Have you been to the theaters in Holland Michigan?? I lived there for two years when I taught at Malda's alma-mater. He would be better off watching a low resolution DIVX version...
I don't see any reason why the earth part of the system should be more than stipes of whatever color reflective paint on the ground. It's easy and cheap, and it won't ever need upgrading. Then car computer guides itself with the paint lines, but uses GPS to ditermine it's location and to make decisions about turning and stuff.
Sounds like someone who has never lived in an area of the country where stuff on the ground gets covered up by snow, gravel, spills from who knows what. Maintinance on this would be a pain as well. It is already hard enough maintaining the lines that are already on the road...
If, as a previous poster mentioned, the average home computer is 2,100 MTOPS, it takes about 6.5 doublings of computer power to reach 195,000 MTOPS. If Moores law holds and we double every 1.5 years, this adds almost 10 years until the average desktop reaches this limit. That is certainly more than just a couple of years. If a mainstream small-busines server is twice the power of an average home computer, this still gives over 8 years...
Now, even given those numbers, I still think the limitations are just plain dumb.
This is absolutely false. Linear programming which is solving systems like max sum(a_i*x_i) subject to the constraint Ax > b where A is a matrix and x and b are vectors is solvable in polynomial time. There are many algorithms for solving these problems which are polynomial although the most common technique is NP-complete (but usually solves quickly)
"...you could roll your own! Probably for lots less than $1000".
Not quite. Pricewatch has 80gb drives going for $164. You would need three of these which comes to about $500. Add in a Duron 850 (don't want to drop frames) and a mb for $100, 128mb, ram, and other minutia for $100. Now you are up to $950 when one adds in the Hauppage card. This is also just a straight PC. You don't have an IR remote or any other features that I am sure their system will come with. On the other hand, it would be quite cool to roll it yourself!
I have made a port using Napier bones . Perhaps you can build off of my work. I also don't have ethernet running but perhaps we can work together on that!
"Only you, your family, and your closest friends know your birthday"
Even more so, who else knows your birthday: Stalkers, your ex, everyone at work,... In many cases, having this information public could be very dangerous...
"but telling MS that their own desktop is off limits is like telling McDonalds to sell their Big Macs and McNuggets... somewhere other than at a McDonalds"
Not at all. What this is like is McDonalds trying to tell me that if I decide to resell their product that I must keep it exactly as they sold it to me. Also, a point that is missed here is that MS has a monopoly. As a monopoly, they must play by different rules than other companies like McDonalds who does not have a monopoly.
With 40k users, $5/user and only 1/4 helping out, that would still yield 50k. Perhaps that would help cover the legal costs. (note: I don't use any instant messanger and would probably not support!:-) )
A new anti-porn bill is working its way through congress...

Great review. Now you've just got to work on not verbing your nouns
"verbing"... Hmmm.
I guess someone had to say it
What happened to information wants to be free??? :-) Hope this works out for you guys.
Slashdotted...
So, now we slashdot the earth????

A just as scientific and much more amusing rating can be found at Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter
Don't by em.
Better solution: Buy them and return them.

Umm.
I think the question should be:
emacs or vi?
From the status page , it says only 6% of all linux syscalls are implemented...
The latest TiVos do have two tuners and can also record two shows at once, just like UltimateTV
I guess this now means that there are three times as many people on /. that will flame one for releasing a derived product.

Hmmm. This is one time I won't mind if there is not a Linux version of the plug in...

And survived... That should be at least a small amount of evidence it is not dangerous! :-)
Sure boss,I am just improving my mind and I have a web page that shows it!
