So you've been to Canada and Cancun? Well, good for you. I started to write up a long answer, but when I came to respond to your argument stating that "Poor people will always be taken advantage of, at home, or abroad."... I see that our views of the world are so far apart that there really is no point.
In short:
- people don't have to bee poor, and there is don't have to put up with being taken advantage off because "that's just the way it is". If you're from the US and not a native indian, your ancestors were immigrants fleeing from opression and poverty and brought their culture with them.
- the corrupted governments are mostly supported by different rich states for different reasosns. Think why US left Saddam in power last time - regional stability, Think overthrown socially aware govmnts in South America / Africa
- Kurds, I know a few thank you very much, and their history, still they've been culturaly opressed in the way you were proposing
- China is a communist country, - great example!
- If I invite poeple to my house I expect them to behave, and they expect me not to rape them.
- Stop clicking the Post Cowardly option...
Pleease travel? Hehe.. I have traveled, extensively, and almost exclusively I've lived with the locals. Well, I haven't been to Australia, yet, but all other continents I have visited. Have you?
And what is a "liberal attitude towards sex"? When I was in Tunisia (muslims oh my god!) some young boys (maybe 11 y.o.)were offering "love" for payment. I guess they had been touched by the western liberal attitude towards sex?
Concerning your third paragraph. Did I say colonialism was the "only" reason? No, I said the "strongest" reason and I stand by it. Don't try to put your words in my mouth, your hands are filty. And of course education is important! Did I say anything else? And about "solid institutions and government" - what planet are you on? New Orleans? Enron? Bush Juniors first "election"? Or maybe the US 2-party system - "100% better than soviets 1-party system!!! Yay!"
The third wold works as the ghetto - keep a large enough part of people poor so that you can use the rest as cheap labour and play them agains eachother when it comes to salary. Don't wanna work for peanuts? Fine, your neighbour will! The same rules are aplied when corporations move factories between poor countries. It's simple and evil.
So by the last paragraph I understand you don't like Brittney. Congrats! The thing is - I was joking, because neither I nor you have the right to command anything of the like. I do not _have_ to speak you language If I don't wanna. You can not forbid me to speak mine. Ever heard of human rights? Probaböy not, since you are implying rules until recentöy used in secular Turkey where the kurd langage didn't legaly "exist". If I don't want to vote - I don't have to, of course then I'll have my self to blame for not affecting my own situation, but still I am not in any way obliged to do any of the above.
Go on and live in your fascist world in your head. The world sways from time to time, now the cold winds are blowing like inte the McCarty fifties. But tides turn, and I push tides...;P
You misinterpreted me paritially but I really see your point. (I will keep my long hair byt I will not act like a "boor"). And I can promise you that 99% of the time I am understanding and try to spread a good vibe, and it does work (see tha part of the ex-xenophopic-ex?). Even if it's freaking frustrating. This time as I said I had work to do and she had me delayed so I didn't have time to be polite. I didn't sneer at her either and since she was even _hesitant_ at apologizing, she was going like "Well, ehh. What can I sy, what was I supposed to... ehh".. weel, I went on to do my job. Forgiving is devin and this day I was only human..
Why _should_ they become british/american/western? should all punks becoma mainstream? should we all listen to Britney Spears and watch reality shows and listen to dr Phil? Are any of us allowed to digrress from the norm? Who will decide by how much? You?
Hahaha. "[T]he west has liberal attitudes towards sex". Are you nuts? Or wait, you still think in the west we all have the same opinions. So since youre posing christians vs muslims - whose cristians views are we talking about, the pope? Get a clue...
Economical benefits of living in the west? Are you implying all imigrants are filthy rich? You couldn't be farther from the truth! People leave their countries mainly because of conflicts and poverty. Most of them live on carapppy jobs, but _live_ which is their main goal.
"[T]he culture that has produced these great standards of living." It has nothing to do with uclture, well paritally, if you consider brutal colonialism a culture. The classical colonialist past and the modern colonialism (with no "real" colonies) are strongest reason for the west thriving. There is always a balance, and although you may wish it, just good moral standards are not enough to produce averything we are consuming - we are getting it cheaply by using cheap sweatshops in other countries.
"[R]ather than picking and choosing which bits [you] like" now I comand you to start listening to Brittney, watch 2 hous of sports per day, preferably NasCar and boxing, eat freedom fires at McDonalds twice a day, go out gaybashing and stop reading books! OTOH, you proabably are allready doing all of that, nevermind.

