You know, I consider myself a geek and I feel at home on Slashdot until they go and post something like a silly new GeForce 2 Ultra being released. Shouldn't that be on a website dedicated to PC game news?

</sarcasm> Sorry about that, it probably would've been more effective sarcasm if I referred to something about the X-Files or quantum physics theories.

There are many geeks that like anime. There are many people that like anime that aren't geeks, and there are many geeks that don't like anime. But couldn't you substitute just about anything in the place of "anime" there?

Unfortunately, blowing off steam about how you don't like anime will not convince Slashdot to stop posting anime-related news, nor will it fix your problem of seeing anime-related news on Slashdot. You can fix the latter problem by going into your preferences and setting it to not display anime news.

  3. It's because CN doesn't have a choice. on Toonami Plans Revealed · · Score: 1
CN officials have stated that they hate cutting up anime, and they would rather not do it at all. Look at the Tenchi Muyo OAV, for example -- while they could've cut out the scenes with nudity, they digitally painted over them. Sure, the digital painting looks crappy, but keep in mind that it's a very expensive and time-consuming process, and they did it because they want to cut out as little as possible. They still cut out a noticeable bit of footage, but they also had time constraints to worry about. (Tenchi OAV episodes are a full thirty minutes long, as opposed to the usual 21 for American cartoons or 25 for other anime series)

Being a standard cable channel, they simply aren't allowed by the government to show certain things. If they did something like show Tenchi unedited, they'd be shoulder-deep in legal trouble before they knew it. If they had a Toonami channel, they would have to make it a pay channel (similar to Cinemax or HBO) in order to show unedited material on it.

I usually prefer dubbed. Yeah, I know a lot of subtitle fanatics that would mob me for saying that, but I do. One of the things that draws me to anime is the art and animation style, and if I can actually understand what the characters are saying, I can concentrate on what's happening on-screen. With subtitles, I have to concentrate on reading them and hope I can get a glance at the rest of the screen inbetween 'em.

And I haven't seen Macross, but I would love to see Eva and Escaflowne on TV. Fox is doing a dub of Esca -- I think the release date is sometime around August 19, I'm not sure -- but they'll probably cut it up even more than CN would.

On second thought, I don't think there's any way Eva could be shown without serious cutting...

How could Taco recommend Ninja Scroll? I've seen it, and perhaps I'm missing some underlying meaning, but I thought it was a gore-and-sex-fest (although the sex isn't that graphic) without much redeeming value at all. Yeah, the art's pretty, and Jubei's a cool character. But that's all. In addition, I've seen a lot of people recommend Akira. My advice to people who haven't seen Akira: Don't see it. The plot is horrible, both in content and how it was mutilated from the original manga. Although some of the animation is nice, the artwork is rather sub-par. I've got nothing against a good action flick, but there's something wrong about the last third of the movie involving the main character's body swelling, becoming a giant mutant baby, squishing the only good character in the movie, and all the while Tetsu and Kaneda yell "Kaneda!" and "Tetsuo!" at each other. Read the manga if you're at all interested in Akira... A few animes I'd recommend that fall into the action category are Iria, Armitage III (see the OAV rather than the movie, if at all possible), and Ghost in the Shell (many people have already mentioned the last). Vampire Hunter D is also decent, but again, it's a little gore-heavy and plot-thin for my tastes.

Uh-huh. Now you're being REALLY cool. Saying that religious people are less intelligent? OOoooh, your friends must be *REALLY* impressed. Keep it up..... maybe you'll find fulfillment in your life someday. I doubt it.

Actually, I think that the person you replied to was trying to say that people who are of above-average intelligence also tend to be more tolerant and understanding of other people.

Perhaps you aren't aware that your beloved SCIENCE was created BY Christians and FOR Christians. Almost all of the greatest scientists of history have been Christians. Even today, the founders of almost all branches of science are Christian.

There not much I can say here that other posters haven't pointed out. Except that for the "even today.." part.. I would certainly hope that the founders of science today are the same founders that've been around for thousands of years, which aren't all necessarily Christian.

Perhaps you believe in "evolution", or that life came into existence on its own. Well, you should be aware that prominent atheists CALCULATED the probability that life could come into existence without intelligent intervention, and concluded that it was BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE.

Note: There is no such thing as "beyond impossible." The chances are almost infinitely small, but then, the universe theoretically has an infinitely large amount of time to do it in. To use an example, let's say you were rolling a 20-billion sided die. The chance of it landing on 1 is 1 in 20 billion, but if you roll it a trillion times...

Atheism has been disproven over and over again with hard science. All true, unbiased scientists are Christian. So who's the one believing in fairy tales? To disprove atheism, you'd have to prove that a god (or gods) exists. Nobody has yet been able to do so. Religion is based on faith, anyways, isn't it? If you have evidence to believe something, it's not just faith anymore, is it?

As to veterans not helping new users, I believe this to be good. Three years ago I knew nothing of the Internet, Web, IRC, Hotline or anything else Net-related, or for that matter computer-related. Nobody would volunteer any help, so instead of giving up like a loser, I just learned by myself.

Oh, I see! Because people didn't help you when you asked questions, logically you should take it out on the current batch of newbies by disregarding them. Man, maybe teachers at schools could learn from this, too.

As for women, I can understand perfectly why they don't care to post on male-dominated sites such as Slashdot. Their interests are most propably in different fields, and they prefer discussions with people that share their hobbies (i.e. most propably other women). It's no different than in real life.

Come now, if you're as intelligent as you say, you should be above such gross generalizations. In my experience, the categories "male" and "female" have no influence over what fields a person is interested in. Society tends to push one way or another, but I've known females that absolutely loved engineering, computer work, etc.

By the way, Jon, I'm wondering, what is an MS-Word using non-geek doing on Slashdot?

Along the same vein, what's a MacOS using "geek" doing on Slashdot?

I think this is the type of thing that people have been referring to when they mention people posting before thinking things through. Disagreement is fine, but let's avoid baseless/hypocritical responses. But I could possibly be wrong.
