world country."
How pathetic is that ?? How come he ended up in SV instead of his native Finland. People should realize that his knowledge of economy and related issues is basically null. I really think he should stick to coding...
Oh, and you would love to have "charting component" available for free so you can make money using it without having to spend any. How convinient !
Everything costs money, how the hell do you think Linux/FreeBSD etc.. developers make living ? They work for companies producing various "charting components". GPL means death for software developers , no more highly paid jobs, software has no market value whatsoever etc. How stupid one has to be not to realize this simple fact.
If they are greedy then, according to your logic they should release as much code as possible since this will generate them more revenue. And by they way, being greedy is what makes business work.

I think the only reason GNOME is being even used is the fact that it comes by default with RH.
Who in their right mind would donwload 30 packages !!

I was wondering if you actually play any other games beside Quake and if you do what games do you play ?

Actually, National Socializm was a mix of socializm and nationalizm. The fact that Hitler targeted commies doesn't mean anything. So did Stalin ...

When people start abusing the rules, it is time to start enforcing these using any means possible. ...
And that's exactly what they are doing
One sure way to get your Karma way down is to mention anything positive about NT. It works every time.
and one more thing ... ...

It still doesn't change the fact the as soon as he got famous he moved to the place where "things happen". There is got to be a reason for that.
You are completely out of line here dude ... ... "STUPID GUY" was much much more than that.
Linux is just a guy who knows how to write C code
In some areas NT is way ahead of any UNIX ...

Heroic ?? What so damn heroic about releasing source code ? ...
It is only a business. Those who win count and so far it is MS that wins consistently