Nice nazi thread you've started here, it'seems you've brought a few friend nazi moderators with you too. But I see allready some rebutals so I'll try to add some info so that people who might get swayed but your properly phrased stupidity will have something to balance your crap.
So you have bought in to the cultural/religious war theory. Wars are never about any of those - they are always about assets on a high level and fueld by manipulation and ignorance on a low level. To be able to aquire "good" soldiers they have to be ignorant, and being poor and uneducated is a good start. That is why cannon fodder in wars and rioter possies are always composed of poor population. They have nothing to lose but their already worthless lives.
Do you think christians for centuries have killed christians over religion? Have you heard the phrase "Kill them all. God will know his own" before? Do you think a muslim utterd it? What about the conquistadores 500 years ago, the serbs with Milosevic a dacade ago or Ireland today? "Oh, but those are not 'real' christians!" you say? So are there different kinds? Don't you fscking think there are different kinds of muslims? Ever been to a muslim country? (Yes, I've been to two, north and west Africa). Ever actually _met_ one? Gone to his home? I had a swedish girlfriend who was extremely xenophobic before we met, through me she met two muslim families and she told me that she had never seen anyone treat their wifes better that these two guys. All of her nazi friends "treated their cars better than their girlfriends" while talking shit of the muslim women oppressors. Btw, these families were well educate and prompted their sons and _daughters_ to get educated as well, so you can stick your "removing of educational opportunities" argument pretty high up too.
About France, you're so totaly wrong I don't know where to begin. What do you know of france? Except that thats where freedom fries, formerly known as french fries come from? (They're not even french). Do you know why there are som many north africans there? Well, it _might_ have to do with the french colonialism!? Ever heard of the harkis? They did a _lot_ for France, but the french government betrayed them when retiering from Algeria. The french officers had been given orders not let harkis retreat/immigrate to France although they before the Algerian independance had french sitizenship and they had fought against the independence movement. Thanks to some righteous french officers a great deal of them were able to flee to France. But there they were put in camps for _decades_ and treated like illegal imigrants. Early this year the french government finaly gave some recognition of what they did for france. If you have been treated like shit for decades, have low chances fo geting a decent job, the government has given up on you and your neighborhood and have nothing to lose - what do you do? What did the americans do in the independence war? Kill their own christian brothers of course! In the name of freedom!
You are concentrating on the images you see everyday on you brainwash box. Evil dark men all around you trying to kill you, take your belongings and you women. I am one of those, the other day a woman wouldn't let me into a clinique where I was going to do some support on a computer powered eye microscope. A longhaired latino? No fucking way! I told her I could call the people inside to come and get me she still wouldn't believe me. They happend to show up by chance and since they were swedes suddendly it was ok. She _almost_ apologised, but i had work to do so I left her there. Wtf can I do? I hope she learens from that experience, but chances are slim to none. Think of how big the muslim world is. Think of how big the christian world is. Media chooses to concentrate on the bad news and that is all you'll see. Or maybe you just have an agenda you want to push here? Go back to play Castle Wolfenstein and build WWII Luftwaffe models, I don't have more time for this..
Have you guys completely forgotten about Corel doing this in the past? Hmm... Come to think of it, slashdot.org wasn't even around back then...:?
Here's someone who kept the old Corel Java Office. I remember being cautiously exited about this, but it turned out the computers of that time and the bandwith generaly available were a killer for this app (pun intended)...
The "other=/dev/hda" should read "other=/dev/hda1" Since he mentions that it's on the first partition on the first disk..
I hope there are not abunch of newbies scratching their heads now over what they've done wrong..:).. And there should be a "table=/dev/hda" at the end of the "other" definition too,..
Not only does Knoppix support reading from NTFS partitions, you can also write to them. Think of it like this, Knoppix can do all the nifty stuff Linux can, and since Linux can read/write NTFS so can Knoppix. (It can read [and write] a whole bunch of other FSs too..:) )
Linux has been able to read NTFS partitions for a long time, there has been experimental NTFS writing, which has been largely considered harmfull and AFAIK a rewrite is on its way. In the mean time something very cool is included in Knoppix: Captive NTFS. This is a technique where the original ntfs.sys driver from windows is borrowed, either from your windows partition or by downloading a service pack from windowsupdate.microsoft.com and pulling the drivers from there. I have used it and it has worked fine, EXCEPT on realy large files. Like avi files of 600Mb+. The thing is, even those failed operations (the computer slowed to a crawl) didn't damage my NTFS filesystems.
I haven't DL:ed the last versions of Knoppix but as late as in 3.7 Captive NTFS was included. It's higly improbable that is has been excluded. Anyway, even if it has been removed you can still read your NTFS partition.
I succeded in transfering the filesystem to the USB drive from windows but my comp seems to be unwilling to boot from the USB device. Try what I did and maybe your comp will react better.
This is what I did...
1 Get the dd utility from here. Unzip it and put it into your c:\winnt directory (unless you want to mess with env. variables [PATH]).
2. Get the boot.img.gz image from here. For some unexplainable reason Windows unpacked it for me to its real size (ca 123 Mb). Maybe because I have winrar installed? Maybe not. Winrar should be able to unpack it anyway.
3. Get the bootbf2_4-xfs_iso.zip and read this to be able to unpack it. I like this ISO because it the kernel has XFS support. Choose any other you prefer.
4. Start a cmd.exe and use "dd --list" to see your devices so that dd can use them. (dd is used to copy raw data). My usb device was I: and in the listin I could read:
\\.\Volume{45e7b0b0-e981-11d8-be69-00a0c9ca4794}\
Mounted on i:\
5. After finding your USB device in the list dd the boot.img to the device:
6. If that worked copy the unpacked bootbf2.4-xfs.iso file to your USBs root directory.
7. Reboot the comp and enter the BIOS setup. Set it to boot from your USB (or USB-ZIP) device.
The filesystem on my friends USB drive is fine and I can mount it from windows and Linux. The filesystem si 128Mb big and the device is 256 so it seemd to have worked fine (since the iso was supposed to have a 128Mb fs). I have one comp that is supposed to be bootable from USB but the USB device (mp3-player) itself seems to not react untill the OS is up. maybe that's why it won't boot? I hope. Hope you have better luck!..:)
I don't have a 128MB usb drive... But this is what I would try..
The.gz file seems to have an bootable filesystem image. Extract it using wizip, winrar or gzip/gunzip. Get the rawrite2 utility and use it to put it on the USB drive using the USB drives letter. Download the "Debian netinst CD image" (as stated on the page you linked to) and copy it to the now correctly formated USB drive........ Profit!?...:)... Please post success/failiure reports..:D
Disclaimer: these are just suggestions and I haven't tried it mywelf! If you damage your hardware.... then you must have done something pretty wild..
Cheers...
Re:Can't BSD people be polite in subject lines?

