This is very good news. This means that _everything_, including the kernel will run faster with Linux. This is something that every hardware manufacturer on the planet should figure out: Make a freely available ass kicking compiler for your hardware, people will use it to make ass kicking software for your platform, and people will buy your hardware. I've always bought AMD or Cyrix, but my next chip is going to be Intel.
Motorola, IBM, Compaq, etc. have yet to figure this out.
Yes, you're right, it would make a great system. It seems that you don't get it though. Many of us would love to have more processing power and could make good use of it. Just because luddites such as yourself have nothing better to do than play Quake with your hardware, is no reason to assume others are the same.
"Fully supported versions of the Linux 5.0 operating system will be provided by fee-based Linux distributors and providers like Red Hat Software Inc. and Caldera. These companies will provide disk or CD versions of Linux 5.0 , as well as installation assistance, documentation and 24x7 technical support. Support and consulting companies such as Linuxcare Inc. provide a full range of Linux-based support and customization services. "
Hey where can I get Linux version 5.0? I only have 2.2!
Idiots. They should hire people who know something to write their press releases.

Yup. Remember, this is news for nerds. We nerds work in jobs where we run calculation intensive programs for which multiprocessing is quite applicable. Our simulation and analysis programs regularly run on several computers at once.
All this changing of permissions is stupid. What if I want to run multiple programs using the sound, like I use multiple programs displaying on my video screen?
What if every program that printed something had to write directly to the printer rather than sending it to lpd? We'd call that DOS.
Why do no programs in Linux use a standard sound server? It's a pain in the butt that I have to set all my sound devices to user write/readable or run things as superuser just to use sound. It also makes programming a pain in the ass.
datazone is completely right. All you engineers and computer nerds have done too good a job. Making a robotic mission will give much much more bang for the buck than trying to life support humans and get them back to Earth.
Speaking of such things, I had to chuckle when I watched "Deep Impact." For the time and money they spent on that manned space ship, they could have sent up enough nukes to vaporize a small state.
These Compaq computers come with a 3 year ON-SITE warranty. This means that Compaq's engineers will fly out to you and hold your hand if you get edgy about hooking up your new monitor. You or I wouldn't pay for this, but those more ignorant will. OEM Alphas and clones are much cleaper.
OSS is a very good investment, especially by a company that also makes hardware on which it runs. This is why Intel has invested in RedHat. Linux makes their machines run fast, allows people to customize their machines, and it allows people to spend more on hardware and less on software.
I went to Quicken/Intuit on the off chance that they might have some such software for Linux. Silly me. But I did find their Web Turbo Tax site, which sounded cool. One could do one's taxes over the web, if you had a java enabled browser. I thought, "This is the future, right? Java platform independent, thin client, etc., etc." So I went to the site and tried it and got the following:
WebTurboTax requires the Macintosh, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 operating system and one of the following browsers:
For Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01
Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.x
For Macintosh:
Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.x
Please install one of these browsers and try again.
Your current browser is: Browser: Netscape Version: 4.08 [en] (X11; I; OSF1 V4.0 alpha) OS : OSF1V3
Where can I get Law-help software for Linux? It seems like one could write something like this in a simple HTML or javascript, making it platform independent.
And I'm not talking about fvwm2 here. That's too big and bloated. The original fvwm is the best. It's small, it's fast and sleek, AND it has a seemless virtual desktop. Everything a window manager should be.
Great. Now where can I find an ATX form factor motherboard for PPC. And don't post any "I think you can find one here" or "Oh, it's easy to find one" crap! If you see one on the net, post it's URL!
The federal funding of Free Software may actually save tax payers money if goverment institutions start using it. Federal and local governments pour vast amounts of $$ into software every year. Having a firm foundation of free software would save us all money in the future.
The federal government buys so much software it could break Microsoft's monopoly in an instant if President Clinton forbade any government money being spent on Microsoft products. This is well within his power and would be much cheaper than spending years in court.
One can download optimized distributions. This saves one a lot of hassle.
The compiler to which they are referring IS gcc, but optimized for Intel processors.

Ditto
A motherboard with sockets for many of these chips would make a cool desktop beowolf system.

What if every program that printed something had to write directly to the printer rather than sending it to lpd? We'd call that DOS.
That's my whole point. That's why we should have a semi-standardized sound server, like we have standardized video server (X11).
Why do no programs in Linux use a standard sound server? It's a pain in the butt that I have to set all my sound devices to user write/readable or run things as superuser just to use sound. It also makes programming a pain in the ass.
$$ is what they understand.

mpeg2encode does a great job. I use it with tvset and xvidcap and my $60 video capture card to put videos of my son on the net.

RedHat writes free software. And they think that they're making millions! Somebody tell them they're not!

I read the court brief. It's very good.
Watch out people, or corporations will own everything.
You may want to terminate the unused outputs with 75 ohm resistors.
Does anyone know of anyone who makes EV6 motherboards other than DEC? I'd love a cheap K7, but if the motherboard is going to drain me, forget it!
