Who cares how many thousands of acres it would take to meet our energy needs? There's thousands and thousands of acres of rainforests we can bulldoze to plant corn and sugar cane. And the rainforest trees can be converted to ethanol too! It's a win-win situation.
Won't somebody PLEASE think of the smokers?

Yes I know it's a filthy habit but substitute coffee/jolt/coke with a cigarette and that's what my left hand is being used for while doing any animation and/or general computing.
Socialism, not communism. Socialism is very good in theory with each individual contributing to the greater whole, as in open source. Communism is a bastardized version of socialism, as in Microsoft.
Love them or hate them, but id software probably has the best solution to the problem. They have always set their release dates as "when it's done" and it has always been for the best. I'm not referring to the (nearly) total lack of storyline but the fact that you don't go out, buy the game, and go home and download a fix for it. As far as I know, sales for id games don't suffer from delays. Perhaps the bigger problem is lack of quality products: you aren't nearly so ticked off when a game is delayed but it turns out to be fantastic.
How long before some terrorist group finds a way to sabotage a portion of the easily accesible track to wipe out a large group of passengers that close to the ground?
Sure, we'd all love to continue receiving free services but the simple fact of the matter is that since the majority of us hate banner ads and the like, revenue has to be made somewhere. People (and I am not without blame) tend to forget that there are people behind these services with families to feed and bills to pay and until someone can find a feasible way to keep these things free, we just have to deal with it.
It's nice to see that despite all of the funding cuts we've had here in Canada, we are still able to contribute a significant piece of technology to the international space station. And incidentally, thanks for noting that it's the Canadarm, not the "Big Arm" as CNN calls it.
The foremost invention of the 20th century will turn out to be the personal computer. Never before have an unprecedented number of people had such an unprecedented access to information. And yes, I'm very well aware of the fact that the internet was developed prior to the PC but the advent of PC's has made the interent what it is today.

Note that the article is saying that IBM wants to migrate Office to Linux. Not "give away for free". We'd still be paying monopolistic prices for it.