SMP Now In OpenBSD HEAD

Was I impolite? Sorry, I even re-edited my first subjet that includede "OMFG" & "FFS".. j/k..;)
For me OpenBSD has been a OS where I've been willing to give up performance for security. This is no major problem considering that todays (and even yesterdays) computers are extremely efficient if you don't shove a lot of fancy graphics down their throat. My fw at home was 486sx25 and got substituted by a P100 only because the P100 was far more silent. (oh, and it runs FreeSCO)
Speaking of performance, I did get very very happy with 2.9 wich boasted a 60x filesystem I/O boost..:)..
Anyway, I have no experience of huge enviroments. I've worked at smaller schools with a maximum of around 250 desktops/servers. I used to work at a school around 2000/2001 with some 150 desktops and all of them with real IPs (no fw). Most of them had servers running since it was a webdeveloper/designer school. Some computers were Macs but most run NT4. Needless to say they got haxxored more and more. I got fed up with it and started running RedHat 6.2 at my desktop (as I did at home) but even here I got fed up with checking for patches and checking logs for intrusions so I went for OpenBSD at the desktop and we started moving all exept the.asp pages to a second OpenBSD 2.8 computer. Never had any problems with either of these comps exept an ftp patch and an ssh patch IIRC. Our fileserver was a Samba wielding Slackware Linux-box and we also set up a fw, don't remember if it was Linux or OpenBSD though.
As you see I am an not "BSD people" but rather an OS agnostic (aka OS whore) and believe that all OSes have a good place in the matrix. OpenBSD is my choice for "deploy and (almost) forget". Security issuses come so seldom that they get posted on/. which I check daily..;)
BTW.. The other day I celebrated the 777 days uptime (that's 2+ years) of a OpenBSD 3.0 machine..:')
OpenBSD is NOT premirely a webserever. It can and is used as one (I do it), but its main use is as a firewall. It even got voted as "best application for firewalling" by the MS crowd..:)
I've been aware of OpenBSDs lack of SMP since 2000 when I installed it on a double PentiumPro 180 Mhz. I Thought it was weird it didn't have SMP since Linux and FreeBSD had it but after some reading I accepted the desision.
I guess the OpenBSD guys went for SMP considering the double core desktop processors gaining more ground. Am I correct?
Hey, Homer's the typical American, fat, loud, stupid and lazy! He does ridiculously stupid things every week, and by next week everything's back to normal, so he never faces the consequences of his actions!
Although I watch a lot of Anime and have been doing so for many years (my first one being Space Firebird 2772 back in 1980) I first came to know of Lupin III through this pretty cool and unusal game called Punch the Monkey. It's a non-violent game based on your skill to press the various PS buttons to the rythm of remixes of the original Lupin III music and animated flicks. For even more Lupin III games check this out.
An american is telling me about an election being a farce..:).. _You_ are the one who has a president who got ellected by getting fewer votes than the other candidate!.. And where are your aruments about the ellection being a farce? A good guess is you just pulled that statment out of your behind.
An american wouldn't flee huis home? Please! What you call America (the USA) was _founded_ by people who (for many different reasosn) fled their homes. Stop talking crap.
And about me being a coward, It's kinda hard to "stay home and fix it" whan you are 2 y.o. you sorry dumbass.
If you don't come up with better arguments next time I will not even bother answering...
Dude, I didn't say the US is going to "take the oil". But this conflict is very much about oil, and also about covering for the inability to find and eliminate Usama & Co. It's an extention to the "war on terrorism" wher you now have a nonellusive target. This guy has nowhere to go and if he gets kicked Bush can claim thata a "serious strike" has been dealt to terrorism, which is absolute BS - Usama & sympathizers are still around. Anyway, about the oil. The oil is a very important issue for the US. Think car inidustry, think billions of $ in taxes, think of the industries around refineries and so on. Stability in Oil countries is what the US govt is looking for, they don't give a rats ass about democracy, but it's a good coverup. Iraq is actually much more democratic (relatively speaking( than Saudi Arabia which has a monark with absolute power. Still the US doesn't bother Saudi Arabia, they're even "allies". It's all about money - it always is. Actually it's all about sex, but _that_ is another discussion again..;)
