    Just look att Microsoft :-)

    They where behind in creating GUI, Internet and a whole lot of other things - but still prevailed partly because of lower prices. Now Linux has the price edge...

    Actually, yes it is legal to download books and music! In some countries it are only distribution that is illegeal. Downloading is not distribution so it is perfectly legal in some civilized countries.

    In Sweden this has even been admitted by the Minister of Justice. However it has not stopped the Anti-piracy byroue(sp?) to try and muddle the waters byt proclaiming that it's not legal.

    It's their way to try and sway the public opinion to get EUCD (the EU version of DMCA) approved by the politicians.

    Actually, the MD5 hash has been used to find at least one earlier case. They didn't uppdate the MD5 and someone got suspocious when it did not match.

    Very large empires has folded like the old Greeks, the romans and so on - why not Microsoft ?
    It may take some time but it is not unthinkable.
    Not long ago Microsoft was nearly broken in two separate companies - who says that this situation could not happen again ?

    However - if a open source project folds - you still have the source!

    You might want to support the further development or you might just switch to use another oipen source code base.

    But you still have a choice!

    Using a closed source product you are SNAFU when you are dependent on software where you do not have the source and the world changes and no competitor are available - with open source you have the option of hiring someone who can make the required changes to the software.

    The interesting thing is that every time a Micosoft story are shown on Slashdot several people come out and proclaim time and time again that it's all part of huge Slashdot anti-Micosoft conspiracy.

    I wonder why so many people seams so interested in pointing out that non-existant conspiracy instead of the real facts.

    They complain and writes a lot of off-topic posting about this proclaimed great conspiracy. Strangly it makes me come to think of advertising - by repeating someting very many times some people will start to think that what they say might be true - even though it looks more like Micosoft usual FUD tacticts. Like the time thay had a ad-person from a firm they hired switch from Mac to MS software so that she could write a positive review of the experience.

    This whining loooks more like an anti-Slashdot compaign from Microsoft fanatics.

    I think the problem is that you and a lot of other people should know that if Micosoft stopped being a bully and became a more well-behaved company - it would not get so mush bad press on Slashdot and other places.

    Any company that use illegal business practice will have to bear their own self-inflicted burden of badwill.

    In some countries - like #7 Sweden - the freedom of the press is more important than to jail criminals. Journalist do not have to reveal the source of an article under the law.

    It is important that people should be able to talk to a journalist without the fear that they can be jailed because of it.

    The reason it exists cheap broadband in Sweden is that an entrepreneur startad a company called Bredbandsbolaget (The broadband company) and started to connect people with 10Mbit/s broadband.

    Others followed suit...

    Linux the Kernel is not an commercial operating system.

    No company are selling the kernel as far as I know.

    Some companys are however selling GNU based distributions with the Linux kernel - but that's another beast.

    One criteria when evaluating the best tool is the license and the users rights. One important citeria should be the users right to see the source and fix bugs and add new features to the software product so that it can work as intended.

    This criteria means that many - not all, but nearly all - propriatory software products are inferior.

    "at your options" says it all - it means that I can stick with the old version of the GPL as long as I want too. I am not forced to change to the new version!

    Most commersial licenses requires you to accept new changes or never ever use the product again.

    GPL, as always, is protecting my rights as a user!

    The sad part is that many software companies tries to control HOW you use the program, WHO uses it and WHAT they use it for.

    The gargantual licenses used by software companies nowadays are taking ridiculous proportions.

    We are all lucky that RMS once upon a time came up with the GNU GPL to ensure end users rights and that at least some software gives you a lot more freedom that restrictions.

    Cause it will not ready for release before :-)

    The code is posted, but the patch is not. You must be one fucking amazingly competent sysadmin to be able to patch this hole already. And no, shutting off the service is not always an option.

    Now you know why some people prefer open source products. Without the source you are at the mercy of the company that supplied the inadequate product.

    You have noone else to blaim but those that took the decision to use an inferior product.

    The problem is from way before that time (well 7 days which ia a very long time to patch a security bug) - i.e. you should have used that patch.

    Why does everything have to be done on the screen!

    Most servers doen's have an active desktop or even anyone logged into the server.

    Simple put it in a cron job.

    If you want the cron job can also then just check for new updates and send an email to the administrator every time a new patch is available so that it not blindly installs every new patch without human interaction.

    The fact that the biggest maker of cell phone networks is from Sweden(Ericsson) and the biggest cell phone maker is from Finlands (Nokia) are because the Nordic countries (which includes Sweden and Finland) agreed upon the GSM standard...

    GSM was a huge success and the rest are history.

    The standard was a huge success because the Nordic countries had good telephone servies and companyes with high tech know-how in the area. (Ericsson has been in the telecom business nearly as long as AT&T.)

    Instead of competing with different technologies they competed to make the best product supporting the GSM standard.

    (*) Large part of it are ADSL and cable modems with 512kb/s.

    Actally I think that the industry should start writing correct code according to the standards and stop using all those browser supported extensions.

    Very few web pages - Slashdot included - are using correct HTML code. How is a browser going to be able to show a webpage when all web pages uses thier own definition of that a web page is.

    I also would like to point out a something that seams to confuse some people here -

    java != javascript

    They are different languages.
