yeah, and I might get that title track out of my head. It's not that it was any good but for some reason it always gets stuck in my head: "It's been a long road..."
As a consultant myself I only realized that I am one a few months ago. I was self employed for 6 years now working for different customers on a variety of projects. I always thought I was a web guy, a sysad, a tech-writer or even a tech-teacher. But it turned out that I am just that: an IT consultant.
Thanks heavens that it turned out I am pretty good at it.;-)
This is probably the best read on this subject I had in a long time. If you are planning to do this kind of job and follow his rules you really might have success and a lot of fun. If your idea of fun is work a LOT and have tight schedules and fix tricky stuff in no time that is. The upside: You are doing lots of interesting stuff, meet many cool people, get to see a lot of different companies wich might just hire you if beeing self employed gets sour and last not least you might earn a living.
But don't call my customers or you might be in trouble...;-)
Offtopic but hey: The red button will eternally be linked in my brain to the one in the pool of ManiacMansion that reads "Do not push" and wich everyone i know pushed anyways.,-)
Yeah, I know what you're saying. Actually we are having this discussion over here right now. And if it wasn't for the excellent performance of OpenOffice and Firefox (and Thunderbird on some clients) they wouldn't even consider to move our shops to Linux. All they need over there is a Webbrowser and an E-Mail client (a luxury more than a requirement) anyway. Let's just hope that it plays out like this:
1. The delay of longhorn causes many to use a more secure browser wich causes them to try other free software. 2. Longhorn arrives and all is well. 3. Microsoft switches to panicmode as OfficeLH doesn't take off immediately and breaks compatibility for some OS tools. (Might be formatwise not to make the judges nervous) 4. People want to keep their beloved free apps and think that Windows is only cool because it's free with their PC anyway and they start to fiddle with one of the cheaper off-the-shelf Linuxboxes that some stores (Dell?) start to offer. And suddenly we are all part of a mainstream movement.;-)
I mean let's bring all the greatest OS-programs to the Windows platform. Just what Microsoft needs to strengthen it's monopoly: even more great applications on Windows. Of course many people will get in touch with Firefox and now Evo but they won't make the switch to a free platform. But still, I'd love to get my desktop users off of Outlook and this might be a real alternative for them.
I am just not sure if OpenSource should battle Microsoft on their own ground. They can change the rules anytime they like. And they have done so before...
I am kinda disappointed. If they HAVE to fake these pictures they could at least use a different photostudio. This looks exactly the same as the ones from their Mars shooting;-)
It's "live". I think the athmosphere adds to the experience. I have enough of those highly brushed up BBC like documentaries. These people are actually working there and you get a glimpse over their shoulders.
I know what you mean but still, I like the feeling of beeing there. If you want the hifi version wait for tomorrows 20sec. CNN coverage.
Wow, so much for a fragmented installbase. I wasn't aware that Windows comes in so many flavours these days. And they don't list NT4 or all the DOS based Windowses.
I must say that releasing a Spyware tool looks to me as they are giving up on their current OS since they tried to fix it time and again with no luck. A proper design would not let Spyware in at all.
They throw this Spyware Software out the door and pray that Longhorn will make it all better. I bet it will. For sure. This time...
If it looks good, yes.

Agreed.

It's all about timing, really...
Or Microsoft changes Exchange in "Longhorn exchange" to kick all the other clients out.

That's out.rag.icio.us!
I just learned today what eclipse is. A co-worker introduced it as if it was the best thing since sliced bread. Any opinions from the slashdot crowd?
Obvious, isn't it? But a hundred man is not that bad after all. Given that I am in charge of a cat and it won't follow my orders...
Yeah, totally. THAT was what it reminded me of. ;-)
Actually this sounds like an episode trom STNG:
"The celery analogy"
I think they were after a pun for the ancient roman general: The Centurion
Centrino - Turion
This makes more sense to me than the celery ananlogy.
This would make a great name for a band.
Next thing you tell me it spies on your data. This is getting ridiculous.
Sorry, are you for real?

I remember:
"640K ought to be enough for anybody."
(okok, just to ruin this I KNOW that the quote was taken out of context and it became an urban legend, yadayadayada...)