I can think of no other nation, in history, that has done so much to foster freedom.
Aggghh.... Dude, I'm from Chile but I live in Sweden, _because_ of the intervention of the US in other countries bussiness. In 1973 a socialist government was chosen democratically in Chili, with help from the big country up north the government was overthrown and a fascist regime was put to power. Pinochet (the dictator) tortured, killed and made people dissapear. He even had dogs trained to rape women as a means of torture. SO DON'T GIVE ME THE " has done so much to foster freedom"...;(.. Even there it was about money. The govt had decided that the Chilean copper belonged to the people and decided to retake the mines which accidentaly were sold to among others american companies some 100 years ago for a ludicrous price. Some dude made some money back then on the entire countys cost. That behaviour of stability before democracy(freedom) has been repeated all the time. yes the US helped (western )Europe to get on it's feet, but at the same time got a good grip on it too. Wouldn't you feed and take care of a injured individual who will make a potential good guard/ally/slave/whatever? It was simply an investment.
All I'm asking is for people to look at what the US has done.
I do look at that.. And all is no good.. It's strange.. I've met a good deal of Americans, and they have all been good people.. Warm heart and all.. But your gvmnt sucks badly.. strange.. does not compute..:)
Would you rather the US be a superpower or a nation like Iraq?
Choosing between being shot in the head or the heart is not much of a choice..:)
Sorry mr whoopass..:).. The insult was innecessary, but I'm just human and get pissed when (imo) people let themseves be misled. You made a good post till you came to the "after the Chinese embassy was accidentally bombed". It was not bombed by accident, it was intentional because it was used among other things as a radiostation by the serbs. But hey, that's another discussion.
the quote that you pasted is a standard polititian answer. Later inte the article (or was it earlyer) there is a similar answer to another question. That's standard behaviour and tells you there's someone told them what to say and not to deviate from it.
Does the US control Germany's coal fields? North Sea oil? Do you actually think that the US is going to put up a flag and open a gas station selling Iraqi oil, taking all the money for the US treasury? Naturally major oil companies will be involved. There are already major oil companies in Iraq. They are French. Ever wonder why the French are so opposed to the war?
The US doesn't control german or french assets _litteraly_. But they (actualy the corporations backed by the government) have a lot to say in the global market. They put a lot of pressure on other governments and companies wich practicaly _is_ to control them. I guess it's ok if it would be a two-way thing, but it's not. Do you remeber the steelindustry "support" given by Bush in a matter that kills what the US som mutch fights for - free trade. That's just one example of how much real influence the US (gov and corporations) has. So they don't have to 0wn anything or "put up a flag and start bussiness". In conclusion, look for comanies, not governmental organs practicing pressure/power. it's not that evident at first, but you will start seeing the pattern.
And I really don't believe Saddam has any plan to protect anyone elses but his own skin (and maybe his closest relatives). I'm not a Saddam supporter! He is a warmonger as good as they come, but so is his cousin the empty warhead G Dubya Bush.
I'm too tired and busy to continue this discussione but if you insist..;)
There are far to many bits of that article to quote so I really hope you read it through. It is also said (although not mentioned in the article) that it's also already decided which foreign companies are going to control the oil "of the iraqui people". Dig the net, find out.
By the way, did you hear about the US plan of protecting hospitals and schools and historical artifacts in Iraq? Me neither!
Gee.. Just what we need - more patents.. And to blatantly claim that "recyclebins" have only been available on MS OSes.. IIRC they had to rename it to RecycleBin because of the similarities to the Macs trash... tsk tsk tsk...
In short:
- people don't have to bee poor, and there is don't have to put up with being taken advantage off because "that's just the way it is". If you're from the US and not a native indian, your ancestors were immigrants fleeing from opression and poverty and brought their culture with them.

