  1. Python? on What Programming Languages Should You Learn Next? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm surprised there was no mention of Python. I think Python is a good language to know. It seems to be used a number of places and forces people to write easily readable (and therefore maintainable) code. And I thought it was pretty easy to learn, especially if you have OOP experience.

but you never see mention of it in the "real world," and this article is part of that trend. Why?

I think it depends on where you look in the "real world". I've seen Opera mentioned a lot, just not always when it comes to the desktop. While I use Firefox on my desktop and laptop, I use Opera on my PDA, cell phone, and Wii. Last I checked, IE and Mozilla/Firefox weren't available for any of these devices (at least, with respect to the devices I own).

Also, this article is focusing on the discussion between 2 specific people - one works on Mozilla, one works on IE. If an Opera developer were to become involved, Opera would be part of the discussion.

However, if you take GPL source and modify it, you HAVE to release your changes/additions under the GPL. You can't release your changes under a different license.

The whole issue at hand is re-licensing. You can't take BSD code, change/add to it, strip the BSD license, and release it under the GPL (or the other way around). You can't remove the original license from the parts of code that aren't yours. Period. No matter what the original license was.

If you click it, it takes you to the download page, where it then proceeds to thank you for installing Silverlight. Basically, Flashblock blocks the content and there's no way to view it. You have to turn Flashblock off completely in order to view any Silverlight content.

I see your point, but I don't know if you can compare the PS3 to the Wii. I own a Wii and it's hands-down one of my favorite systems ever, but I don't think the PS3 and Wii are aimed at the same types of people. With that steep PS3 price tag, you get a game system that is backwards compatible with almost all previous Sony titles (I know there are some issues, but for the most part you can play a very good majority of PS1 and PS2 titles on a PS3), DVD and Blu-Ray playback, HDTV capability, etc. The Wii is backwards compatible with one Nintendo system, the GameCube (you can download older games via the Virtual Console, but still have to pay for them even if you already own the carts), has no special disc player (as it stands right now, I can't even watch DVDs on it), no HDTV capability, etc. The Wii is a great gaming system, but I think Sony is wanting the PS3 to be more than just a gaming system. However, I paid just over $300 for the Wii, a game, and extra controller. I paid less and got few features. But I also wasn't looking for a lot of those features the PS3 offers.

I think the comparison you made between the XBox360 and PS3 stands as a valid point though.

For sure. I mean, look at the Apache projects. The Apache license doesn't require modifications to be released (similar to the BSDL), and look how badly it's doing in competing against proprietary software. Not that they care about that sort of thing... /sarcasm

Perhaps you should enlighten the people over at the Free-, Net-, and OpenBSD projects. You can save them tons of time and effort by letting them know that it's nearly impossible for them to compete with proprietary software, because I'm pretty sure they are unaware of these "facts".

I'm a long-time Slack user. One of the reasons I love Slack and use it everywhere I can is because of it's versitility. I can have a super stable server and a super stable desktop with the same version of the same OS. As it stands, Slack is quick to install, lean, stable, and it just works. Patrick's whole philosophy is Keep It Simple Stupid. Moving in the direction of enterprise-class servers would not be KISS. Also, the people behind Slack consist of Patrick and... well, pretty much just Patrick. How would one person maintain a distro aimed at the enterprise market? I like the fact that one person is behind the distro. Patrick makes the decisions, and that's it. There's no need to fear a split with the maintainers or delays in releases due to arguments about what should or shouldn't be included. I fully agree that Slackware makes a great server OS, but I would be really sad if Patrick re-focused Slack's direction and made it a pure server OS aimed at the enterprise market.
