Okay, that's a good explanation. I guess I was assuming that there'd also be some level of tax reduction that goes along with this, but in the absence of that I can see what you're saying.
HMRC knows this happens all the time, but it would cost them more to collect the small amount of tax due than they would get back
Governments don't always have a problem with taxes that make them lose revenue in the long run. For example, only 7% of the U.S. federal budget comes from the U.S. corporate income tax. If it were abolished, the feds would make more from the increased revenue from personal income tax and payroll taxes from the more and better jobs that would return to the U.S. But it wouldn't be the populist thing to do, so we'll never see it. Oh well.
If the UN suddenly claimed the power to force member states to pass laws on their citizens, the "US out of UN" movement would probably quintuple in size overnight and they'd be looking for new office space to lease.
Well shoot, when you put it that way it almost makes me want to support it!
Yep, sure do. It was pushed by a particular political party that makes a lot of noise about personal freedoms. Not that the "opposition" put up any.. These people should be charged with wasting the court's time that is spent striking them down. How often do we need to remind them what the 1st Amendment actually says?
Unfortunately, we have to succeed every time they try while they only have to succeed once.
That would have been funnier had I spelled his name right. Well, unless I was subconsciously referring to "Czech Norris", the secret Warsaw Pact project to create a superbeing to rival that similarly named hero from the West....
The books you described are priced inline, I'm sorry to say, with your typical college text book. Which, as a side note, I suggest that you do not sell back to the school bookstore at the end of the semester. If you have a good professor, the books are chosen to supplement your education, and make a great start to your personal library.
I take the opposite view. Try getting college textbooks used, or get the cheap international edition sent to you from India, or -- best of all if you can -- check it out of the school library and keep renewing it until the end of the course.
Consider that if the book really does turn out to be that important to your future career you'll know by the end of the course. You can always buy a used copy at that point for next to nothing from one of your classmates.
The feds could create jobs tomorrow if they increased the size of the military and civilian service.
Of course they couldn't since they don't have magic powers. All the jobs they create would be more than matched by job losses in the private sector, since that's who'd be taxed to pay for it.
If the world really is as dangerous as they say it is, there will be a need for these jobs.
Fortunately, it isn't. The size of the U.S. military is far larger than it needs to be to counter any possible invasion; its purpose is to be able to invade and occupy foreign countries to further the interests of the politically connected.
Because it's young it seems like it wont be corrupted.
Maybe the UN doesn't seem like it would be corrupted to a retarded fool, but most people with any ability of observation can see it's worse than useless.
I can't remember the last time I wish I had the points to mod an AC first post up, but this would qualify. It's her policies that matter, not her plumbing.
Canada is part of the Commonwealth of Nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations), in general we are a happy member of this organization. The Queen is the titular head of the Commonwealth and thus of Canada.
Being head of the Commonwealth does not make her the head of every country that is a Commonwealth member. Plenty of Commonwealth countries have dumped monarchism, whether on independence or as a subsequent reform.

Which one of these proposals do you really think would "collapse the economy", and why?

You're talking about him like he didn't make the 911 call. But he did. So, fuck you three times back at you, I guess.
Yes, you are.
Only on Slashdot would an explanation of how snail mail works be modded informative. :-)
That's probably for the best. Who'd want to have everyone's voices gradually get more and more silly?
Anyone who thinks that these games have gotten no attention has never seen the hilarious trailer for Minesweeper: The Movie.
Unless you're trying to trick people into thinking you're good looking when you're really not.

You're just mad because you've been holding onto a DJIA index fund for the last twelve years, right?
That's trollish. Many people favor a gold standard without being conspiracy theorists.
Only in China ...would they say that people speaking their mind is spreading political unrest.
Welcome! So, what color is the sky on your planet?

You know, with all these interesting factoids about Feynman, he almost comes across as the geek version of Check Norris....
We're Americans, damn it! Maricons, maybe.
Uhhhhm, I don't think that last word there means what you think it means.

I like it because of its right click->Validate feature, which sends the cached copy of the current page to the w3 validator.
There's a Firefox add-on called Page Validator that does that.

Animations? So with a buildup like that we get... a blink tag?

Panera makes yummy bread and pastries, and there's free wifi there! They'd totally want one.