I haven't DL:ed the last versions of Knoppix but as late as in 3.7 Captive NTFS was included. It's higly improbable that is has been excluded. Anyway, even if it has been removed you can still read your NTFS partition.

I didn't get errors either.. But my comps are too old for this fancy-shmancy USB stuff I guess.. ;) .. Go to bed? Oh you're in europe too.. :)
I succeded in transfering the filesystem to the USB drive from windows but my comp seems to be unwilling to boot from the USB device. Try what I did and maybe your comp will react better.
:)
Mounted on i:\
5. After finding your USB device in the list dd the boot.img to the device:
dd boot.img.gz \\.\Volume{45e7b0b0-e981-11d8-be69-00a0c9ca4794}\
I hope. Hope you have better luck!..
Cheers...
Hmm... Pitty... I've borrowed a friends 256Mb mp3-player and will try to make this work. I'll post results here. :)
I don't have a 128MB usb drive... But this is what I would try..
.gz file seems to have an bootable filesystem image. Extract it using wizip, winrar or gzip/gunzip. Get the rawrite2 utility and use it to put it on the USB drive using the USB drives letter. Download the "Debian netinst CD image" (as stated on the page you linked to) and copy it to the now correctly formated USB drive........ Profit!?... :) ... Please post success/failiure reports.. :D

Disclaimer: these are just suggestions and I haven't tried it mywelf! If you damage your hardware.... then you must have done something pretty wild..

Speaking of performance, I did get very very happy with 2.9 wich boasted a 60x filesystem I/O boost.. :) ..
I got fed up with it and started running RedHat 6.2 at my desktop (as I did at home) but even here I got fed up with checking for patches and checking logs for intrusions so I went for OpenBSD at the desktop and we started moving all exept the .asp pages to a second OpenBSD 2.8 computer.
Security issuses come so seldom that they get posted on /. which I check daily.. ;)
BTW.. The other day I celebrated the 777 days uptime (that's 2+ years) of a OpenBSD 3.0 machine.. :')

Although I watch a lot of Anime and have been doing so for many years (my first one being Space Firebird 2772 back in 1980) I first came to know of Lupin III through this pretty cool and unusal game called Punch the Monkey. It's a non-violent game based on your skill to press the various PS buttons to the rythm of remixes of the original Lupin III music and animated flicks. For even more Lupin III games check this out.

If you don't come up with better arguments next time I will not even bother answering...

the quote that you pasted is a standard polititian answer. Later inte the article (or was it earlyer) there is a similar answer to another question. That's standard behaviour and tells you there's someone told them what to say and not to deviate from it.
I'm too tired and busy to continue this discussione but if you insist.. ;)
Cheers!
Since you seem to be a "it's online - it has to be true" guy here is a link: USA: US Begins Secret Talks to Secure Iraq's Oilfields
Me neither!
